Top Scott Mayfield News

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Nets shortie in OT loss

Mayfield scored a shorthanded goal and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 7-6 overtime loss to Nashville.

Mayfield joined the rush while shorthanded and put the Isles ahead 6-4 late in the third period, but that lead was short-lived, as Nashville stormed back and forced overtime. The goal was Mayfield's first point since Jan. 2, though he hasn't logged an assist since Dec. 21. The right-shot defenseman doesn't provide enough value in non-scoring areas to warrant consideration in the fantasy realm -- his plus-16 rating is arguably his best attribute, which leaves him best suited for the waiver wire.

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Struggling for playing time

Mayfield has played in just eight of 16 games since he returned from a lower-body injury Feb. 23.

Mayfield has no points in that span, adding eight blocked shots, seven hits, five shots on net and a minus-1 rating. The Islanders have nine healthy defensemen on the roster, five of them being right-handed shots, including Mayfield. He can play on either side, but it's clear that he is not viewed as one of the team's six best blueliners at this time, and he doesn't have the same scoring appeal as Adam Boqvist to draw in as a seventh defenseman on occasion. Mayfield is at seven points, 45 shots on net, 78 hits, 95 blocked shots and a plus-13 rating over 58 outings this season.

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Looking to play against Stars

Mayfield (lower body) told reporters he is hoping to be available for Sunday's matchup with Dallas, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.

Mayfield appears to have taken advantage of the time off during the 4 Nations Face-Off to get back to 100 percent when the Isles return to action Sunday. In order to suit up versus the Stars, the veteran blueliner will need to be activated off injured reserve and could step into the lineup for Dennis Cholowski or Adam Boqvist.

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Placed on injured reserve

Mayfield (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, per the NHL media site.

The Islanders announced Thursday that Mayfield wouldn't travel for the team's upcoming road trip, so it isn't very surprising to see him land on injured reserve ahead of the league's break for the 4 Nations Face-Off. The 32-year-old will have several weeks to recover before the Islanders take on the Stars on Feb. 23.

Mayfield posted an assist, two blocked shots and a plus-5 rating in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Maple Leafs.

Mayfield ended a 12-game point drought with the helper. The plus-5 rating was a season high, and it showcases why he's been able to maintain his place in the lineup over Dennis Cholowski. Mayfield is firmly in a third-pairing role with six points over 33 contests this season, but he's added decent non-scoring production with a plus-14 rating, 57 hits, 63 blocked shots and 21 PIM.

He's up to three points, 13 shots on net, 30 hits, 26 blocked shots, 15 PIM and a plus-7 rating through 17 contests and should see top-four minutes at least until Alexander Romanov (upper body) returns.

Mayfield is up to two assists, nine shots on net, 11 PIM, a plus-5 rating, 23 hits and 25 blocked shots through 14 appearances.
