Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Loses in first start in two weeks
Varlamov made 33 saves in a 2-0 loss to Buffalo on Saturday.
Varlamov allowed just one goal by Kyle Okposo, who was gifted the puck in tight when a shot from the right point deflected off Anders Lee and onto his stick. The netminder had no time to react and Okposo put it in off the near post. It was Varlamov's first start in two weeks -- it's hard to get ice time behind Ilya Sorokin, one of the NHL's best at his craft.

Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Guarding cage Saturday
Varlamov will guard the road goal Saturday against Buffalo.
Varlamov, who last played March 11 in a 5-1 loss to Washington, has a record of 11-8-2 this season with a 2.79 GAA and a .910 save percentage. He will get the second half of the Islanders' back-to-back after Ilya Sorokin played in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to Columbus. The Sabres rank third in the league this campaign with 3.59 goals per game.

Mayfield posted an assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
This was the third straight game with a helper for Mayfield, with the physical defenseman reaching 20 points for the first time in his career. He's also tacked on 99 hits and 148 blocked shots, but that's not nearly as surprising as Mayfield taking such a drastic leap forward offensively. An increase in ice time -- 20:56 on average -- and a greater volume of shots (103) factor into Mayfield's surge.

Islanders' Adam Pelech: Gets help on helper
Pelech was credited with an assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
Upon finding an open lane, Pelech fired the puck at the net and teammate Kyle Palmieri squared up at the doorstep for the deflected goal. It wasn't the prettiest way to get his team on the scoreboard, but between the helper, three blocked shots and four shots on goal, Pelech ended up with a fairly strong fantasy performance. The top-pairing defenseman has five goals, 14 assists and a plus-15 rating through 52 games.

Islanders' Bo Horvat: Earns power-play helper
Horvat recorded a power-play assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
The former Canucks captain averaged 3.2 points per 60 minutes through 49 games with Vancouver prior to his trade to the Islanders, which was far and away the best stretch of his career. However, the change of scenery has been rather challenging for Horvat. He has five goals and the same number of assists through 21 games with the Isles. which is a far cry from the pace that he'd been on previously. Horvat has a career-worst shooting percentage (8.1) with his new team, and the absence of Mathew Barzal (lower body) makes that top line less of a threat.

Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Two-point effort against Jackets
Palmieri scored a goal and added an assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to Columbus.
He set up Brock Nelson in the second period before finding the back of the net himself in the third. Palmieri has caught fire over the last week-plus, racking up three goals and seven points in the last four games, but on the season the 32-year-old had a less impressive 13 goals and 28 points through 46 contests.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Lights lamp twice in OT loss
Nelson scored two goals, one on the power play, on a team-high six shots in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
His second tally of the game midway through the third period tied the score at 4-4 and earned the Islanders a point, but it was still an ugly performance overall for the team. It's Nelson's second two-goal effort in the last four games, and he now has 32 tallies and a career-high 67 points through 73 games on the season.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Tough night in Columbus
Sorokin turned aside 22 shots in Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets.
Facing the team with the worst record in the NHL, the Islanders may have taken the game lightly and didn't give Sorokin much help in the second period as the Jackets scored four times. The netminder still has only one regulation loss in his last nine starts, going 6-1-2 with a .914 save percentage over that stretch as New York tries to lock up a playoff spot.

Sorokin has coughed up six goals on 80 shots during his active three-game winning streak. The 27-year-old has improved to 26-19-6 with a strong .924 save percentage and 2.36 GAA through 53 outings. Sorokin is 3-0-0 against the Blue Jackets this season while allowing just six goals on 76 shots.

Nelson (face) is slated to play in Friday's matchup with Columbus, Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News reports.
Nelson appears set to return to action without missing any additional game time after being forced off versus Toronto on Tuesday after playing just 4:46 of ice time. With Nelson available, he figures to offer decent fantasy value considering he has already set personal bests in assists (35) and points (65) this year while also hitting the 30-goal mark for the second straight year.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Gets 25-save victory
Sorokin stopped 25 of 27 shots in a 7-2 victory over Toronto on Tuesday.
Sorokin was beaten by Sam Lafferty midway through the first period, and that proved to be the only tally in the frame. However, Sorokin got plenty of offensive support after that en route to securing his third straight win and sixth victory over his last seven appearances. The 27-year-old is 26-19-6 with a 2.34 GAA and a .925 save percentage in 53 contests this season.

Dobson collected a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 7-2 victory over Toronto.
Dobson scored late in the third period to put the Islanders up 6-2 and then registered the final assist on Anders Lee's marker. The 23-year-old defenseman's efforts extended his point streak to three games, and he has a goal and four points in that span. Dobson's contributed 13 goals and 42 points in 68 outings this season.
