The 28-year-old was recently designated for assignment but will stick in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Hamilton spent a couple weeks with the big club and went 0-for-5 with a walk.

Hamilton was designated for assignment Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
The move is being made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man and 26-man rosters for the signing of Jorge Alfaro. Hamilton was up with the Red Sox for a couple weeks but hardly saw the field, going hitless in six plate appearances.

The Red Sox will select Hamilton's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
With Reese McGuire (oblique) almost certainly headed for the injured list, Hamilton will join the Red Sox to serve as the backup catcher behind Connor Wong. Hamilton has a little bit of MLB experience, having logged one hit in 18 at-bats last season with the Twins. He is currently slashing .173/.281/.306 with 13 RBI across 114 plate appearances in the minors.

The 28-year-old catcher slashed .180/.284/.310 in 30 games at Triple-A. Hamilton should serve as Connor Wong's backup while Reese McGuire is on the injured list with an oblique strain.

Hamilton had a solid season in Triple-A last year, slashing .238/.371/.447 with 42 RBI through 251 plate appearances, and has also got a cup of coffee with the Twins. If Hamilton proves he can maintain a similar level of output with Triple-A Worcester, he'll likely return to the majors at some point this year.

The 27-year-old will receive his first taste of the big leagues with starting catcher Ryan Jeffers (thumb) placed on the injured list. Hamilton has a .258/.392/.497 slash line with 10 home runs and 35 RBI for Triple-A St. Paul this year, and he should serve as Minnesota's backup catcher as Gary Sanchez takes over primary duties behind the plate.
