Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Sitting out again Week 16
Sweeney (coach's decision) has been deemed inactive for Saturday's game against the Bears.
Sweeney will be a healthy scratch for the second straight week. The 27-year-old has not logged a target since Week 6, as Quintin Morris has served as the No. 2 tight end behind Dawson Knox for the majority of the season. Barring injuries to Morris or Knox, it's likely Sweeney will remain inactive for the final two weeks of the regular season as well.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Sees season-high 23 snaps
Sweeney went without a target while he was on the field for 23 of the Bills' 56 offensive snaps in Sunday's 38-3 win over the Steelers.
Active for just the second time all season while top tight end Dawson Knox (foot) was sidelined, Sweeney served as the Bills' No. 2 option at the position while Quintin Morris drew the start. Morris (three receptions for 39 yards on five targets) proved to be a capable replacement for Knox as a pass catcher and should continue to see the lion's share of the snaps at tight end if Knox should miss further time.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Indirect promotion
Sweeney's teammate O.J. Howard was released by the Bills on Tuesday.
Howard, a 2017 first-rounder for the Buccaneers, never really shined for the Bills this summer while Sweeney took a big step forward, as he's been praised by the coaching staff for weeks. Unless the Bills bring in a veteran, the 2019 seventh-round selection is set to serve as the No. 2 tight end behind Dawson Knox, and Sweeney could get plenty of looks in a high-powered offense should Knox go down with injury.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Finishes preseason strong
Sweeney caught both of his targets for 36 yards during Friday's preseason loss against the Panthers.
Sweeney has been praised in camp by the coaching staff for taking a step up in his summer work. He currently sits third on the tight-end depth chart, but there's some scuttlebutt that O.J. Howard might be a roster cut. If that happens, Sweeney will make the Week 1 roster for sure, and there's a chance he could make it anyway as a third tight end.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Back at practice
Sweeney (undisclosed) was participating at minicamp Wednesday, Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News reports.
Sweeney was held out of practice last week due to an unspecified injury, but he's been able to retake the field. The 26-year-old appeared in 13 games for the Bills last season and caught nine passes for 44 yards and one touchdown, and he should enter 2022 as the No. 3 option at tight end behind Dawson Knox and O.J. Howard.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Sidelined with injury
Sweeney (undisclosed) did not participate in Tuesday's training session, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Sweeney was on the sideline for Tuesday's organized team activity while nursing an undisclosed injury. He enters the season as the third option at tight end behind Dawson Knox and O.J. Howard.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Path to targets gets murkier
Sweeney appears to be the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart following Buffalo's signing of O.J. Howard this week.
Dawson Knox will remain the starter, but Howard has a stronger skillset and more NFL experience than Sweeney, so the latter is now the No. 3 entering offseason work. After catching just 17 balls over his first two NFL seasons, the 2019 seventh-rounder may have some work to do just to make the team.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Maintains clear-cut backup role
Sweeney played in 13 games during the 2021 regular season, catching nine of 12 targets for 44 yards and one touchdown.
Top tight end Dawson Knox sat out two games due to injury in the middle of the season, but even when he was moved into an elevated role in his stead, Sweeney proved he's nowhere near the pass catcher that Knox is. While taking on a 34 percent snap share for the season, Sweeney was mostly utilized for his blocking skills and not his hands. Knox isn't going anywhere since he's now at or near the upper echelon of NFL tight ends, so the best Sweeney can hope for is that the Bills don't bring in too much competition this offseason. After missing all of 2020 due to a heart condition related to COVID-19, Sweeney's best performance in any game since his 2019 rookie campaign is a modest 3-30-0 receiving line in Week 8 this past season.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: To sit against Pats
Sweeney appears to be a healthy scratch Week 16 against New England.
Sweeney logged 22 offensive snaps last week against Carolina despite dealing with a hip injury for the past several weeks. While he avoided the injury report this week, the tight end ultimately won't be suiting up on game day. Since Week 10, Sweeney has seen a combined two targets on offense, becoming largely an afterthought when starter Dawson Knox is healthy.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Will play Sunday
Sweeney (hip) will play Sunday against the Panthers.
Sweeney was able to log a full practice Friday and has been removed from the injury report going into Sunday against the Panthers. Despite being second on the tight end positional depth chart, Sweeney plays a limited role in the Bills offense.
