Player Outlook
Jakob Marsee was a nice sleeper prospect last season before fully breaking out in the Arizona Fall League. The 22-year-old lefty-hitting outfielder slashed .274/.413/.428 with 16 home runs, 46 steals (83.6% success rate) and more walks (98) than strikeouts (97) in 129 games between High-A and Double-A. He then slashed .391/.509/.707 with five home runs and 16 steals in 24 AFL games. Marsee is said to have good makeup and is known for getting the most out of his physical tools, as he lacks above-average raw power or speed, and gets by because of his discerning eye at the plate and good instincts on the bases. He could be a Lars Nootbaar type of leadoff hitter who hits lower in the order or sits against lefties, but given that he has only played 16 games at Double-A and has never been young for his level, it's still not a given that Marsee will get to enough power against high-level pitching to avoid fourth-outfielder duty. A couple things working in his favor are San Diego's shallow depth chart and his ability to play all three outfield spots.

  • Marlins' Jakob Marsee: Shipped to Miami

    The Padres traded Marsee, Dillon Head, Woo-suk Go and Nathan Martorella to the Marlins on Friday in exchange for Luis Arraez, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Marsee got off to a hot start at Double-A when he arrived in San Antonio near the end of last season, but he has struggled to get going in 2024, slashing .185/.337/.333 with five RBI across 103 plate appearances. He'll likely remain in Double-A as he moves to the Marlins' farm system, but a return to form at the plate could warrant a promotion to Triple-A Jacksonville before the end of the year.

  • Padres' Jakob Marsee: Keeps hitting at Double-A

    Marsee is slashing .294/.478/.471 with one home run and two stolen bases in six games since being promoted from High-A Fort Wayne to Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday. Marsee was elevated to Double-A along with two of the Padres' other top position prospects, catcher Ethan Salas and first baseman Nathan Martorella. Despite the jump in competition, the 22-year-old outfielder has continued to excel early on at San Antonio, reaching base at least twice in all five of his starts thus far.
