Astros' Ryan Pressly: Blows save chance
Pressly allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks while striking out one across one inning to blow the save Saturday against the Nationals.
Josh Hader threw 30 pitches to convert a save Friday, likely leaving him unavailable Saturday. Pressly was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning as a result, though he failed to do so through a combination of bad luck and poor pitching. The leadoff man reached base on catcher's interference, but Pressly then proceeded to surrender a double and single that resulted in two runs crossing the plate. Pressly had pitched fairly well recently, but he's now allowed at least one earned run in five of 10 games this season with an overall ERA of 8.31.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Turns in clean outing
Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one across a scoreless inning to earn a hold Friday against the Nationals.
Pressly had significant struggles to begin the season, allowing six earned runs across his first 2.2 innings. While his ratios are still bloated, he's since allowed only one earned run across his last five frames while maintaining a 7:3 K:BB in that span. Josh Hader converted the save in Friday's win, though he has allowed at least one earned in five of his 11 appearances to this point.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Saddled with Opening Day loss
Pressly (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one.
Pressly was tasked with preserving a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning against the middle of the Yankees order. The right-hander surrendered a lead-off double to Aaron Judge, who would come around to score on an Alex Verdugo sacrifice fly. It's a tough start to the year for the 35-year-old Pressly, who was already destined for a reduced role after Houston brought in Josh Hader to handle closing duties. Pressly converted 31 of 37 save chances last season, sporting a 3.58 ERA with 74:16 K:BB over 65.1 innings.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Confirmed as setup man
Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed Wednesday that Pressly will serve as a setup man when Josh Hader is available to close games, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
When the Astros announced Hader's signing to a five-year, $95 million deal in late January, general manager Dana Brown was initially evasive when asked to define the roles of the team's relievers, though the prevailing assumption was that Hader -- a five-time All-Star -- would take over as Houston's full-time closer. Espada put to rest any thought that the Astros might opt for a two-pronged approach to the ninth inning, despite Pressly's strong track record as Houston's primary closer for the past four seasons. Pressly had already begun to show signs of skills degradation in 2023 -- his 3.58 ERA, 3.61 xERA and 21.6 K-BB% last season were all his worst marks of his five full seasons in Houston -- but the 35-year-old still profiles as a reliable setup man in front of Hader and a capable fill-in closer on the occasions Hader isn't available. Even so, the lack of reliable save opportunities moving forward largely limits Pressly's fantasy appeal to deeper leagues or AL-only leagues.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: In line for setup role
Pressly is expected to serve in a setup role for the Astros following the signing of Josh Hader, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Manager Joe Espada declined to name a closer when asked Saturday at the team's FanFest event. However, Rome writes of Espada that he "sounded like a manager who will eventually name a standalone closer," and that's fully expected to be Hader. The team spoke to Pressly before agreeing to terms with Hader and Pressly is "all in" on the move, per Espada. Pressly should still be rosterable in deep leagues even in a setup role, but clearly his fantasy stock is way down following the Hader move.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Secures 31st save
Pressly allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out one over one inning to earn the save in Friday's 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Pressly danced with danger after Alek Thomas reached on an error and Gabriel Moreno sent him home with an RBI double. Pressly was still able to get the job done, earning his first save since Sept. 9. The closer is up to 31 saves in 37 chances this season while logging a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 74:16 K:BB through 65.1 innings overall.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Picks up fourth win
Pressly (4-5) did not allow a baserunner across one inning to earn the win Wednesday against the Orioles.
Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with the score tied at 1-1 and needed only nine pitches to retire the side. It was an important outing given that Pressly has struggled of late, allowing five earned runs combined across his previous two appearances. Those struggles have extended further, as he's posted just a 5.41 ERA and 1.41 WHIP -- albeit with a 29:5 K:BB -- across 22.2 innings since the All-Star break. There's no indication that Pressly is in line to lose his job as the closer, but he has become a liability (at least in the short term) for the Astros as they make their push to the postseason.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Stumbles vs. Orioles
Pressly (3-5) blew the save and took the loss Monday against the Orioles. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three over one inning.
Tasked with protecting a two-run lead in the ninth, Pressly surrendered a pair of one-out singles before Cedric Mullins launched a three-run homer, sticking Pressly with his sixth blown save and the eventual loss. The right-hander's now given up five runs over his last two appearances after holding opponents scoreless in 11 of the previous 12 outings. Overall, Pressly has 30 saves on the year with a 3.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 71:13 K:BB across 61 innings.

Pressly was called upon to pitch in the ninth inning with a six-run lead, as he had not taken the mound since Saturday. After retiring the first batter he faced, he allowed three straight batters to reach base, which ultimately accounted for the two earned runs surrendered. Pressly has a 5.23 ERA and 1.35 WHIP since the All-Star break while allowing at least one earned run in six of his 21 appearances, but there's no indication that his role as closer is in jeopardy.

Pressly earned a save against the Padres on Saturday, allowing a hit and issuing a walk while striking out three batters in one inning.
Pressly got the ball in the ninth inning with the Astros up two runs. The Padres sandwiched a walk and a single around a Fernando Tatis strikeout to put the tying run on base, but Pressly rebounded by striking out Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts to escape the danger. The veteran closer thus earned his 30th save of the season, marking the second time in his career that he's reached that mark. Pressly tallied a career-best 33 saves last season.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Nails down 29th save
Pressly gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 29th save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Red Sox.
It didn't look like the right-hander would be needed as Houston raced out to a 7-0 lead through four innings, but Pressly was ready when he got the call. The 34-year-old hadn't pitched in four days after blowing his last save chance, but with the Astros in a three-way dogfight for the AL West title, he may not be afforded too many more chances to rest down the stretch. In 17.2 innings since the All-Star break, Pressly's stumbled to a 5.09 ERA and 1.30 WHIP despite a 21:2 K:BB.

Astros' Ryan Pressly: Suffers ugly blown save
Pressly allowed four runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning to take a blown save in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Tigers.
Pressly struck out the first two batters of the ninth inning as he looked to preserve a one-run lead. It wasn't meant to be however, as he gave up three consecutive singles, the third one being a broken-bat hit by Javier Baez which plated the tying run. Parker Meadows then launched a walk-off, three-run home run. Pressly finished July in a rut but had been unscored upon in his first seven appearances in August before this bump in the road.
