Astros manager Joe Espada announced that Abreu will not be available for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. After serving a two-game suspension to start the season, Abreu pitched Saturday and Sunday against the Yankees. He was roughed up in his 2024 debut Saturday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. With Josh Hader also unavailable Monday, the Astros will look to Ryan Pressly, Rafael Montero and Seth Martinez as their main options out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less

Astros' Bryan Abreu: Serves two-game suspension
The Astros activated Abreu from the restricted list Saturday, per MLB's transaction log. Abreu has served his two-game suspension for intentionally throwing at the Rangers' Adolis Garcia in Game 5 of the ALCS in 2023. Abreu will be available for Saturday's game against the Yankees.... Astros' Bryan Abreu: Placed on restricted list
The Astros placed Abreu on the restricted list Thursday. Abreu has to serve a two-game suspension to begin the season after MLB ruled that he intentionally threw at the Rangers' Adolis Garcia in Game 5 of the ALCS. The setup man will be activated ahead of the third game of the four-game set versus the Yankees.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Settles at $1.75 million
The Astros and Abreu avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.75 million contract Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. It's a well-earned raise for Abreu, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The hard-throwing reliever has been dominant for Houston over the last two seasons, posting a 1.84 ERA and 188:57 K:BB across 132.1 innings. If anything happens to closer Ryan Pressly, Abreu would be next in line.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: To serve two-game ban in 2024
MLB announced Monday that Abreu's two-game suspension for throwing at the Rangers' Adolis Garcia in last Friday's Game 5 of the ALCS was upheld following an appeal, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Abreu will serve the suspension for the first two games of the 2024 regular season. The ruling comes as good news for the Astros, as Abreu won't have to miss Monday's Game 7 and will remain eligible to pitch should Houston earn its way to the World Series. Abreu has been the top setup option in front of closer Ryan Pressly in 2023, finishing the regular season with 24 holds and five saves to go with a 1.75 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB across 72 innings.... Astros' Bryan Abreu: Eligible to pitch in Game 6
Abreu (suspension) is appealing his two-game suspension, and he's eligible to pitch in Sunday's contest with the Rangers. Abreu will have his appeal hearing Monday, so he will technically be available to pitch if needed in Game 6 of the ALCS. The right-hander was suspended for two games after he hit Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia in Game 5.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Suspended two games
Abreu was suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount of money for throwing at Adolis Garcia in Game 5 of the ALCS, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu's suspension will begin immediately, which will keep him out for the remainder of the ALCS. However, Abreu will likely appeal the decision, which would allow the 26-year-old reliever to continue pitching until his hearing. Abreu has been a crucial part of Houston's bullpen during its postseason run, surrendering just one run over 6.1 innings while racking up 11 strikeouts.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Notches fifth save
Abreu allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks. Abreu has earned three saves and eight holds with a 34:13 K:BB during his 27.2-inning scoreless streak, which dates back to July 18. This was among his shakier outings in that span, but he was able to get the job done. The setup man has a 1.75 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB with five saves and 24 holds over 72 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Gets four outs Wednesday
Abreu (forearm) struck out one over 1.1 innings Wednesday against the Orioles. He did not allow a hit or a walk in the outing. Abreu was struck on his right forearm by a comebacker in Sunday's game against the Royals, but it seems like he is a healthy bullpen option going forward.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Held out Monday
Abreu wasn't available to pitch during Monday's game against Baltimore after being struck by a line drive in the right forearm during Houston's weekend series with Kansas City, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Manager Dusty Baker noted that Abreu was sent for X-rays earlier in the day and the results came back negative. The team is hopeful the right-hander will be ready to pitch Tuesday, per Adam Spolane of Sports Radio 610 Houston.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Grabs fourth save
Abreu picked up the save Sunday against the Yankees. He allowed a hit and two walks while striking out two over 1.1 scoreless innings. Abreu was tasked with closing out the Astros' victory Sunday with Ryan Pressly unavailable. After relieving Hector Neris in the eighth, the 26-year-old Abreu allowed an inherited run to score before working around a pair of walks in the ninth to earn the four-out save. Overall, Abreu's been solid while setting up Pressly this season -- his ERA is down to 2.39 with a 1.16 WHIP and 79:24 K:BB across 52.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Nabs Opening Day roster spot
Manager Dusty Baker confirmed Sunday that Abreu has made the Astros' Opening Day roster, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Baker said that Abreu and Ronel Blanco secured the final two spots in the Astros' season-opening bullpen after Brandon Bielak and Seth Martinez were optioned to Sugar Land, while non-roster invitees Adam Morgan and Zac Rosscup were informed they wouldn't make the club. Abreu, who owns a 4.69 ERA and 11.3 K-BB% across 42 career big-league appearances, is expected to fill a low-leverage role out of the Houston bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Sent to Triple-A
Abreu was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu struggled mightily in a relief appearance Sunday and allowed seven runs on five hits and a walk while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning against the Rangers. He'll attempt to right the ship in the minors after Brandon Bielak was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Back with big club
The Astros recalled Abreu from Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Houston optioned Abreu to the minors Saturday, but he never reported back to Sugar Land and stuck around with the Astros on their West Coast road trip in case an extra reliever was needed. He'll be eligible to rejoin the Astros just one day later after closer Ryan Pressly was placed on the paternity list Sunday. Expect Abreu to work mostly in low-leverage spots out of the bullpen while he's on the 26-man active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Picks up relief win
Abreu (3-3) allowed one hit and struck out two over two scoreless innings to earn the win over Oakland on Tuesday. Abreu was activated earlier in the day and played a key role in Houston's come-from-behind victory. He and two other relievers shut the door over the final four innings. Houston's bullpen has been unsettled all season, but Abreu has a respectable 3.21 ERA since May 1.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Nears return
Abreu (calf) struck out one and walked one over two-thirds of an inning for Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday and could be activated off the 10-day injured list this week, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu made his fourth appearance while on rehab, and it was the second of back-to-back appearances. Typically, going back-to-back days is the final box to be checked before activation. Houston manager Dusty Backer said a decision would be made in the next few days. Houston has an off-day Monday before hosting the Athletics for three games beginning Tuesday.... See More ... Astros' Bryan Abreu: Makes second rehab appearance
Abreu (leg) struck out one over a perfect inning for Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday. This was Abreu's second rehab outing after he threw 1.2 innings June 29 for the Skeeters. He's one of three Houston relievers working their way back from injury. Enoli Paredes (shoulder) and Joe Smith (elbow) are also on rehab.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Slated to miss extended time
Manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday that Abreu (leg) will be out "a while," Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Abreu suffered his injury while shagging balls during practice Saturday, and he's on crutches as a result. Baker didn't provide a timetable for the right-hander's return, but it appears as though he'll miss more than the minimum 10 days.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Bryan Abreu: Dealing with leg issue
Abreu was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Padres due to a leg injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old apparently suffered the injury while shagging flyballs during batting practice. It's unclear if the issue will affect Abreu's availability for Sunday's series finale.... See More ... Astros' Bryan Abreu: Notches first big-league save
Abreu earned the save against the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless inning and allowing two walks while striking out one. The Astros held a 5-2 lead heading into the ninth frame, but regular closer Ryan Pressly was unable to pitch due to a stiff neck. Houston consequently turned to Abreu, who put a pair of runners on base with walks but rebounded to strike out Albert Pujols and wrap up the first save of his career. It remains to be seen how much additional time, if any, Pressly will miss, and Abreu could be in the mix for additional save chances if the Astros are without their primary closer for future contests....
