  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Looks good in return to throwing

San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that "the early returns are really good" after Purdy (elbow) resumed throwing this week, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Trey Lance and Sam Darnold will likely take most of the practice reps this spring and possibly into training camp, but both Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have suggested Purdy is the favorite to top the depth chart once healthy, with Lynch referring to the Iowa State product as the "leader in the clubhouse" on two occasions. Coming back from offseason UCL surgery, Purdy reportedly is a bit ahead of schedule and could be ready in time for Week 1 of his second NFL season.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Will start throwing next week

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Purdy (elbow) will start a throwing program next week, NFL Network's Taylor Bisciotti reports. It's all part of Purdy's 12-week plan, and he remains on track to be ready for Week 1 after tearing his UCL in a playoff loss to the Eagles back in January. Trey Lance has been handling all of the first-team reps at OTAs this week, but Sam Darnold is expected to start mixing into the equation at some point this offseason. Purdy remains the favorite to open the year as San Francisco's starter.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Expected back for training camp

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he expects that Purdy (elbow) will be ready for training camp, barring any setbacks, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Shanahan further noted that Purdy has been making throwing motions with a towel and is expected to be able to throw a ball in June. Assuming Purdy continues to progress as expected, he'll be the favorite to lead the dynamic 49ers offense to begin the 2023 campaign after an impressive rookie season. That would leave Trey Lance in an uncertain situation, particularly because the team has acknowledged receiving trade calls regarding him this offseason.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Out of elbow brace

Purdy is no longer wearing a brace over his surgically-repaired right elbow, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports. GM John Lynch discussed the 49ers' QB situation Monday, noting that Purdy is "definitely on schedule, hitting all the checkpoints," while Trey Lance isn't actively being shopped but has been mentioned in trade talks "on a couple occasions." Purdy is six weeks removed from UCL surgery and won't be available for offseason practices, with Lynch saying he'll have a better idea about the second-year QB's rehab timeline 12 weeks out from surgery. Lynch said in late March that he expected Purdy to be ready early in the regular season, possibly by Week 1, adding that Purdy is "probably the leader in the clubhouse" to start once he's healthy. A strong offseason and training camp from Lance or free-agent addition Sam Darnold might change that, especially if Purdy is slow to come back from surgery.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Timeline for return TBD

Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged Tuesday that there is not yet a precise timeline for Purdy's return following the quarterback's March 10 procedure to repair his right elbow, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports. With that in mind, Shanahan indicated that the 49ers should have a better idea of where Purdy stands in his recovery once he's about 12 weeks removed from surgery, noting Tuesday "we'll see at three months if he'll be ready for camp, or if not, then perhaps we say it's gonna go slow. It might be Week 1 and, at the latest, Week 4. It's just all estimations, and we'll see what happens." As long as Purdy is sidelined or limited, 2021 first-rounder Trey Lance (ankle) and free-agent addition Sam Darnold will have an opportunity to log added practice reps, but Nick Wagoner of ESPN relayed Monday that Purdy is viewed as the current front-runner to be the team's starting signal-caller when healthy -- at least according to GM John Lynch.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Undergoes elbow procedure

Purdy underwent surgery on his right elbow Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Per the report, the procedure entailed ulnar collateral ligament repair in the QB's throwing elbow with an internal brace, with the expectation being that Purdy can resume throwing in about three months. Beyond that, it remains to be seen when the 23-year-old signal-caller can resume practicing fully and his status for the start of the coming NFL season has yet to be determined. In Purdy's looming absence, 2021 first-rounder Trey Lance -- who is bouncing back from an ankle injury that derailed his 2022 campaign -- is in line to work with the 49ers' first-team offense once on-field activities resume.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Surgery scheduled this week

