Player Outlook
Bailey Falter was flipped from Philadelphia at the trade deadline in 2023, though his role, workload and skill all remained nearly identical before and after the trade. He threw a total of 80.2 uninspiring innings in the majors, as he saw his velocity dip to the lowest mark of his career (90.9), with a corresponding dip in swinging strike rate (7.9 percent) and strikeout rate (17.3 percent). Even on a team with a relatively uninspiring group of starters, it's unlikely that Falter will be able to earn anything more than spot starts and a bullpen role. Though he's not a closer of the future, Falter has had more success in relief in his career, holding opponents to a .303 wOBA with 52 strikeouts across 56.2 innings. He could turn into a relatively successful multi-inning reliever, though the fantasy value of that in most league formats is minimal.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Settles down for seventh win

Falter (7-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings against the Nationals. He struck out three. Falter's outing did not begin well as he allowed three runs in the first, capped by a two-run homer by Andres Chaparro. Falter then settled down, allowing no more runs through his final four innings while the anemic Pirates' offense scored six to put him in position for his seventh win. Falter progressively improved throughout his start, retiring the Nationals in order for the first time in the fifth to close out his outing on a high note. Despite setting a new career-high with his seventh win, the nine batters to reach base marked the fifth straight start Falter has allowed at least eight baserunners while pitching fewer than six innings, holding a 6.85 ERA and 1.82 WHIP during that stretch. His next start is currently slated to take place in Pittsburgh against the Marlins.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Stumbles in no-decision

Falter did not factor into the decision in Friday's 10-8 loss to Cleveland, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings. He struck out two. The 27-year-old struggled out the gate, allowing a two-RBI double to Josh Naylor in the first inning to open the game's scoring. After allowing two more runs in the fourth inning, Pirates manager Derek Shelton had seen enough and didn't allow Falter out for the fifth, even though he'd tossed only 59 pitches. The Pittsburgh southpaw has pitched to 4.41 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 81:34 K:BB across 116.1 innings in 23 starts this season. He currently lines up to make his next outing at home against the Nationals.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Allows five runs in no-decision

Falter did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 win against the Reds, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings. Falter yielded nine hard-hit balls while generating just six swinging strikes on 79 pitches. The southpaw has not lost any of his six outings since returning from the injured list, but he also hasn't logged a quality start in that span. On the season, he owns a 4.25 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 79:33 K:BB across 112.1 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Guardians next week.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Ends up with no-decision Sunday

Falter did not factor into the decision in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. He allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while recording two strikeouts over four innings. All four runs against Falter were put up in the first two innings with the Dodgers plating a pair with two outs in the first and second. Falter was able to hold things scoreless over the next two frames, but his day was done after he needed 93 pitches to get through four. Sunday was only the third time this season he's walked three or more batters, and he's now struck out fewer than five batters in in six of his last seven starts while posting just one quality start over that span. For the year, Falter owns a 4.07 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 67:31 K:BB in 101.2 innings. He lines up to face the Mariners over the weekend his next time on the mound.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Goes two innings before rain delay

Falter didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Padres, allowing two hits while striking out one over two scoreless innings. Falter allowed just a pair of singles Tuesday before the game entered a nearly three-hour rain delay, which forced Pittsburgh to turn to the bullpen to start the third inning. Falter's been serviceable for the Pirates this year, going 5-7 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 65:28 K:BB across 19 starts (97.2 innings). The left-hander is currently slated to make his next start this weekend on the road against the Dodgers.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Returns from injured list

The Pirates activated Falter (triceps) from the 15-day injured list Monday. While the Pirates haven't yet announced their plans for Tuesday's game in Houston, Falter should be lined up to start if he isn't needed out of the bullpen in Monday's series opener. The left-hander has been out since early July with left triceps tendinitis, but he should be reasonably stretched out for starting duties after throwing 60 pitches during his lone rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis last Wednesday.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Covers three innings in rehab start

Falter (tricep) struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks in three innings in his rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Indianapolis. Falter tossed 60 pitches (42 strikes) in the rehab start, which could be the only outing he needs in the minors before making his way back from the 15-day injured list. The Pirates have an open spot in the rotation for Tuesday's game in Houston, and Falter would be available on five days' rest to fill the opening. If Falter is in fact activated to start Tuesday, he could be on a slight workload restriction for what would be his first outing with the Pirates since July 6.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Beginning rehab assignment

Falter (triceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Falter has been out since early July with left triceps tendinitis but is feeling well enough to kick off a rehab assignment. The left-hander could be ready to return from the 10-day injured list by early next week if his outing goes well Wednesday, but an additional rehab outing might be a likelier outcome.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Throws live batting practice

Falter (triceps) threw a live batting practice session Thursday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Falter looked healthy during the session, and the next steps in the left-hander's recovery will be discussed over the next day or two. Falter has been sidelined since early July with left triceps tendinitis.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Shelved with triceps tendinitis

The Pirates placed Falter on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left triceps tendinitis. Falter was pulled during his start in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Mets with what the Pirates initially termed as left posterior arm discomfort, but the team has now settled on a more precise diagnosis for the injury. He'll be ineligible to rejoin the Pirates for at least the next two weeks, and a clearer timeline for his return should emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing. The Pirates could activate Quinn Priester (lat) from the IL during the upcoming week to fill Falter's spot in the rotation.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Battling arm discomfort

