A 2017 fifth-round pick by Atlanta, Hill signed with the 49ers this offseason after playing for the St. Louis Battlehawks during the 2023 XFL season. The veteran running back was promoted to the 49ers' active roster three times during the 2021 campaign, but he played exclusively on special teams.

Hill was sitting at No. 6 on the 49ers' running back depth chart, which makes this move relatively unsurprising. The 27-year-old has primarily played in Atlanta across the first four years of his career, but he was looking for a fresh start in San Francisco. It remains to be seen if the team plans on offering him a role on their practice squad.

49ers' Brian Hill: Signs with San Francisco
Hill signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Monday.
Hill most recently played with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL, where he tallied 416 yards on 88 carries to go along with 204 yards and one touchdown on 24 receptions. Prior to that, he had stints with the Falcons, Titans and Browns. The journeyman will now attempt to carve a role out for himself with the 49ers.

Hill was waived from San Francisco's active roster over the weekend but will return to the organization via the practice squad. He'll provide depth at running back with Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty now healthy.

Hill signed with the 49ers' practice squad Wednesday.
Hill was cut from the Browns' practice squad on Nov. 30 after never seeing the field for them. With Trenton Cannon (concussion), Elijah Mitchell (knee/concussion) and Jeff Wilson (knee) all considered questionable going into Sunday against the Bengals, the 49ers find themselves potentially very thin at running back. Last season with Atlanta, Hill had 100 carries for 465 yards and a touchdown, with 25 receptions for 199 yards while appearing in all 16 games.

Dalvin Cook has a dislocated shoulder that's expected to sideline him for the next two games, though the starting running back has yet to be ruled out from Sunday's game against the Lions.
