McCormick is competing for the Astros' starting center field job this spring, manager Dusty Baker told Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle on Friday.
McCormick enters camp as the odds-on favorite after starting 12 of 13 postseason games in center field in 2022 during the Astros' run to the World Series title. However, Baker noted that Jake Meyers would also be in the running after an injury-plagued 2022 and that "there's room for everybody to play." McCormick went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk during Saturday's 5-0 win over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS.
McCormick snuck a Gerrit Cole fastball just over the wall in right field to give the Astros a 2-0 lead during the second inning. He continues to be a solid source of production for the bottom of the Houston lineup, and all five runs in Game 3 were knocked in by the bottom three hitters of the order. McCormick took Clarke Schmidt deep for a solo shot just two batters after his teammate Yuli Gurriel, knocking the reliever from the game and giving the Astros a critical 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.
