  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Moves to injured list

Falter was placed on the 15-day injured list with neck soreness and overall fatigue Sunday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The left-hander was tagged for eight earned runs over two innings Saturday in Cincinnati, and his season will end a week early due to the injuries. Falter struggled as a rotation piece for both the Phillies and Pirates this year, and he closes the campaign with a 5.36 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 60:20 K:BB across 80.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Pounded for eight runs Saturday

Falter allowed eight runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one batter over two innings in a no-decision against Cincinnati on Saturday. Falter logged just one inning as an opener in his previous outing, but it's unclear if he was slated to return to more of a traditional starting role Saturday. The lefty hurler didn't earn a chance to go very deep as he was pummeled for eight runs in just two frames. The Reds knocked three homers against Falter, including two in the first inning. Perhaps the only positive part of the pitcher's outing was that Pittsburgh was able to overcome a 9-0 deficit to pick up a victory and protect him from taking the loss. Despite the short outing, Falter tossed 57 pitches, so he presumably will have just one more chance to take the mound before the end of the campaign.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Takes loss as opener

Falter (2-9) took the loss in Tuesday's 14-1 rout at the hands of the Cubs, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks in just one inning. He struck out one. The 26-year-old southpaw started the game but got a quick hook after only 24 pitches (15 strikes), with rookie righty Quinn Priester replacing him on the mound to begin the second inning. Falter had delivered a quality start against the Nationals in his last outing, but there's been no indication from the Bucs that his early exit Tuesday was due to any kind of injury, suggesting the move was made for strategic reasons. If Falter and Priester continue to be deployed as a tandem in some fashion, the duo would line up for two more appearances before the end of the regular season, but the lefty has been the far more effective pitcher lately, posting a 2.51 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 14.1 innings in September.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Getting another start

Falter is starting Tuesday's game against the Cubs in Chicago. Falter tossed six innings of one-run ball on 67 pitches the last time he drew a traditional start Sept. 12 versus the Nationals. The 26-year-old left-hander carries an overall 3.62 ERA and 30:9 K:BB through 37.1 innings of work with the Pirates, who acquired him from the Phillies at the Aug. 1 trade deadline in exchange for Rodolfo Castro.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns quality start, win

Falter (2-8) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four. Falter retired the first 11 Nationals in order before surrendering his lone earned run on an RBI single in the fourth inning. He earned his third quality start and second win of the campaign. The versatile southpaw has allowed just six hits and two earned runs while accumulating a 9:2 K:BB across his last 13.1 innings, spanning two bulk relief appearances and Tuesday's traditional start. It remains to be seen how Falter will be deployed in his next appearance, but he currently lines up to pitch in Pittsburgh's next series against the Yankees this weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Starting for Pirates on Tuesday

Falter will start for the Pirates on Tuesday against the Nationals, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Pittsburgh has used Falter as a bulk reliever three times and a traditional starter four times in his seven appearances since coming over from the Phillies via trade. The southpaw will be deployed in the latter role Tuesday, as manager Derek Shelton has opted against using an opener. Falter's last traditional start came on Aug. 27, when he was torched for six runs over 4.2 innings in a loss to the Cubs.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Works in bulk relief Wednesday

Falter struck out three over 3.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen Wednesday but didn't factor into the decision in the Pirates' 5-4 win over the Brewers. He gave up one hit and no walks in the 44-pitch outing. For his second appearance in a row, the 26-year-old southpaw worked behind an opening pitcher, as Colin Selby got the starting nod Wednesday and covered one inning before turning the game over to Falter. Between his last two outings, he has struck out five batters while allowing just one earned run on two hits and one walk across 7.1 innings, so the Pirates could be incentivized to continue deploying him as a bulk reliever rather than a traditional starter.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Works 3.2 innings behind opener

Falter allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters over 3.2 innings in bulk relief in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday. Falter came into the contest having started in 11 of his 13 appearances on the season, but Pittsburgh elected to use him behind an opener Saturday. The southpaw fared well in that role, giving up a solo homer to Lars Nootbaar in the fifth frame but otherwise keeping St. Louis off the scoreboard. The long ball was the only hit Falter allowed in 3.2 frames, but he was still pulled after a modest 43 pitches despite going at least 4.2 innings in each of his previous three outings. It's unclear if Falter will continue to work as a primary pitcher or move back to a traditional starting role moving forward.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Falls to Cubs

Falter (1-8) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out three. Falter held the Cubs to one run through his first three innings before Jeimer Candelario broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the fourth. That was followed by a Chicago three-run, two-out rally in the fifth. It was a tough day for the 26-year-old Falter, who allowed just two runs over his previous two outings (11.1 innings). The southpaw's ERA is now up to 5.04 with a 1.45 WHIP and 49:15 K:BB across 64.1 innings this season. Falter's currently scheduled for a road matchup with the Cardinals in his next start.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Earns win in bulk relief

