Patterson dominated work out of Washington's backfield in the absence of Antonio Gibson (hip/undisclosed). He accounted for 12 of Washington's 22 rushing attempts, though no other back recorded more than four carries. Patterson also made the most of his opportunity, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt while also opening the scoring in the contest with an 11-yard dash to the end zone early in the first quarter. While that was positive enough, Patterson also also finished second on the team in receptions and third in receiving yards. Assuming Gibson returns for a Week 18 matchup against the Giants, Patterson will likely be relegated back to a peripheral role in the offense.

Patterson may be headed for a larger role in Washington's game plan Sunday in Dallas with lead back Antonio Gibson (toe) listed as questionable after not practicing in any capacity this week, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
According to Matthew Paras of The Washington Times, head coach Ron Rivera said Friday that Gibson is dealing with an injury similar to the case of turf toe that sidelined the running back for two games in 2020. While Rivera noted that Gibson feels better this time around compared to last season, Standig also relayed that the coach "wasn't oozing with optimism" about the 23-year-old's chances of playing. Even if Gibson suits up Sunday, Washington could still look to lighten his workload to some degree, given that the Football Team is playing on a short week and along with the fact that he's coming off a 21-touch outing against the Eagles. Patterson has logged eight carries for 49 yards and a touchdown over the past two games, with his healthy 6.1 yards-per-carry average potentially setting him up for more work in the next few weeks even if Gibson was in better health.

The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo is one of three running backs left on the roster after Peyton Barber was released Tuesday morning, though it is possible Washington re-signs Barber after cutdown day (and thus avoids guaranteeing his salary). Even if Barber is brought back, the willingness to risk losing him suggests Washington is comfortable with Patterson in the No. 3 role. The rookie likely won't match Barber's contributions as a blocker or coverage man on special teams, but Patterson could get some touches on kick returns and would also offer a more explosive element if Washington ever needed to replace an injured Antonio Gibson or J.D. McKissic.
