Smith-Njigba claimed the fourth outfielder role in Pittsburgh with a .340 batting average and 1.011 OPS through 47 at-bats of Grapefruit League play. The Pirates announced Wednesday that Smith-Njigba (wrist) has been cleared for full baseball activities, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Smith-Njigba looks like he'll be ready to go for spring training despite missing the final three and a half months of the 2022 season with a fractured right wrist. The 23-year-old suffered the injury after appearing in just three games for the Pirates following his call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates plan to recall Smith-Njigba from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Monday's game in St. Louis, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Smith, Miguel Yajure, Roansy Contreras and Maikol Escotto were traded from the Yankees to the Pirates in exchange for Jameson Taillon (elbow) on Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Smith didn't play during the shortened season in 2020 and will now continue his career with the Pirates.
