  • Cubs' Caleb Thielbar: Bounces back with hold Friday

Thielbar tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to earn a hold in Friday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

After allowing two runs in his last appearance before the All-Star break, Thielbar got back into a groove Friday. The veteran lefty has been scored upon only six times in 41 outings this season, leaving him with a solid 2.23 ERA to go along with 10 holds and two wins out of Chicago's bullpen. After posting a 5.32 ERA last year for Minnesota, Thielbar has bounced back in his first year with the Cubs, working as an effective bridge to closer Daniel Palencia, who earned his 13th save of the season Friday.

  • Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Hits key home run Friday

Suzuki went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

Suzuki's 26th home run of the season with two runners on in the first inning ended up being the difference in the game. The outfielder has already set a new career high in long balls, and he's now up to sixth in the majors this year. Suzuki's 80 RBI, which are also a new career best, are good for third in MLB, trailing only sluggers Cal Raleigh with 82 and Aaron Judge with 81. Now in his fourth season since coming over from Japan, Suzuki is really taking off as an offensive force for the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Daniel Palencia: Extends save streak to 13

Palencia picked up the save Friday, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to close out a 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

Called upon to protect a three-run lead, Palencia continued his excellent run in the ninth Friday, working around a base hit to record his 13th consecutive save and improve to 13-for-14 in save opportunities this season. The 25-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.53 and has now tallied 39 strikeouts across 35.1 innings of work.

  • Cubs' Colin Rea: Extends win streak to four

Rea (8-3) earned the win Friday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over five innings while recording five strikeouts.

For the fourth consecutive start, Rea earned the win and limited the damage to two or fewer runs. The only run charged to the right-hander Friday came on a third-inning RBI double by rookie Roman Anthony, but otherwise, the veteran kept Boston in check. Over this four-game win streak, the 35-year-old has quietly pieced together a 1.90 ERA with 16 strikeouts across 23.2 innings, showcasing an ability to navigate lineups with efficiency even without overpowering stuff. Rea will look to make it five straight when he takes the mound Wednesday, July 23 against Kansas City.

  • Cubs' Spencer Turnbull: Inks MiLB deal with Cubs

The Cubs signed Turnbull to a minor-league contract Friday and assigned him to their affiliate in the Arizona Complex League.

The right-hander signed a major-league contract with the Blue Jays in early May and debuted for them a month later, but he was designated for assignment June 25 after giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with a 4:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Turnbull pitched well as a swingman for Philly last season with a 2.65 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, though he was limited to just 17 appearances (seven starts) and missed the final four-plus months of the campaign due to a lat strain. The Cubs could use some rotation help, but Turnbull seems like a better fit as a long reliever or spot starter. Regardless of his role, the 33-year-old will likely need a decent showing in the minors in order to get a promotion to Chicago.

  • Cubs' Owen Caissie: Potential trade bait?

With the Cubs seeking to make a push toward the World Series this season, Caissie is a candidate to get moved before the trade deadline, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Caissie has been on fire for Triple-A Iowa, posting a .951 OPS and 19 home runs through 73 games. The 23-year-old outfielder seems ready to make his MLB debut, though he's currently blocked by the likes of Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki. The Cubs figure to be active at the deadline as they look to make a push this year, and rival teams will certainly inquire about Caissie as part of any deal, with the potential of him slotting in at the MLB level right away. If he's not traded, Caissie may debut for Chicago in 2026, particularly if Tucker departs in free agency during the offseason.

  • Cubs' Matthew Boyd: Looks good heading into second half

While Boyd has pitched more MLB innings already in 2025 than he did the last two seasons combined, he appears to be in "good shape" heading into the second half, Zack Meisel and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic report.

Boyd had an excellent first half of the season for his new organization, registering a 2.34 ERA and 102 strikeouts across 111.2 innings, which earned him an All-Star selection. The veteran lefty has dealt with a variety of injuries the past few years, and he only managed to log 110.2 major-league innings in 2023 and 2024 combined. While Boyd won't pitch in the All-Star Game to preserve his arm for the second half, the club feels good about how he's responded to the increased workload. "Everything we're looking at with Matt is in really good shape," Chicago manager Craig Counsell said. "There's no signs right now of him slowing down. He's getting better." Boyd may have some minor limitations after the break, but he appears to be in a good position to keep helping fantasy managers.

  • Cubs' Miguel Amaya: Rehab assignment likely coming soon

Amaya (oblique) will likely begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star break and is expected to need about a week's worth of games before returning to the Cubs, MLB.com reports.

Amaya has taken batting practice and completed a few bullpen catching sessions in his rehab work so far, but he's yet to see live game action since landing on the injured list with a left oblique injury on May 24. The backstop now appears to be one step closer to returning to the majors, and when he does, he'll compete with Carson Kelly for work behind the plate, though Kelly has played well this year and is likely to remain Chicago's No. 1 catcher for the time being. Amaya compiled a .280/.313/.505 slash line with four home runs and 25 RBI in 27 games before getting injured.

  • Cubs' Kade Snell: Selected by Cubs

The Cubs have selected Snell with the 151st overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Snell worked as a two-way player early in his college career but shifted to playing as Alabama's full-time left fielder in 2025. He had a 1.039 OPS with 10 homers in 58 games during his senior season, and he's more of a balanced hitter than a true power threat. He doesn't offer much on the bases and didn't record a steal during his two years with the Crimson Tide.

  • Cubs' Kaleb Wing: Snagged by Cubs

The Cubs have selected Wing with the 121st overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

A two-way prep player from California, Wing had been a defensive-minded shortstop before breaking out this spring on the mound, where he doesn't have as much history. Wing's fastball was up to 95 mph this spring with a curveball that could be plus. At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, he should add good weight and likely more velocity in the coming years.
