However, he'll serve as an emergency option on Seattle's practice squad in case something happens to Geno Smith or Drew Lock.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Mannion will serve as the team's starting quarterback Sunday against the Packers, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Mannion's appointment to the starting role was expected after Kirk Cousins was ruled out for Week 17 after testing positive for the coronavirus Friday and subsequently landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Though Mannion was on the same list for six days before being activated earlier Friday, Zimmer told Graff there "really wasn't" any consideration to handing the start to third-string rookie Kellen Mond, the only Minnesota signal-caller who was able to practice all week. While the lack of three full practices with the first-team offense leading up to Sunday's game in Green Bay is less than ideal, Mannion is at least fully familiar with Minnesota's playbook after spending parts of the past three seasons in the organization. He's only seen spot duty behind Cousins during his time in Minnesota, with Mannion's sole start as a member of the Vikings coming while the team was resting several key contributors in Week 17 of the 2019 season. He struggled mightily in a loss to the Bears in that game, completing 12 of 21 attempts for 126 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Coach Mike Zimmer hasn't confirmed how he plans to proceed with resting his players in Week 17, but all reports thus far have suggested that several key regulars -- including Kirk Cousins -- won't play much, if at all. Cousins is active against Chicago, but Cronin suggests that even if the veteran signal-caller gets the first snap, he'll merely just be preserving his consecutive start streak before exiting the contest soon thereafter. Mannion, who has appeared in only two games and has played five snaps in total, will thus be in store for his most extended action of the campaign. The setup isn't favorable, however, as the Vikings' top two running backs (Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison) are out with injuries, while starting offensive tackles Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill are healthy inactives. Mannion completed 18 of 25 passes for 147 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in Saturday's 28-24 preseason victory over the Cowboys. He also gained a yard on two rushes.
The 2015 third-round pick received some extended playing time after 2016 No.1 overall pick Jared Goff took an early powder due to a sore shoulder. Mannion made the most of his opportunity, leading the Rams to a rousing comeback from what had been a 21-0 deficit at one point in the first half. He connected with running back Chase Reynolds for the first of his three scores in the third quarter, before coming back with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to Nelson Spruce and Aaron Green. Although he appears destined for a No. 3 role to start the season given the fact that Case Keenum is likely to start while Goff waits in the wings, Mannion can certainly give the Rams' coaching staff something to think about with continued preseason showings the caliber of Saturday's effort.
