Vladimir Gutierrez: Elects free agency
Gutierrez elected free agency Thursday.
Gutierrez had been removed from the Reds' 40-man roster and has opted to test out free agency rather than accept an outright assignment. He didn't pitch at the major-league level in 2023 after having a late-season setback from Tommy John surgery. It's unclear what Gutierrez's current health status is.... See More ... See Less

Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: May be nursing injury
The Reds announced Wednesday that Gutierrez (elbow) has been pulled from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville.
Gutierrez had been tracking toward a return from the 60-day injured list next weekend, but the Reds' decision to bring him back from the rehab assignment a week and a half early seemingly indicates that he suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. According to MLB.com, Gutierrez's fastball had hovered between 91 and 93 miles per hour in his first two rehab appearances with Louisville, but his average velocity dropped down to 90.3 mph during his most recent outing this past Saturday, when he was tagged for four earned runs on two hits and two walks over 1.1 innings. Gutierrez will presumably be evaluated by the Reds' team doctors before an update is provided on his next steps.... See More ... See Less

Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: Month away from facing hitters
Gutierrez (elbow) is tentatively scheduled to resume facing hitters in live batting practice July 25, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Gutierrez is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent July 20, 2022. The fact that the Reds have already identified a date a month down the road for when Gutierrez might face hitters suggests he's already resumed a throwing program, though it's unclear whether he's currently throwing bullpen sessions or if he remains limited to playing catch off flat ground. Cincinnati is hoping that Gutierrez will be ready to start a minor-league rehab assignment in the first week of August before potentially joining the big-league bullpen later that month or sometime in September.... Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: Moves to IL
The Reds placed Gutierrez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
The move is simply a procedural one to clear a 40-man roster spot, as Gutierrez underwent Tommy John surgery last July and will miss most, if not all, of 2023. If he does return, it would likely be for just a couple of appearances in September.... See More ... See Less

Gutierrez (elbow) is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery later this month, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Gutierrez, the Reds and the team's medical staff made the collective decision to have the right-hander go under the knife after he suffered a setback with his strained elbow during a live batting practice session Tuesday. Based on the timing of his upcoming surgery, Gutierrez will miss the remainder of the 2022 campaign and likely the majority of the 2023 season while recovering from the procedure. He'll become the third Reds pitcher to require Tommy John in the last calendar year, joining Tejay Antone and Justin Wilson.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: Tosses live bullpen session
Gutierrez (elbow) completed a live batting practice session Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Before he was placed on the 15-day injured list just over a month ago with a first-degree right elbow strain, Gutierrez had been working out of the bullpen. The Reds aren't yet decided on what kind of role Gutierrez will handle once he's back to full strength, as the team will have him build up to three innings in his throwing progression before determining whether he'll return from the IL as a reliever or starter. Since he still has yet to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment, Gutierrez isn't on track to return until after the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: Headed to 60-day IL
Reds manager David Bell said Gutierrez (elbow) suffered a setback during the final pitch of his live batting practice session Tuesday and will be transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The transaction will open up a spot on the 40-man roster, which the Reds will likely use when they presumably call up another pitcher from the minors for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Pirates. As a result of the move, Gutierrez won't be eligible for activation until the first week of August, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to go by then.... See More ... See Less

Gutierrez (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this week, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Reds' Vladimir Gutierrez: Avoids worst-case outcome
Gutierrez will be shut down for two weeks with a first-degree UCL strain but has avoided a more serious injury, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Gutierrez hit the injured list Sunday with what was originally called right forearm soreness. Any time a UCL is involved, things seldom look particularly good, but it at least seems as though Tommy John surgery is off the table at this time. Given that he won't be throwing for two weeks, however, it will be quite a while before he's back in action at the big-league level.... See More ... See Less

Gutierrez (1-6) earned the win Saturday versus the Giants. He allowed a run on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings.
The only run against Gutierrez came on a Joc Pederson double in the third inning. He owns an ugly 7.71 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 28:22 K:BB across 35 innings this year. The 26-year-old projects to make his next start versus the lowly Nationals next week.... See More ... See Less
