  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Manages assist Saturday

Johnston logged an assist and three shots on goal in Saturday's 8-1 win over the Lightning.

Johnston's offense continues to come in bursts -- he's produced five multi-point efforts this year, but he's yet to get on the scoresheet more than two games in a row. He's also had just one drought of three contests. The 20-year-old center has picked up nine goals, eight assists, 53 shots on net, 14 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating over 22 appearances. A little more consistency would be helpful, but he remains on the Stars' third line with Jamie Benn, so high-quality scoring chances could be tough to find.

  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Scores twice in loss

Johnston scored a pair of goals on four shots and blocked two shots in Friday's 7-4 loss to the Flames.

Johnston tallied 1:13 into the game to open the scoring and added a second goal in the middle frame. The second-year center has picked up five goals and three assists over his last seven appearances. For the season, he's at nine tallies, seven helpers, 49 shots on net, 12 PIM and a plus-1 rating through 19 contests. He had 41 points in 82 contests as a rookie last year, but it seems like a stretch to think he can sustain his current pace over a full campaign.

Johnston had gone minus-4 over his previous two games, prompting a lineup shuffle for the Stars. The 20-year-old responded with the primary assist on Mason Marchment's power-play marker that put the Stars ahead 3-2 in the third period. Johnston is up to 14 points, 41 shots on net and 12 PIM through 17 outings this season, but he hasn't gotten on the scoresheet more than two games in a row.

  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Two points in Winnipeg

Johnston scored a shorthanded goal and added a power-play assist in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Jets.

The 20-year-old stole the puck at the Winnipeg blue line early in the second period with an aggressive forecheck before beating Connor Hellebuyck on the short side, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead. Johnston then helped set up Matt Duchene for the eventual game-winner later in the frame. The 2021 first-round pick has had a strong start to his sophomore NHL campaign, racking up five goals and 10 points in 13 games. There's room for further growth in his numbers as Johnston's role increases -- Saturday's helper was his first point of the season on the power play.

  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Finds goal in loss

Johnston scored a goal on two shots and went plus-2 in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Bruins.

Johnston got the Stars on the board at 5:09 of the third period. The 20-year-old had gone three games without a point to open November after posting seven points in as many outings in October. He's still young and in a middle-six role, so there's some ups and downs to be expected. The center has four goals, four helpers, 26 shots on net, eight blocked shots, 10 PIM and a plus-5 rating through 11 appearances this season.

  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Will skate this weekend

Johnston (upper body) recently underwent a non-surgical procedure and is expected to skate over the weekend, Saad Yousuf of The Athletic reports.

This effectively rules Johnston out of the Stars' final two preseason games. The 20-year-old's return to the ice bodes well for his Opening Night availability next Thursday versus the Blues. Once healthy, Johnston figures to play in a middle-six role with some power-play time in 2023-24.

Despite Johnston suffering a slight setback in his recovery, DeBoer said the issue is "nothing major or concerning."
