  • Eagles' Rashaad Penny: Sharing backfield with Swift now

The Eagles traded for D'Andre Swift on Saturday to join Penny in their new-look backfield, NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro reports. The Eagles gave up a 2025 fourth-rounder and a 2023 seventh-round pick swap (No. 219 for No. 249) in exchange for Swift, who missed either three or four games each year with the Lions and has one season remaining on his rookie contract. Penny's career also has been massively impacted by injuries, which is why the Eagles got away with paying only $1.35 million (on a one-year contract) for a 2018 first-round pick with a career average of 5.7 YPC. Penny typically has missed large chunks of time -- including last season after he suffered a fibula fracture Week 5 -- whereas Swift has dealt with less serious, nagging injuries that have sometimes impacted his workloads even when active. The two should complement each other well for however long they're both healthy, with Penny relying on size, speed and power while Swift gets it done with agility and receiving. In fact, Swift caught at least 46 passes each season in Detroit, nearly double Penny's career total of 27 receptions in 42 games. There's room for both to have fantasy value in a prolific offense like Philadelphia's, though QB Jalen Hurts took 48.8 percent of the inside-the-five carries last season even while missing two games. Penny should be a participant in OTAs this May, having declared himself fully healthy shortly after he signed in mid-March.

  • Eagles' Rashaad Penny: Declares self healthy

Penny (leg) told reporters at his introductory press conference that he's fully recovered from a fractured fibula and will be ready for spring practices, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. While his ability to stay healthy remains a concern, the Eagles' new running back seems to be doing well at the moment and profiles as the new lead runner for a high-powered offense that just lost Miles Sanders to the Panthers. The Eagles also have Kenneth Gainwell and re-signed Boston Scott, both of whom are solid options on passing downs but neither of whom is in Penny's league as a pure runner. The team could still add more backfield talent via the draft or free agency, but it probably won't be a pricey signing or early pick, leaving Penny as a strong favorite for the Week 1 start and lead role. The 27-year-old has a career mark of 5.7 yards per carry and should get better blocking in Philadelphia than he ever did in Seattle, running behind an O-line with four standouts in LT Jordan Mailata, LG Landon Dickerson, C Jason Kelce and RT Lane Johnson.

  • Eagles' Rashaad Penny: Moving on to Philly

The Eagles and Penny (lower leg) agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Since the Seahawks made Penny a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he's been beset by injuries, seeing action in just 42 of 82 possible games across five seasons. What he's been able to do when available is significant, as he's averaged 5.7 YPC and reeled off 24 runs of 20-plus yards among his 337 career rushes. With Miles Sanders and Boston Scott currently unrestricted free agents, Philadelphia appears poised to roll with the backfield combo of Penny and Kenneth Gainwell in the upcoming campaign, setting Penny up for success behind one of the NFL's top offensive lines. First though, he will need to complete his recovery from the broken left fibula and high-ankle sprain that ended his 2022 season after only five contests.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Still rehabbing, per Carroll

Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (ankle) has yet to start running and remains in the midst of his rehab from a broken left fibula and high-ankle sprain, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports. Penny suffered the injuries back in Week 5 and underwent surgery to repair the fracture Oct. 12, getting a four-month recovery timetable at the time. That may have inched up, if only for a day, after he told Ian Furness of 93.3 KJR Seattle on Sunday that he may be able to suit up in the playoffs if the Seahawks play beyond Week 18. The comment comes in the wake of Travis Homer (knee) sitting out Week 13 with an illness and Kenneth Walker (ankle) and DeeJay Dallas (ankle) picking up health concerns in Sunday's 27-23 win at the Rams. With such a banged-up backfield, the situation could be such in mid-January that Penny has a chance to return, even it's premature.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Could return for playoffs

Penny (ankle/fibula) said Sunday that there's a "decent chance" he could return if the Seahawks make the playoffs, Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13 Seattle reports. Penny underwent surgery to repair his left ankle and fractured fibula in October and has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, but he's apparently made good progress in his recovery and is in the mix for a return during the playoffs. Kenneth Walker sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's win over the Rams, and the severity of the issue isn't yet known. Regardless of Walker's status down the stretch, Penny's potential availability for the playoffs would provide Seattle's backfield with a fresh set of legs during the postseason. The 26-year-old logged 57 carries for 346 yards and two touchdowns while securing four of five targets for 16 yards over five appearances prior to sustaining his injury.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Shuttled to IR

Seattle placed Penny (ankle/fibula) on injured reserve Friday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. Penny's move to IR was merely a formality after he underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair his left ankle and fractured fibula. The transaction opens up a spot on the 53-man roster, but it's unclear if Seattle plans to use it on another running back. Seattle already claimed Tony Jones off waivers from New Orleans earlier this week to add depth behind rookie Kenneth Walker, who is expected to step into a lead role out of the backfield beginning with Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Will undergo surgery Tuesday

Penny will undergo season-ending surgery on his fractured fibula Tuesday and faces a four-month recovery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Penny suffered the injury during the team's Week 5 loss to the Saints and will miss the remainder of the 2022 campaign. However, per Rapoport, an MRI on Monday revealed that his ankle was relatively clean, so he should make a full recovery. Penny, who signed a one-year deal to return to Seattle this offseason, will be a free agent in March and, barring his return to health, could be one of the more sought-after players during the 2023 offseason. In the meantime, Kenneth Walker, a rookie second-round pick, is expected to take over as Seattle's primary running back while DeeJay Dallas handles his usual third-down role.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Out for year

Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (lower leg) is done for the season due to a broken fibula and a high-ankle sprain, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. Penny will require season-ending surgery, an outcome which Carroll correctly diagnosed as "a heartbreaking loss for him." The 2018 first-round pick had averaged an outstanding 6.1 yards per carry through the first five weeks of the season, building off his 6.3 YPC mark from 2021. That had Penny well on track to enter free agency in 2023 with plenty of leverage. Instead, he now will have to do so while rehabbing from a serious injury. In the immediate future, rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker is primed to take over Seattle's lead back duties, with DeeJay Dallas stepping into the No. 2 role.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Injury considered severe

Coach Pete Carroll said Penny sustained a "serious" injury to his lower left leg during Sunday's loss at New Orleans and may be out awhile, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. Penny left the contest during the Seahawks' first drive after halftime and needed a cart to get to the locker room. According to Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, Penny was seen with a walking boot on his left foot and on crutches in the locker room afterward. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network provided more insight into the injury, calling it a broken tibia, and Penny will undergo more tests to determine the extent of the damage. Penny likely is in store for a lengthy absence, which would allow rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker to take on a majority share of the touches among Seahawks running backs with Travis Homer (ribs) already on injured reserve. DeeJay Dallas is the other healthy running back on the team's active roster.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Hurts left ankle Sunday

Penny suffered a left ankle injury during Sunday's game in New Orleans, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. Penny picked up the health concern on a carry during Seattle's first possession of the second half and needed a cart to get to the locker room. If he's unable to reenter the contest, he'll come out of Week 5 with eight rushes for 54 yards. Rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker and DeeJay Dallas are the remaining healthy running backs on the active roster.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Injures left leg Sunday

Penny was carted to the locker room during Sunday's game at New Orleans due to an injury to his lower left leg, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. Penny was examined by the Seahawks' training staff on the team's first drive of the second half before the decision was made to take him to the locker room. If he's unable to return, he'll finish Week 5 with eight carries for 54 yards.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Bust Alert (Start/Sit)

I had Penny as a sleeper here last week, and he delivered his best game of the season against the Lions with 17 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns, along with one catch for 6 yards. He's clearly the No. 1 running back for Seattle ahead of Kenneth Walker III, but that doesn't mean Penny is a must-start Fantasy option in all leagues. Prior to facing the Lions, who are terrible defensively, Penny combined for 16 PPR points in his first three games. The Saints have allowed one rushing touchdown and two touchdowns combined to running backs all year. It wouldn't be a shock to see Penny's production plummet in a tougher matchup this week on the road.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Practices in full Thursday

Penny (shoulder) was a full practice participant Thursday, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports. After taking a season-high 18 touches for 157 total yards and two rushing TDs this past Sunday at Detroit, Penny showed up to a media session with his shoulders heavily wrapped. He then kicked off Week 5 prep with a DNP, only to return Thursday with a cap on his reps. Penny thus received a maintenance day Wednesday, while rookie Kenneth Walker was added to the injury report Thursday as limited with a shoulder issue of his own. There's no telling if Walker is in danger of sitting out Sunday at New Orleans, but Penny himself is poised to lead the Seahawks backfield again this weekend.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Back at practice Thursday

Penny (shoulder) returned to practice Thursday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. Penny's shoulder was heavily wrapped during media availability after the Seahawks' Week 4 win at Detroit, in which he turned a season-high 18 touches into 157 yards from scrimmage and two rushing touchdowns. He then proceeded to sit out Wednesday's practice, but that presumably was for maintenance-related reasons. Thursday's injury report will reveal whether or not Penny was limited or full as he got back on the field.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Start Him (Lineup Decisions)

The matchup against New Orleans is a tough one for Penny. They've been pretty good against rival running backs, but Penny's upside pushes him into the top-20 among runners. He should have a safe floor of 80 total yards. I'd rather start Jeff Wilson and Damien Harris given their matchups, but Penny is still worth starting over James Conner, Kareem Hunt and the Rams running backs.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Tending to shoulder issue

Penny was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice due to a shoulder injury, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. On the heels of his 151-yard, two-touchdown performance in a Week 4 win at Detroit, Penny had his shoulders heavily wrapped when he met with the media, according to Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. At the outset of practice Wednesday, Penny was spotted on the side during warmups, per Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, and he apparently didn't take any reps during the closed portion of practice either. As a result, Penny's status will be one to monitor Thursday and Friday to get a sense of his potential to play Sunday in New Orleans. Rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker and DeeJay Dallas are the next running backs behind Penny on the team's depth chart.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Blasts through century mark in win

Penny rushed 17 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns and brought in his only target for six yards in the Seahawks' 48-45 win over the Lions on Sunday. Penny kept up his strong start to the season with his first 100-yard game of the campaign, getting past the mark largely on the back of 36- and 41-yard touchdown runs in the second half that helped seal the wild win for Seattle. The latter scamper came at an especially critical time, transpiring with 2:14 remaining after the Lions had closed to within three points. Penny's pair of trips to the end zone were also his first of the season, and he'll take an impressive 6.0 yards per carry figure into a tough Week 5 road matchup against the Saints' talented defensive front.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Sleepers (Start/Sit)

The Seahawks are giving too many running backs playing time as Penny, Ken Walker, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas all played in Week 3 against Atlanta. Penny still led the team in carries with 14, and he finished with 66 yards. He has a limited role in the passing game with three catches for 10 yards on the season on four targets, which is a concern. And if he doesn't score then his stat line could be minimal. But the Lions have already allowed six rushing touchdowns to running backs this year, and Penny could be a top-20 running back in all leagues if he gets into the end zone for the first time this season.

  • Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Start Him (Lineup Decisions)

The Seahawks offensive line isn't perfect, and Penny isn't promised every single carry, but it's the kind of matchup Penny has thrived on in the past. This might even be the week the Seahawks opt to run more; they're currently passing at the seventh-highest rate in the league. I'd trust Penny over Ezekiel Elliott, Breece Hall, Dameon Pierce and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
