  • Sharks' Mike Hoffman: Traded to San Jose

San Jose acquired Hoffman (arm) on Sunday as part of a three-team trade with Montreal and Pittsburgh. The Sharks sent Erik Karlsson to Pittsburgh in the trade in exchange for the Penguins' 2024 first-round pick, Mikael Granlund and Jan Rutta. Hoffman, who comes with a $4.5 million cap hit for the 2023-24 season, notched 14 goals and 34 points in 67 games last year. He may line up on San Jose's first or second line this campaign and might see time on the top power-play combination. Hoffman missed the final contest of the 2022-23 season with an arm injury, but the 33-year-old forward could be ready for the start of training camp.

Hoffman (arm) is questionable for Thursday's game against Boston, according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet. Hoffman appeared to sustain the injury during his last shift of Wednesday's contest. He has 14 goals and 34 points in 67 appearances this season. Montreal summoned Lucas Condotta from AHL Laval on Thursday, so he might draw into the lineup if Hoffman is unavailable.

  • Canadiens' Mike Hoffman: Helps on power play

Hoffman had a power-play assist and one shot on goal over 16:01 of ice time in Thursday's 6-2 loss to Carolina. Hoffman set up Rafael Harvey-Pinard for Montreal's second goal. He has 10 points (two goals) over the last 11 contests, including three power-play helpers. That could make him a possible trade target for teams in playoff contention, but suitors would like to see him light the lamp more. Montreal added him in 2021 to fix its power play, but he's scored just one on that unit this season (nine overall). Hoffman's trade value will increase if he can start putting pucks in the net. He has one year remaining on his contract, but Arpon Basu of The Athletic believes the Canadiens might be willing to retain some of the money on the contract.

  • Canadiens' Mike Hoffman: Three-point effort against Isles

Hoffman collected three assists in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over the Islanders. The veteran winger had a hand in Montreal's last three goals, including the OT winner -- Hoffman stepped out of the penalty box and took a pass from Mike Matheson to create a two-on-one break, and while Hoffman's shot was stopped by Semyon Varlamov, Matheson banged home the rebound. Hoffman is enjoying a surge in production that the All-Star break didn't seem to derail, racking up two goals and nine points in his last eight games, but the 33-year-old still has only nine goals and 20 points through 38 contests on the season.

The Canadiens have seven forwards on injured reserve after adding Cole Caufield (shoulder) to that list Saturday, which means Hoffman is likely to be a lineup regular following a recent stretch in which he was a healthy scratch. He skated 19:33 prior to overtime, which was Hoffman's highest TOI in the last 18 games and bettered his season average by more than five minutes.

The 33-year-old Hoffman has points in two straight games.
