After a week and a half of intra-squad competition, the Falcons will head to Dalton, Ga., on Monday afternoon to practice against the Tennessee Titans. The event, which begins at 4:30 p.m., will take place at Coahulla Creek High School and is free and open to the public.

It’s the third consecutive year the Falcons have practiced against another team. In the last two years, the Falcons have held preseason practices against the New England Patriots as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The last time Atlanta practiced against the Titans in 2004, the competition got too intense and saw a number of fights break out. QB Michael Vick incurred a strained right hamstring as a result.

“It’s going to be a nice controlled scrimmage,” TE Tony Gonzalez said to Orlando Ledbetter. “It will be nothing like where we are going to go out there and tear each other’s heads off. “We’re just going to go out there and try and get better.”

These two teams aren’t completely unfamiliar with one another as last season the Falcons beat Tennessee 23-17 in Week 11 at the Georgia Dome. The practice will be fairly standard, according to Falcons coach Mike Smith, but both teams will benefit from fresh competition.

“There will be two practices going on at once,” Smith said. “There will be 7-on-7, some pass rush, some situations, some no-huddle, and two-minutes which will be good for both teams.”

It will be the final tuneup against another opponent before the Falcons open their preseason schedule Thursday night at home vs. Baltimore.

Transactions at RB: The Falcons waived Robbie Frey on Saturday, a college free agent signed this offseason out of Kutztown University. As a replacement, they signed Richard Medlin, who bounced around between the New England and Miami organizations last season.

Medlin rushed for 2,792 yards and 28 touchdowns in four seasons at Division II Fayetteville University.

“He’s a returner, he’s a solid runner,” Smith said. “We had an idea of what kind of guy he is and the role he was in last year [with Miami].”

Grimes held out of practice: CB Brent Grimes missed Sunday’s practice with a foot injury that is reportedly unrelated to a knee injury which caused him to miss five games last season.

“We held him out [Sunday]. We’re trying to get him back and ready to go,” Smith told Ledbetter.

Grimes had 49 tackles last season, including one forced fumble and an interception. He’s expected to start at CB alongside Asante Samuel and Dunta Robinson
