Abreu broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with the home run, but the Red Sox were unable to build off it. It was the fourth consecutive game that an Abreu hit gave Boston a lead. The outfielder, who has reached base safely in 11 straight games, is batting .361 (13-for-36) with seven extra-base hits and seven walks during his on-base streak. This was the second straight game at cleanup for Abreu, who is needed to help replace the production lost when the team placed Triston Casas (fractured rib) on the IL.

He has a history of high-volume attempted steals in the minors, so this flurry is not out of character. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated earlier in the week that Abreu will be in the lineup against right-handers for the time being, which puts him on the fantasy radar. Abreu is making just his seventh start of the season Monday, but he has been in the lineup for four of the last five contests versus righties and it sounds like he'll be a regular against them moving forward. Ceddanne Rafaela is getting a start at shortstop Monday and it would appear he'll see more action there moving forward. Abreu has just a .618 OPS this season but put up an .862 OPS in 28 games in 2023.

Ceddanne Rafaela has made the team and seems to have played himself into a regular role, while Abreu has struggled to a .588 OPS and 24 strikeouts in 24 games this spring. Tyler O'Neill has not played right field in the majors since 2019, but the Red Sox could move him there at Abreu's expense, or perhaps Jarren Duran could move to right. While the 24-year-old Abreu showed promise in a small sample in the majors last season, the whiffs might push him to a bench role or back to the minors to begin 2024.
