  Winans was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett by Atlanta on Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The move comes immediately after Winans was torched for seven runs (six earned) over five innings in a loss to the Mets. Atlanta will need a starter again next week to fill the spot vacated by Spencer Strider (elbow). Bryce Elder, AJ Smith-Shawver, Darius Vines, Dylan Dodd and Hurston Waldrep are candidates to step in.

  Winans (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Mets, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out one. The Mets got to Winans quickly Thursday, scoring three runs in the first two innings before putting up a four spot in the third. Winans would ultimately tough out five innings, though Atlanta couldn't climb out of the early 7-0 hole, leaving the 28-year-old right-hander with the loss. Winans made six starts for Atlanta as a rookie in 2023, going 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB. While he may have a chance to stick in the rotation with Spencer Strider (elbow) presumably out long-term, Atlanta could turn to top prospects AJ Smith-Shawver or Hurston Waldrep if Winans continues to struggle.

  Winans and Atlanta won't play the Mets on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather in the Atlanta area. The two teams will make up the postponed game Sept. 26. Winans had been scheduled to start Wednesday in the rotation spot that previously belonged to Spencer Strider (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend. Winans' start will be moved to Thursday's series finale, pushing each of the team's other four starters back a day.

Winans was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday in a corresponding move for ace Spencer Strider's (elbow) placement on the 15-day injured list, but the expectation was that Winans would be available as a long-relief option for a few days. After going unused Sunday through Tuesday, however, Winans will ultimately take Strider's spot in the rotation, at least for now. Though 2023 All-Star Bryce Elder -- who is currently with Gwinnett -- seems to be a more likely candidate to serve as a longer-term replacement during Strider's stay on the IL, Winans will get the first chance to prove he belongs in the big-league rotation. The 28-year-old previously made six starts for Atlanta as a rookie in 2023, logging a 5.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB over 32.1 innings.

Though he had been a member of Gwinnett's season-opening rotation and will now move up to Atlanta as a replacement on the 26-man active roster for staff ace Spencer Strider (elbow), Winans is expected to provide the big club with a fresh arm in the bullpen who's capable of covering multiple innings. AJ Smith-Shawver, Dylan Dodd, Darius Vines and Huascar Ynoa are all already on the 40-man roster and could be candidates to enter the rotation when Atlanta next needs a fifth starter Wednesday versus the Mets, while Bryce Elder pitched four innings for Gwinnett on Saturday and likely won't be in consideration to replace Strider right away since he would be pitching on only three days' rest.

Max Fried (finger) and Charlie Morton (finger) are closing the regular season on the injured list, so Atlanta will at least temporarily have room in the rotation for Winans. In his return to the big leagues last weekend for a doubleheader in Washington, Winans took a loss in the opener of the twin bill while striking out six and giving up two earned runs over five innings. Through five starts with the big club this season, Winans owns a 1-2 record to go with a 4.33 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.

  The Braves have struggled to fill the final spot in their rotation basically from the jump, but they may have finally settled on Winans, a 28-year-old of basically no prospect stature who has nonetheless performed with every opportunity he's gotten this season. When last we saw him, he was striking out nine Mets over seven shutout innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader Aug. 12, and he's been pitching that way at Triple-A Gwinnett all year, putting together a 2.79 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8.0 K/9. None of his four pitches is particularly impressive, with his fastball barely averaging 90 mph, but he mixes them well and generally keeps the ball on the ground, limiting damage. Nobody's expecting him to be the staff ace, but if he can gut out six innings at a time, the Braves offense can take care of the rest. He's expected to rejoin the rotation Monday and lines up for two starts right away.

• Braves' Allan Winans: Dazzles in first MLB win

  Winans (1-0) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets, allowing four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine. Making his second career start in the majors, Winans showed some nerves in the first inning by loading the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but he escaped the jam and went on to dominate the team that let him go in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 draft after the 2021 season. Getting massive run support -- Atlanta wound up winning the contest 21-3 -- couldn't have hurt his confidence, either. The right-hander fired 80 of his 111 pitches for strikes, generating an incredible 39 called or swinging strikes along the way despite a fastball that topped out at 90.9 mph. With Yonny Chirinos struggling as the No. 5 starter, Atlanta could have a tough decision to make the next time that spot in the rotation comes around, which figures to be next weekend at home against the Giants.

  Winans will be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday to start against the Brewers, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Winans has been rather impressive this season in Triple-A, putting up a 2.81 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 102.2 innings across 18 appearances (13 starts). With Max Fried (forearm) slated to return within a week or so, it's unlikely Winans makes many more starts with Atlanta past Saturday. However, he will be facing a Brewers offense that ranks last in the NL with a .687 OPS.