Falter was removed from his start Saturday against the Mets due to left posterior arm discomfort. Falter was only able to get through two innings before making an early exit, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters. The Pirates' medical staff will take him in for further testing, and the team will likely have a better idea of his availability for his next start once his results come back.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Gets fourth win

Falter (4-6) earned the win Sunday over Atlanta. He allowed one run on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over five innings. Falter struggled with his command Sunday as he walked a career-high four batters but still did enough to get the win. He got out of trouble with double-play grounders in the fourth and fifth innings, and he managed to snap a streak of four straight losses. Falter had been having a dismal June prior to this start (0-4 and 6.63 ERA), but he'll take a 3.87 ERA and 1.14 WHIP into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Mets next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Hit hard by Dodgers

Falter (3-3) took the loss Thursday against the Dodgers, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks across four innings. He struck out six. Falter's start began and ended poorly, as he yielded four runs in the first inning --including a three-run home run by Freddie Freeman -- before getting pulled after allowing a solo homer to Teoscar Hernandez to lead off the fifth. The outing marked Falter's first time allowing more than three runs since April 29 and snapped a streak of four straight quality starts. Through 68.1 innings, Falter owns a 3.69 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He's lined up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis on Wednesday.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Sharp again vs. Atlanta

Falter (3-2) earned the win Friday over Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He struck out four. Ronald Acuna broke up Falter's shutout bid with a three-run homer in the eighth. The southpaw has pitched into the eighth inning in back-to-back outings while delivering three straight quality starts, lowering his ERA to 3.55 with a 0.98 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB across 10 starts (58.1 innings) this season. Falter's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Blue Jays in his next outing.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Strong start wasted Saturday

Falter came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Cubs, allowing three hits and two walks over 7.2 scoreless innings. He struck out two. While he wasn't dominant, managing only six swinging strikes among his 83 pitches, Falter produced a steady stream of weak contact and didn't give up an extra-base hit or let a baserunner get into scoring position until the eighth inning. Falter has delivered back-to-back quality starts, giving him four on the season, and the southpaw will take a 3.53 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB through 51 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next weekend against Atlanta.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Making start Sunday

Falter will start Sunday's game against the Cubs, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Paul Skenes will come up to make his major-league debut Saturday, which has thrown the rotation statuses of Falter and Quinn Priester into question. While Falter will take the ball Sunday, manager Derek Shelton wasn't ready to commit to how his rotation will look after that. Falter has a 4.34 ERA and 26:9 K:BB over 37.1 innings covering seven starts this season.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Allows two homers in no-decision

Falter did not factor into the decision, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Sunday against the Rockies. He struck out three. Falter allowed three consecutive extra-base hits, including back-to-back homers, in the second inning, resulting in three runs crossing the plate. However, he was able to keep the Pirates in the game, working his way through 5.1 frames without allowing any additional damage. Falter has tossed at least five innings in six of seven starts this season while allowing three or fewer runs in five of those games for an ERA of 4.34 with a quality 1.02 WHIP. Despite his general effectiveness, Falter's spot in the rotation appears shaky as Pirates top-prospect Paul Skenes also pitched Sunday in Triple-A with a call to the majors likely not far off for the highly-touted righty. When Skenes does receive the call, it will likely be either Falter or Quinn Priester who is likely to lose a rotation spot with the currently injured Marco Gonzales also muddying up the waters further if he eventually returns from a forearm issue that's kept him sidelined since April 14.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Outdueled in Wednesday's loss

Falter (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings as the Pirates fell 9-1 to the Mets. He struck out four. The 26-year-old southpaw served up a two-run homer to Starling Marte in the third inning, but he otherwise shut New York down over 73 pitches (47 strikes). Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Luis Severino was a little bit better for the home squad. Falter has been tagged for only three runs over his last three starts and 16 innings, lowering his ERA to 4.05, but his 10:5 K:BB through 20 frames on the year highlights his limited fantasy ceiling. He lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Brewers.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns first win

Falter (1-0) picked up the win in Friday's 5-2 victory over the Phillies, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out three batters across five innings. Falter rarely faltered against his former club, as his lone blemish came on an RBI single off the bat of Bryson Stott during the fifth inning. However, the 26-year-old southpaw still owns a 4.20 ERA on the year and has struck out just six batters through 15 frames, putting a relatively low ceiling on his fantasy value. He's lined up to make his next start on the road Wednesday against the Mets.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Allows six runs over four innings

Falter did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings against the Marlins. He struck out two. Falter allowed five runs in the first inning, capped by a grand slam by Jazz Chisholm, but settled down thereafter in allowing just one more run through four innings and giving the Pirates an opportunity for the comeback win. Falter earned the starting role out of spring training, but with the likes of Luis Ortiz and Roansy Contreras nipping at his heels on the big-league roster, along with Quinn Priester and Paul Skenes at Triple-A, Falter will need far better outings than what he produced Sunday to remain in the rotation. His next start won't get any easier, as he's tentatively slated for a home matchup against the Orioles next weekend.