Purdy (elbow) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Purdy's initially scheduled elbow procedure had to be postponed due to swelling two weeks ago, but the torn UCL in his right throwing elbow now is set to be addressed Friday. After completing his surgery, Purdy will be able to begin the preliminary steps of what projects to be a lengthy recovery. There's an amount of uncertainty surrounding the 49ers' quarterback room, as Trey Lance (ankle) is recovering from a fractured fibula and ligament disruption in his right ankle suffered Week 2. Lance, however, is expected to be 100 percent for OTAs, meaning Purdy could have to play catch-up.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Hopes to have surgery next week

Purdy (elbow) will meet with his surgeon later this week and hopes to undergo surgery next week, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. Purdy was originally scheduled to undergo surgery for his torn UCL on February 22, but he has continued to experience swelling in the elbow since injuring it in the 49ers' playoff loss to the Eagles. Purdy will have a lengthy rehab once he does go under the knife, and Trey Lance (ankle) is also recovering from a lost 2022 campaign, so the team could dabble in the free-agent market at quarterback this offseason.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Surgery delayed

Purdy (elbow) will have his planned surgery date delayed from Feb. 22 until early March due to continued swelling, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Purdy made an appearance on KNBR San Francisco earlier in the month and detailed his plan to meet with with Dr. Keith Meister on the day before his surgery to get clearance for "a hybrid surgery" that would include a reconstruction. The most optimistic timetable for his recovery is for him to resume throwing after three months, so the delayed timeline would see that date pushed back to early June. Trey Lance (ankle) is expected to be healthy in time for the offseason program, so Purdy will be playing even a little more catch-up now once his health is back up to par.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Surgery scheduled

Purdy is slated to meet with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on Feb. 21 before undergoing surgery to repair the complete tear of the UCL is his right throwing elbow on Feb. 22, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Purdy suffered the injury during the 49ers' loss in the NFC Championship Game at Philadelphia on Jan. 29. The Niners had some concern that he may require Tommy John surgery, but considering he's expected to be ready for training camp, per Rapoport, Purdy appears set to undergo the InternalBrace repair. San Francisco enters the offseason with just two quarterbacks under contract -- Purdy and Trey Lance (ankle) -- with the latter expected to be healthy for the offseason program. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has yet to name a starter or commit to a favorite in the competition for San Francisco's quarterback duties in 2023, but Purdy at least will be given a chance to reclaim the gig after his impressive run as the starter for the team as a seventh-round rookie this past season.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: No decision yet on surgery

San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that Purdy continues to receive opinions on how to proceed with the complete tear of the UCL that he sustained in his right elbow during Sunday's NFC Championship Game loss in Philadelphia, but the most likely scenario is surgery followed by a six-month recovery, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Lynch specifically mentioned the InternalBrace repair, and head coach Kyle Shanahan added Purdy's right throwing arm should return to full strength in time for training camp, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Shanahan also told Lombardi that the 49ers are comfortable with Trey Lance and Purdy as the team's top two quarterbacks for 2023. Considering Lance's right ankle and fibula are expected to be healed well in advance of the offseason program, he may be able to stave off Purdy once late July rolls around. Having said that, Purdy made a case to hold on to the starting gig next season after going 7-1 during his eight-game run with the job to wrap up the most recent campaign.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Tears UCL, set for surgery

Purdy is slated for surgery on his right elbow after suffering a complete tear of his UCL during Sunday's NFC Championship Game loss at Philadelphia, and the 49ers hope he'll be healthy by training camp, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Purdy took a hit from Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick in the first quarter while attempting a pass, which officially was ruled a fumble after review. Afterward, Purdy yielded the offense to Josh Johnson for a good portion of the contest, before the latter suffered a concussion and forced Purdy to be a handoff specialist for the rest of the game due to his inability to complete more than short passes. During his eight-game run as the 49ers' starting quarterback (including playoffs), Purdy completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,667 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions while adding two more scores on the ground. With Jimmy Garoppolo heading for free agency and 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance likely to be healthy for the 49ers' offseason program, Purdy may be behind the eight ball to retain the No. 1 QB gig in San Francisco to begin next season.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Suffers elbow injury in loss

