Top Zach Werenski News

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Carries offense in shootout win

Werenski scored two goals in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers.

Both tallies were impressive, and both of them tied the score for the Blue Jackets. Werenski stole the puck at his own blue line midway through the first period and beat Ivan Fedotov on a breakaway before ripping home a one-timer on a slick feed from Kirill Marchenko late in the third. The 27-year-old Werenski has stayed healthy this season and is having a breakout campaign under new head coach Dean Evason, and he seems to be getting stronger. Werenski has produced six multi-point performances in the last 10 games, a stretch in which he's erupted for four goals and 18 points with 54 shots on net, 17 blocked shots and a plus-7 rating.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Five-game, nine-point streak

Werenski had a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Kraken on Thursday. The goal stood as the game-winner.

Werenski has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in a five-game point streak, and his 48 points put him in second in the NHL, one point behind Cale Makar in scoring by defensemen. Werenski makes the game look simple, and if he can pick up the pace slightly, he could flirt with a 100-point season.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: On four-game point streak

Werenski provided a power-play assist in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Penguins.

Werenski helped out on Adam Fantilli's game-tying tally late in the third period. During his four-game point streak, Werenski has a goal and six assists while adding a plus-3 rating, 27 shots on net and nine blocked shots. The 27-year-old is showing just how good he can be when he has good health on his side. Overall, Werenski is at 12 goals, 34 helpers, 161 shots on net, 71 blocked shots and a plus-6 rating through 41 appearances. He's 11 points away from matching his career-best total from last season, and if his second half of 2024-25 is as good as the first, he could be up for Norris Trophy consideration.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Home scoring streak at 15 games

Werenski picked up two assists Saturday in a 6-4 win over the Blues.

Werenski extended his home point streak to 15 games (nine goals, 21 assists). His stretch pass to Adam Fantilli early in the third was flat-out filthy -- he fired it from behind his own net and laid a perfect bounce off the right-wing boards to Fantilli, who was at the St. Louis blue line. Werenski sits second in the NHL in scoring from the blue line with 45 points in 40 games and second in goals (12), too. He's having a Norris-caliber season; let's hope voters don't overlook him because of his jersey.

It was another big performance for the 27-year-old blueliner, who nearly single-handedly kept the Blue Jackets in the game after they fell behind 3-1 in the first period. Werenski has three multi-point efforts in the last five games, a stretch in which he's erupted for a goal and 11 points, and on the season he's already amassed 12 goals and 43 points in 39 appearances as he roars toward a career-best campaign.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Huge workload in shootout win

Werenski produced a power-play assist while adding a game-high 11 shots on net in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Hurricanes.

The veteran blueliner saw an incredible 30:07 of ice time, and that was on a night when coach Dean Evason elected to go with 11 forwards and seven defensemen. Werenski scored a career-high 57 points (11 goals, 46 assists) in 2023-24 over 70 games, but he's on pace to shatter that mark in 2024-25. Through 38 appearances, he's already amassed 11 goals and 40 points, and his 145 shots on net puts him fifth in the NHL and first among all defenseman, behind only David Pastrnak (156), Brady Tkachuk (150), Nathan MacKinnon (148) and Jack Hughes (147). With the Blue Jackets surprisingly within striking distance of a playoff spot, Werenski is positioning himself to garner Norris Trophy votes at the end of the season.

Werenski recorded four assists, including three on the power play, in Friday's 6-2 win over the Bruins.

Werenski didn't find the back of the net, but that didn't prevent him from being one of the standout performers in this thumping win. He has notched seven assists over his last two games, and he's been nothing short of outstanding over the past few weeks. He's up to 12 assists and three goals in 14 December appearances.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: In lineup against Montreal

Werenski (leg) will be available for Monday's home matchup with the Canadiens, per Jeff Svoboda of the Blue Jackets' official site.

Werenski is managing an injury to his left leg, but he'll give it a go in the last game before the league's Christmas break. The star defenseman will skate in his usual spot on the top defensive pairing alongside Dante Fabbro.

  • Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski: Managing leg injury

Werenski's status for Monday's game against the Canadiens is in question due to a left leg injury, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Werenski said after Monday's morning skate that his injured left leg is "feeling OK," but a decision on his status against Montreal won't come until closer to puck drop. Following Monday's game, the Blue Jackets will have three days off due to the league's Christmas break, so he could sit against Montreal to give himself extra time to rest.

The defenseman has three goals and five assists over his last 11 contests, which is actually a bit of a decline in production. Overall, he's at 11 goals, 32 points (13 on the power play), 115 shots on net, 52 blocked shots and a plus-6 rating through 33 appearances this season. Werenski continues to return excellent value in fantasy while playing massive minutes for Columbus.

Werenski is on a three-game, three-point, power-play scoring streak that includes two goals and one assist. He sits third in the NHL in scoring with 30 points (29 games), but most impressively, his 10 goals are the most among NHL blueliners. Werenski set a career-best mark in points (57) last season, but he's about to blow that finish out of the water. He's a fantasy pillar.

Werenski had an assist, two shots on goal and three blocked shots in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Oilers.

The blueliner has eight goals, 19 helpers, 92 shots on net, 40 blocked shots and a plus-11 rating through 25 appearances. In addition to his NHL success, Werenski will represent Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.

Werenski's putting it all together this season with eight goals, 18 assist, 86 shots on net, 35 blocked shots and a plus-12 rating through 23 appearances. Werenski tied the Blue Jackets record for longest point streak by a defenseman set by Bryan Berard (2005-06) and Jaroslav Spacek (2002-03). The defender sits third in the NHL with 24 points, and his eight goals put him in a tie with Cale Makar for the league lead.

Werenski set up a Mathieu Olivier goal that gave Columbus a first-period lead then got a friendly bounce of a Montreal skate for the game-tying tally in the third period. In between he fought with Brendan Gallagher; it was a rare Gordie Howe hat trick for the blueliner who had four PIM over his first 20 outings. The two-point night extended the defenseman's point streak to six games, during which Werenski has four goals and eight assists. Overall, he has a team-high 22 points along with 79 shots, five hits and 33 blocks.

He's added a plus-4 rating, 76 shots on net and 32 blocked shots. He just has to keep the injury bug at bay -- doing so will likely result in him resetting his career high in points for the second year in a row, with 57 being the mark to beat.
