Amburgey landed on the injured list with a strained hamstring July 20, so he shouldn't require more than a few rehab games. The 27-year-old is unlikely to see much action for the Yankees once healthy following the addition of Joey Gallo at the trade deadline.

Amburgey (hamstring) was spotted taking part in defensive work Thursday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports.
After being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre coming out of the All-Star break while the Yankees were without multiple key outfielders, Amburgey appeared in only two games before going down with an injury of his own. His ability to take part in defensive drills seemingly represents a step forward in the recovery process for the 26-year-old, but he's still likely a week or more away from returning from the 10-day injured list. Since Amburgey was shut down, the Yankees have gotten Aaron Judge back from the COVID-19 IL and acquired Joey Gallo from the Rangers, so the team likely won't have a big need for the rookie in the outfield once he's back to full health.

Yankees' Trey Amburgey: Moves to IL with hammy strain
The Yankees placed Amburgey on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right hamstring strain.
New York initially described Amburgey's hamstring injury as a "cramp" after he exited Sunday's win over the Red Sox, but follow-up tests evidently turned up a more serious concern. Following his call-up last weekend, the 26-year-old rookie appeared in just two games before hitting the shelf. The Yankees called up Estevan Florial from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move, and he could push for a near-everyday role in the outfield in the short term while the big club waits for at least one of Amburgey, Aaron Judge (COVID-19), Miguel Andujar (wrist) and Clint Frazier (eye) to return from the injured list.

Amburgey was diagnosed with a right hamstring cramp after he left Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
It's not yet clear whether Amburgey's injury will force him to miss additional time, but he'll at least be able to recover during the Yankees' scheduled off day Monday. He should be considered day-to-day for now, but Ryan LaMarre and Greg Allen could see additional playing time in the team's depleted outfield if the 26-year-old is sidelined going forward.

Amburgey's contract was selected by the Yankees on Thursday.
The Yankees have gotten very little production from outfielders not named Aaron Judge this season, so they'll throw Amburgey into the mix and see if he can outperform the team's struggling incumbents. Amburgey isn't a particularly exciting prospect, as you might expect from a player who's getting his first call-up at age 26, but his .312/.379/.582 slash line in 38 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season is certainly good enough to earn him a look. Exactly where he factors into the outfield mix should become clear over the next few days, but the Yankees have plenty of at-bats available in the outfield at the moment with both Miguel Andujar (wrist) and Clint Frazier (illness) sidelined, so it's likely he earns some opportunities right away.

While Amburgey has been largely left out of the discussion regarding the Yankees' outfield depth in the wake of injuries to Giancarlo Stanton (calf) and Aaron Judge (rib), he made a strong impression in Triple-A ball last year, hitting .274 with 22 home runs and a .822 OPS. Amburgey did strike out 112 times, but manager Aaron Boone indicated Friday that he is on the team's radar. "He's a good athlete and a good player. Sometimes, it's these things that open up opportunities," Boone remarked, referencing the sudden spate of injuries to the team's outfielders.