Purdy (elbow) suffered an injury to his right elbow early in Sunday's 31-7 NFC Championship Game loss to the Eagles, resulting in four completed passes for 23 yards and one fumble lost. Purdy technically finished the contest, but only for show after backup Josh Johnson (concussion) was knocked out of the game in the second half. The 23-year-old attempted just two short pass attempts in the second half, as it was apparent that he couldn't throw the ball with his damaged elbow. Purdy will undergo tests Monday to determine the severity of the injury, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, but the initial belief is that the rookie signal-caller sustained a UCL injury that could require a recovery of at least six weeks, and longer than that if surgery is deemed necessary. Purdy surpassed any expectations anyone had for him this season, finishing with a 7-1 record as a starter with 16 passing touchdowns to three interceptions. If healthy, Purdy could be the leading candidate to start for the 49ers in 2023, though 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance (ankle) should at least get the chance to compete with Purdy for the top spot on the depth chart.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Likely out at least six weeks

Purdy (elbow) is believed to have injured his ulnar collateral ligament in Sunday's 31-7 NFC Championship Game loss to the Eagles and will have an MRI on the injury Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports. Purdy came back into the game after backup Josh Johnson was knocked out by a concussion, but San Francisco's playbook was limited predominantly to runs and screens. The rookie quarterback ultimately completed all four of his pass attempts for 23 yards. If the UCL isn't ruptured, Purdy would likely face a six-week recovery. Otherwise, his recovery timetable could be even lengthier.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Back in Sunday's game

Purdy, who had been forced out of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles with a right elbow injury, subsequently returned to the contest. Purdy retook the field after replacement Josh Johnson suffered a concussion that will keep the latter sidelined for the rest of the game. It remains to be seen how much Purdy's elbow issue will affect his ability to throw, but he's now the only QB the 49ers have available Sunday.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Exits Sunday's game

Purdy was forced out of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles with a right elbow injury. Prior to his exit, Purdy had completed both of his passing attempts for 19 yards. In his absence, Josh Johnson is handling the 49ers' QB reps.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: No touchdowns as team advances

Purdy completed 19 of 29 pass attempts for 214 yards, no touchdowns and no turnovers in Sunday's 19-12 divisional-round win over the Cowboys. Purdy was finally held in check by an opposing defense, but he continued his improbable run with the 49ers. The rookie signal-caller filled the role of game manager that many had ascribed to him prior to his breakout play. The lack of touchdowns hurt his fantasy numbers, but some sort of regression was to be expected given the quality of opponent in a playoff matchup. Purdy will lead a group of incredibly talented playmakers on the road to face another tough NFC East defense in Philadelphia next Sunday.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Dazzles in season finale

Purdy completed 15 of 20 pass attempts for 178 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 38-13 rout of the Cardinals. Purdy capped off an impressive rookie season with the first three-touchdown game of his career. The last pick from this year's draft continues to excel in the red zone, finding his star players Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle (twice) for scores. Purdy finishes the regular season undefeated as a starter with a completion rate of 67 percent, 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. The 22-year-old will attempt to keep this Hollywood script going as he leads a talented group of position players into the playoffs, starting with a home tilt in the wild-card round next week.

  • 49ers' Brock Purdy: Sleepers (Start/Sit)

I'll stick with Purdy again in Week 18 against the Cardinals, and this is a big game for San Francisco. The 49ers can get the No. 1 seed in the NFC with a victory against Arizona and an Eagles loss to the Giants, so San Francisco has plenty of motivation for this game. Purdy has scored at least 20 Fantasy points in three of four starts, and his worst outing was 19 points against Washington in Week 16. No quarterback has scored more than 13 Fantasy points against Arizona in the past four games, but for the season the Cardinals allow 19.0 Fantasy points per game to the position. And Jimmy Garoppolo had 33 Fantasy points against Arizona in Week 12.
