Herndon (knee) has been waived/injured by the Chargers, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Herndon, who injured his knee back on July 30, is now a candidate to revert to IR in the coming days now that his bid to secure a depth wideout role with the Chargers was thwarted. In eight games with San Diego last season, Herndon recorded 24 catches for 194 yards.

Herndon was sidelined during Thursday's practice for an unknown reason, Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Herndon, one of handful receivers jockeying for additional playing time with Stevie Johnson (knee) out for at least the majority of training camp, was noticeably absent from the practice field on Thursday. While head coach Mike McCoy declined to comment on the nature of the absence, it doesn't seem to be of the serious or malicious variety. The special team ace is expected to return to the practice field shortly.

Javontee Herndon could emerge as a No. 3 receiver after Stevie Johnson sustained a torn meniscus during Sunday's practice, Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
One of a number of receivers promoted from the practice squad after injuries to Malcom Floyd and Keenan Allen decimated the receiving core in 2015, Herndon recorded at least one catch in seven of the eight games he played in, finishing with 24 receptions for 195 yards. However considering the 25-year-old also maintains an active role in the kick return unit, the Chargers may look to try out a plethora of their other young receivers, including Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams, to shore up the No. 3 WR spot before turning to Herndon.

Chargers' Javontee Herndon: Three receptions in the season finale
Herndon had three receptions on four targets for 18 yards in the season finale at Denver.
Herndon finished the year with a total of 24 receptions for 195 yards and did not score a touchdown. The release of Jacoby Jones and season-ending injury to Keenan Allen in November paved the way for Herndon to be promoted from the practice squad, and he handled kick and punt returns and also chipped in as a pass-catcher down the stretch. Still, it remains to be seen whether or not he made enough of an impression to earn a roster spot when the 2016 season rolls around.
