Wilson's 2017 campaign was cut short by a shoulder injury that planted him on injured reserve for the season's final six games. While there's been no indication that the veteran will remain limited when training camp rolls around in late July, it wouldn't be a complete surprise if he's prevented from taking part in select drills, either. Should he continue to miss time, Quandre Diggs will likely fill in on the first-team defense, though Miles Killebrew could also see some snaps in Wilson's stead as well.

• Lions' Tavon Wilson: Staying in Detroit

  Wilson (shoulder) signed a two-year, $7 million contract to stay with the Lions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Wilson averaged 5.8 tackles per game while serving as Detroit's starting strong safety the past two seasons, adding three sacks and three interceptions in 25 games. Quandre Diggs impressed as a starting safety after Wilson landed on injured reserve in late November, but the Lions could move Diggs back to slot corner if they want to consistently keep both players on the field. New head coach Matt Patricia may believe Wilson fits best as a third safety -- still an important part of the defense -- rather than as a starter. It'll be hard to recommend either Wilson or Diggs for IDP purposes until there's some clarity regarding Patricia's intentions. In any case, Wilson should have plenty of time to recover from last season's shoulder injury before the start of training camp.

However, Quandre Diggs stepped in and performed admirably in his place, perhaps making Wilson expendable in the process. It doesn't help Wilson's chances of returning to Detroit that head coach Jim Caldwell and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin were fired.

After Wilson aggravated a shoulder injury for a third time this season in the Lions' Thanksgiving Day loss to the Vikings, the team decided to shut the safety down so he could undergo surgery. Rolan Milligan was signed off the practice squad in a corresponding move to fill Wilson's spot on the 53-man roster and restore depth in the secondary.

  Wilson (shoulder) totaled three tackles in Friday's preseason loss to the Patriots. Wilson donned a no-contact jersey in training camp, so it was good to see him flying around Friday. He logged 40 snaps in total and seems locked in as the starting strong safety ahead of Week 1. It's possible ascending backup Miles Killebrew could push him for playing time as the year goes on, but it's more likely that the Lions get Killebrew more action through the usage of three-safety sets than by taking Wilson off the field entirely.