Falter (1-7) earned the win Monday against the Cardinals. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. The 26-year-old lefty operated as Pittsburgh's bulk reliever after Thomas Hatch pitched the first three innings in an opener role Monday. Apart from an Andrew Knizner solo home run in the fifth inning, Falter breezed through the final six innings of the contest, receiving ample run support and earning his first victory of the campaign. This marks back-to-back impressive outings for the southpaw, as he's allowed just two earned runs -- both solo home runs -- over 11.1 frames while posting a 13:3 K:BB during that span. It remains to be seen what Falter's role will be moving forward.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Best effort yet as Buc

Falter came away with a no-decision Tuesday in the Pirates' 7-4 win over the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out five. The lefty put together his best performance in three starts since joining the Pittsburgh rotation, tossing 52 of 82 pitches for strikes and shutting down the New York offense after Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot. Falter's 4.05 ERA with his new team isn't supported by his 1.65 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 13.1 innings, making him a risky play in his next outing, which is likely to come at home early next week against the Cardinals.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Struggles through four frames

Falter did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings against Atlanta. He struck out three. It was an ugly start for Falter as the recently acquired lefty allowed runs in each of the first three innings to put the Pirates in an early 4-0 hole. He finally managed to pitch a scoreless inning in the fourth, but he would not return in the fifth after reaching 86 pitches. Falter did manage to avoid taking his eighth loss thanks to Pittsburgh's late comeback, but he has yet to collect his first win of the season. He's now allowed at least four earned runs in three of his last five outings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Remains in rotation

Falter is scheduled to start Thursday's game against Atlanta at PNC Park. After being acquired from the Phillies on Tuesday, Falter immediately reported to the Pirates and stepped in as the club's new No. 5 starter, filling the spot in the rotation that opened up when Rich Hill was dealt to the Padres earlier in the week. In his first big-league appearance since May 15 this past Saturday, Falter acquitted himself well in his Pirates debut, taking a no-decision while limiting the Brewers to one earned run on six hits and one walk. Despite the solid results against Milwaukee, Falter doesn't profile as a trustworthy streaming option while taking on a much stronger Atlanta offense that leads the majors in home runs by a wide margin (213 to 181) and ranks second in batting average (.270) this season.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Tosses four frames in team debut

Falter allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters over four-plus innings in a no-decision Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Brewers. Falter was recalled from the minors ahead of Saturday's contest to make his first appearance in a Pittsburgh uniform after being acquired in a trade with the Phillies at the deadline. The southpaw made a decent impression, giving up six hits -- only one for extra bases -- and holding the Brewers to one run over four frames. Falter was ahead 2-0 heading into the fifth and could have had a shot at a win, but he was pulled in that inning after giving up a single to each of the first two batters he faced. It appears the 26-year-old will get a shot to remain in the Pirates' rotation with the team likely out of contention and looking to the future.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Recalled ahead of start

The Pirates officially recalled Falter ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against the Brewers, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Falter was added to the taxi squad Friday and is now on the Pirates' active roster for the first time after coming over from Philadelphia at the deadline in exchange for infielder Rodolfo Castro. While Falter has mostly struggled at the highest level this season (5.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP), he showed promise in 2021 and 2022, and the Pirates are evaluating for the future.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Lit up in bulk role

Falter (0-7) took the loss in Monday's 6-3 defeat to San Francisco. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two over 4.1 innings. After seeing Falter struggle through his first seven starts, the Phillies elected to use an opener in front of the lefty and instead have him pitch in a bulk-relief role. The arrangement clearly didn't help. Falter gave up all six of his runs in the second inning, as the Giants sent 10 hitters to the plate. He's now sitting on a 5.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and just 28 strikeouts in 40.1 innings on the season.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Falls to 0-6

Falter (0-6) took the loss against Boston on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. Falter was perfect through three frames, but he imploded in the fourth. In that inning, he got only two outs and yielded six hits along with one walk, leading to five Red Sox runs. The southpaw has taken a loss in six of his seven outings this season, though this was only the second time he's given up more than four runs. With Ranger Suarez (elbow) headed back to the rotation next weekend, the Phillies are opting to move Matt Strahm to the bullpen, but Falter may need to show marked improvement moving forward if he's going to hold on to a starting role for the entire campaign.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Gets no help in quality start

Falter (0-3) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings in a 3-0 loss. He struck out three. It was a solid performance from the southpaw, who tossed 67 of 98 pitches for strikes en route to his first quality start of the season, but the Phillies managed only one hit against Lucas Giolito and the White Sox bullpen. Falter will carry a 4.50 ERA and 12:4 K:BB through 22 innings into his next outing, likely to come early next week at home against the Mariners.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Struggles in second loss of season

Falter (0-2) took the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against Cincinnati. He struck out four. While Falter turned in decent performances in his first two starts, this one left plenty to be desired. The California native has been unable to complete the sixth inning through three starts and has a 4.80 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB over 15 innings. His next turn through the rotation tentatively lines up for early next week against the White Sox.

  • Phillies' Bailey Falter: Fans two in no-decision

Falter did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits over five innings against the Reds. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. The Reds made a lot of loud contact against Falter, but they came away with nothing to show for it outside of Spencer Steer's first-inning home run. He won't always be so lucky on balls in play, but Falter has now gone two starts without a walk to begin the season, showcasing even better control than he displayed in 2022. Falter lines up to face these same Reds again next week, this time in Cincinnati.
