Chychrun (illness) is set to return Sunday versus the Blue Jackets, according to Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.

Chychrun (illness) is expected to be a game-time decision Sunday versus Columbus, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

Chychrun has missed Washington's past two games due to the illness. He has 20 goals and 47 points in 72 appearances in 2024-25. Alexander Alexeyev is expected to be a healthy scratch if Chychrun is able to return.

  • Capitals' John Carlson: Sitting out Sunday

Carlson (rest) won't play against Columbus on Sunday, according to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

Carlson will skip the second half of Washington's back-to-back set versus the Blue Jackets for maintenance. He has accounted for five goals, 51 points, 167 shots on net and 131 blocked shots through 79 appearances this season. Carlson will probably play Tuesday versus the Islanders or Thursday against the Penguins before the beginning of the playoffs. Dylan McIlrath will replace Carlson in Sunday's lineup.

  • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Drawing back into lineup

Ovechkin (rest) will be in the lineup Sunday against Columbus, according to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

Ovechkin didn't play in Saturday's 7-0 loss to the Blue Jackets so that he could get a bit of rest ahead of the playoffs. He has 42 goals and 70 points in 62 appearances in 2024-25. Ethen Frank will be a healthy scratch due to Ovechkin's return.

  • Capitals' Terik Parascak: Heads to AHL

Parascak was loaned to AHL Hershey on Sunday.

Parascak will make the jump to the AHL after tallying 28 goals and 82 points in 59 games with Prince George in the WHL. At only 18 years old, Parascak will likely need some time to develop in the minors, though he's one of the Capitals' top offensive prospects.

  • Capitals' Hunter Shepard: Jumped by Jackets

Shepard made 19 saves in Saturday's 7-0 loss to the Blue Jackets.

With Washington having the top seed in the Eastern Conference locked up and resting both Alex Ovechkin and Charlie Lindgren ahead of the playoffs, Shepard didn't get a lot of help against a Columbus squad fighting for its life. It was the first NHL appearance of the season for the 29-year-old netminder. While Lindgren will likely get the nod Sunday in a rematch with the Blue Jackets, Shepard could be between the pipes for one of the Caps' two remaining regular-season games next week, Tuesday against the Islanders or Thursday against the Penguins.

  • Capitals' Jakob Chychrun: Not available Saturday

Chychrun (illness) will miss Saturday's tilt in Columbus, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.

Chychrun will miss his second consecutive game. The team might simply be being cautious with him after clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Chychrun has 20 goals and 27 assists, including 15 points on the power play this season. Alexander Alexeyev will enter the lineup to replace Chychrun.

Shepard will make his first start since being promoted from AHL Hershey on April 4. He has gone 22-11-3 with a 2.81 GAA and an .891 save percentage over 37 minor-league appearances this season. Columbus ranks 11th in the NHL this season with 3.17 goals per game.

  • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Resting Saturday

Ovechkin (rest) will not play Saturday in Columbus, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

Ovechkin will get the night off as the Capitals have clinched first overall in the Eastern Conference. The superstar winger has 42 goals, 28 assists, 227 shots on net and 106 hits across 62 appearances this season. Ethen Frank will replace Ovechkin in the lineup. Ovechkin will likely return to action Sunday in a return match with the Blue Jackets.

  • Capitals' Alexander Alexeyev: Back in press box since loan

Alexeyev has not played in the 16 games since he returned from his conditioning loan with AHL Hershey on March 6.

Alexeyev could have had a chance to play Thursday versus the Hurricanes when left-shot defenseman Jakob Chychrun (illness) was out, but the right-handed Dylan McIlrath drew in instead. This paints a clear picture that Alexeyev is eighth on the depth chart on defense, so it would take at least two absences to the Capitals' regular blueliners to get him in the lineup. He hasn't played an NHL game since Nov. 8.

  • Capitals' Brandon Duhaime: Sends assist

Duhaime logged an assist, two shots on goal, two hits, two blocked shots and five PIM in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over the Hurricanes.

Duhaime has chipped in four points over his last 10 outings. The 27-year-old forward continues to play in a fourth-line role, bringing plenty of grit to the lineup. He's also had a career year on offense with nine goals, 12 assists and 80 shots on net over 78 appearances. Duhaime has added 96 PIM, 153 hits, 60 blocked shots and a plus-6 rating.

  • Capitals' Rasmus Sandin: Puts up helper Thursday

Sandin notched an assist, two blocked shots and a minus-3 rating in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over the Hurricanes.

Sandin has eight assists over 19 games since the start of March. The 25-year-old continues to fill a top-four role and has picked up power-play time on the second unit. For the season, he's at 29 points, 77 shots on net, 113 blocked shots, 91 hits and a plus-18 rating over 78 appearances. He has up to four more chances to get to the 30-point mark for the second time in his career.

  • Capitals' Pierre-Luc Dubois: Sets career high in points

Dubois scored a power-play goal on four shots in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over Carolina.

Dubois played the hero in Thursday's game by not only opening the scoring for the Capitals on a power play in the first period, but also by netting the game-winning goal in the shootout. His power-play tally marked a new career high in points and his 20th goal of the season. Overall, the 26-year-old center is up to 64 points in 78 appearances this season. He's now reached the 60-point mark four times and has 20 or more goals in five of his eight NHL seasons. His tally Thursday ended a three-game scoreless skid and could have him back on track to provide solid fantasy value in all formats for the remainder of the fantasy playoffs.

  • Capitals' Nic Dowd: Sets career high in points

Dowd tallied a goal, fired three shots on net, blocked three shots and dished out three hits in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over Carolina.

Dowd found the back of the net for Washington's third goal of the night and was the first of two twine finders in 38 seconds late in the second period. Thursday's goal helped Dowd set a new career high in points, besting the 25 he recorded in 2022-23. Overall, the 34-year-old Dowd has 14 goals, 26 points and 122 hits in 78 appearances this season. While Dowd lacks high-end fantasy value, he's ending the season on a high note with a new personal best for his resume and a solid five points and 19 hits in his last 15 games.

  • Capitals' Dylan Strome: Notches power-play goal

Strome scored a power-play goal and tallied three shots on net in Thursday's 5-4 shootout win over the Hurricanes.

Strome lit the lamp for Washington's second power-play goal of the night and the team's first tally of the second period. Overall, the 28-year-old center has 26 goals, 77 points and 137 shots on net in 78 appearances this season. With Thursday's tally, Strome extended his point streak to six games in which he has three markers and six helpers in that span. Strome is paying dividends for fantasy managers who took the top-line center at the start of the season. He is currently tied for 25th in points with Tampa Bay's Jake Guentzel. With a few games left in the regular season, Strome has a chance to reach the 80-point mark for the first time in his career. He has excellent value in all fantasy formats for the remainder of this year's action.
