The righty has been with Triple-A Round Rock since June 19 but now loses his 40-man roster spot, which Sam Huff filled in a corresponding move. Phillips (elbow) returned from the 7-day injured list Saturday at Double-A Frisco and gave up two runs on one hit and one walk while recording one out in his relief appearance against Northwest Arkansas.
Phillips was back in action after a right elbow injury had sidelined him for a little over two weeks. The 23-year-old now maintains a 2.51 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 14.1 innings through his five outings (four starts) with Frisco this season.

Rangers' Tyler Phillips: Likely to open at Frisco
Phillips is expected to start the 2020 season at Double-A Frisco, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
A 16th-round pick in 2015, Phillips has been been a workhorse in the system, averaging 120 innings and 21 starts over the last three seasons. He finished up 2019 at Frisco, surviving a rocky start to go 6-3 with a 2.95 ERA over his final 10 starts for the RoughRiders. He needs to locate his pitches, because Phillips isn't blowing anyone away with a low-wattage fastball. His best pitch is a changeup, but he added a sharper breaking ball last year, which could move him from fringy prospect to viable back-end starter in the majors.

Rangers' Tyler Phillips: Added to 40-man roster
Phillips was added to the Rangers' 40-man roster Wednesday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
The move protects Phillips from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The 22-year-old has yet to reach the Triple-A level and posted a mediocre 4.73 ERA in 93.1 innings for Double-A Frisco last season.

Rangers' Tyler Phillips: Moving to Double-A
Phillips was promoted to Double-A Frisco on Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Phillips began the season at High-A Down East and posted a fantastic 1.19 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB through six starts. The 21-year-old typically sits in the low 90s with a curveball and changeup, and features a 1.7 BB/9 over his minor-league career. He'll make his first start for the RoughRiders on Tuesday against Corpus Christi.
