  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Headed for IR

Gray (shoulder) will be placed on injured reserve Thursday and will miss a minimum of four games, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The earliest he can make his 2023 debut is Week 5 against Dallas on Oct. 8. Until then, Jauan Jennings won't have much competition for the No. 3 receiver gig, though that role is de-emphasized in a 49ers offense that often uses a fullback and sometimes a second tight end. With fellow depth wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud (wrist) also out for the start of the season, seventh-round rookie Ronnie Bell could get some snaps off the bench early on in 2023.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Sprains shoulder

Gray has a sprained joint in his right shoulder, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.

Gray injured his shoulder during San Francisco's win versus the Broncos on Saturday and will now likely miss the start of the season. The 2022 third-round pick could now find his roster spot in jeopardy as he only caught one pass on seven targets for 10 yards during his rookie season

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: May have suffered collarbone injury

Gray (shoulder) will have additional testing done to determine if he suffered a collarbone injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Gray exited Saturday's 21-20 preseason win over the Broncos early with a shoulder injury and initial X-rays were unclear, so the wide receiver will undergo more testing to determine the severity. The wide receiver is competing for a final roster spot, and a prolonged absence would likely end his chances.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Exits with shoulder injury

Gray (shoulder) exited Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos and will not return, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Gray wasn't targeted before leaving in the first half. After playing just 85 offensive snaps as a rookie last season, Gray is competing for a roster spot this summer. Missing time with an injury won't help his cause.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Rarely sees field in rookie year

Gray finished his rookie campaign with one reception (seven targets) for 10 yards and one rush for nine yards in the regular season.

Gray logged just 85 offensive snaps across 13 active games, failing to crack the regular rotation even in relief of injured starters. Head coach Kyle Shanahan drew up a couple of gadget plays for his third-round wideout, but he didn't trust the rookie in meaningful moments this season. Perhaps Gray sees more usage in his sophomore campaign, but he will have to fight up several spots on the receiver depth chart during training camp to be worth monitoring in fantasy.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Logs full activity

Gray (hamstring) practiced fully Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Gray sustained an apparent hamstring injury during last Thursday's win over Seattle, but his ability to partake in Tuesday's session without limitations implies that the rookie third-rounder should be good to go for this weekend's matchup against the Commanders. Gray will likely handle a rotational pass-catching role behind Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud in Week 16.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Considered day-to-day

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Gray (hamstring) is considered day-to-day, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Gray suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of Thursday's 21-13 win over Seattle and didn't return. However, he appears to have avoided a significant injury and could return to action in Week 16. The rookie third-round pick has made 10 appearances this season, securing just one of seven targets for 10 yards across 62 offensive snaps.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Questionable to return Thursday

Gray is questionable to return to Thursday Night Football against Seattle with a hamstring injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Gray appears to have injured his hamstring during the second half, though it's unclear when or how this injury occurred. The rookie third-rounder made the first catch of his career during last week's 35-7 win over Tampa Bay, and he's seen sparse usage over nine games this season. With Gray sidelined for the time being, expect Willie Snead to step up into a bigger role after being elevated from the practice squad for Thursday's divisional matchup.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Makes first career reception

Gray played 13 of the 49ers' 59 snaps on offense and finished with one catch for 10 yards on his lone target in Sunday's 35-7 win over the Buccaneers.

After failing to haul in any of the six targets he drew over his eight NFL games, Gray finally came through with a reception in garbage time of the Week 14 contest. With Deebo Samuel (knee/ankle) exiting the contest with an injury that is expected to sideline him for around three weeks, Gray will be in line to suit up for Thursday's game in Seattle, but the rookie out of SMU isn't guaranteed to take on a major role. Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud are likely to serve as the 49ers' preferred wideout trio, and head coach Kyle Shanahan could also hand more reps to fullback Kyle Juszczyk or feature more two-tight end sets while Samuel is sidelined.

  • 49ers' Danny Gray: Turns in full practice

Gray (ankle) was a full participant in Friday's practice, 49ers Webzone reports.

Gray hurt his ankle in warmups prior to Sunday's game against the Chargers and did not play a snap. However, he's now on track to return to the field Monday against Arizona after turning in the full practice Friday. He's battled a hip injury and illness as well this season, limiting him to only six targets -- and no catches -- across five games.
