Seahawks' Branden Jackson: Injury may be long-term
Coach Pete Carroll said that Jackson (head) was placed on IR on Sunday due to a spinal condition, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Carroll noted that Jackson's condition "makes it possibly dangerous" to play long-term. He suffered the injury during a mock game Aug. 23, the severity of which required him to be transported to a hospital.

Jackson suffered a brutal head injury that sent him to the hospital during a mock game Aug. 23. He'll be able to play again this year if he reaches an injury settlement with the Seahawks, but his primary focus is getting healthy.

Jackson was carted off the field during Saturday's mock game with an apparent head injury, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Jackson was injured during a mock game Saturday, and head coach Pete Carroll described the injury as "a knockout punch" when Jackson collided with Cedric Ogbuehi and was "momentarily unconscious." The 28-year-old defensive end was taken to the hospital. There should be further information on Jackson's injury in the upcoming days.

Jackson enjoyed an increase in snaps in 2019 in part due to merit, but also because Jadeveon Clowney (core) and Ezekiel Ansah (neck) battled injuries. The 27-year-old even started three games, but he also a healthy scratch once. Jackson will be an unrestricted free agent in March if he isn't re-signed by the Seahawks. If the Texas Tech product sticks with the team, however, he'll compete with Rasheem Green -- who is three years younger and a better pass rusher -- and possibly Nazair Jones (knee) for a starting role.

Jackson had increased responsibility since the Seahawks' defensive line was battling injuries in the form of DT Poona Ford (calf) and DE Ezekiel Ansah (shoulder). He performed well, recording the team's only sack while playing 37 of 57 defensive snaps (65 percent). His chances will likely be limited once Ansah returns, which could be Week 3 versus the Saints.

Jackson played in a rotational role on the defensive line on and off throughout the 2018 season, with his highest snap count (40) coming Week 13 against the 49ers. In the end, he totaled 10 tackles (nine solo) and a sack across nine games. He'll look to cement himself as a depth option once again in 2019.

Jackson's promotion is no surprise as the Seahawks defensive line was looking extraordinarily thin with Cliff Avril (neck) and Quinton Jefferson (hand) both looking at prolonged absences. The 24-year-old takes the roster spot of linebacker Justin March-Lillard, and will likely play a similar role to Marcus Smith as a rotational defensive end.
