  • Reds' Allen Cordoba: Latches on with Cincy

Cordoba signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday that includes an invitation to big-league camp.

Cordoba hit .299/.392/.446 in 296 plate appearances at the Double-A level for the Padres in 2021, and he'll join the Reds for spring training to try and earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Rebounding in 2019

Cordoba went 12-for-29 with two doubles, a triple, six runs, three RBI and five stolen bases for High-A Lake Elsinore last week.

The 23-year-old had a torrid week for the Storm, as he continues to rebound nicely after missing extended time last season due to a concussion suffered in a car accident. After hitting just .206 over 164 plate appearances in the California League last season, Cordoba is slashing a respectable .303/.351/.407 through 248 plate appearances so far in 2019.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Fully healthy

Cordoba (thumb) is playing in the Panamanian Winter League, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.

Cordoba is apparently back to health and participating in winter ball after undergoing season-ending thumb surgery in August. The 23-year-old slashed .206/.233/.310 across 45 games with High-A Lake Elsinore in 2018 before being cast off San Diego's 40-man roster.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Outrighted to minors

Cordoba (thumb) was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

Cordoba, who was designated for assignment last week, was sent to El Paso after passing through waivers unclaimed. The soon-to-be 23-year-old hit .206/.233/.310 across 45 games with High-A Lake Elsinore in 2018 before undergoing season-ending surgery in August.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Dropped from 40-man roster

Cordoba (thumb) was designated for assignment by the Padres on Tuesday.

Cordoba slashed .206/.233/.310 in 45 games with High-A Lake Elsinore before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left thumb in mid-August. A former Rule 5 pick himself, Cordoba was DFA'd along with a handful of other players so the Padres could protect prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Undergoes season-ending thumb surgery

Cordoba underwent season-ending surgery to repair UCL damage in his left thumb Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

After spending the entirety of the 2017 season on the Padres' roster as a Rule 5 pick, Cordoba went all the way back down to High-A Lake Elsinore this year, hitting just .206/.233/.310 in 45 games. He'll look to continue climbing the levels next year but is far from returning to the big leagues.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Activated, optioned to High-A

Cordoba (concussion) was activated from the 60-day disabled list Sunday and optioned to High-A Lake Elsinore.

A 2016 Rule 5 selection, Cordoba made the jump from rookie ball to the majors last season and predictably struggled, slashing .208/.282/.297 across 227 plate appearances. After sustaining a concussion in a February car crash, Cordoba was sidelined for nearly four months before he resumed a rehab assignment June 11. With his 20-day rehab window coming to a close, Cordoba will now settle into a full-time role at Lake Elsinore, where he should have a better chance at finding success against more age-appropriate competition.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Begins rehab assignment

Cordoba (concussion) played his first game of the season for High-A Lake Elsinore on Monday, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.

Cordoba had been out all season after suffering a concussion in a car crash in mid-February. He's listed as being on a rehab assignment, but there's no guarantee he'll end up back in the majors once the assignment concludes, as he'd never played above rookie ball before being taken by the Padres in the Rule 5 draft prior to the 2017 season. He didn't do much to demand major-league time last season, hitting just .208/.282/.297. With the Padres having fulfilled their obligation to keep him in the majors all season last year, they can now continue his development at a more appropriate level this season.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Shifted to 60-day DL

Cordoba (concussion) was shifted to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday.

This was always expected, and it frees up a spot on the Padres' 40-man roster for Tyson Ross, who is scheduled to start against the Rockies on Tuesday. Cordoba remains without a timetable for his return as he continues to deal with concussion-like symptoms stemming from a mid-February car crash. He won't be eligible to return until June.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Heads to DL

Cordoba (concussion) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.

Cordoba is expected to land on the 60-day disabled list, but the Padres don't need a 40-man roster spot at the moment, so they'll hold off on making that move for now. He's still suffering from concussion-like symptoms stemming from a mid-February car crash, and at this point, his return to baseball activities is not imminent. Cordoba, who hit .208/.282/.297 across 227 plate appearances as a Rule 5 pick last season, is expected to report to the minors once he's healthy enough to return to game action.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Expected to hit 60-day DL

The Padres are expected to place Cordoba (concussion) on the 60-day disabled list, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Cordoba is still suffering from concussion-like symptoms following a mid-February car accident, with manager Andy Green indicating last week that the 22-year-old is "not getting better at all" in his recovery. With Cordoba's return to baseball activities not imminent, the Padres will shut him down for the next two months and open up an extra spot on the 40-man roster in the process. After slashing just .208/.282/.297 across 227 plate appearances with the Padres last season as a Rule 5 pick, it's expected that Cordoba will report to the minors once he progresses to the point of playing in games.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Remains without timetable

Manager Andy Green said that Cordoba is "not getting better at all" and that the concussion "does not look like it's resolving any time soon," Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cordoba is still experiencing symptoms stemming from the concussion he suffered in an automobile accident in Panama on Feb. 7. Green stated that the 22-year-old was finally cleared to walk outside last week, but it "did not go well" and that he's "back to square one, and square one is minimal activity." This lack of progress is "unusual but not unheard of" while dealing with a concussion from an accident, according to Dr. Vernon Williams, a prominent neurologist that Acee cited in the story. The fact that he is still experiencing sensitivity to light makes it difficult for the club to provide any sort of timetable, so it doesn't appear as though he will be back on the field anytime in the near future. Expect another update on his status in the coming weeks.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Taking it slowly in concussion rehab

Cordoba (concussion) remains without a timetable for return, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.

Cordoba suffered a concussion during a car accident in mid-February and still does not appear to be close to returning to action. The shortstop attempted to participate in some individual drills recently but apparently experienced some sensitivity to the light and workload, so the Padres quickly shut him down again. At this point, it's hard to say if Cordoba will be ready for Opening Day.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Still sidelined with concussion

Cordoba has not returned to the field since suffering a concussion earlier in the month, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Cordoba suffered the concussion in a car accident a couple of weeks ago, and it appears he's still not quite back to 100 percent. He remains without a timetable, but the Padres will continue to bring him along slowly. The 22-year-old is expected to open the year in the minors after batting just .208 for the big club last season.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Dealing with concussion

Cordoba suffered a concussion after being involved in a car accident a few days ago, MLB.com's AJ Cassavell reports.

At this point, there is no timetable for Cordoba's return, although it's expected that he will be fully recovered well before Opening Day. Since the nature of a concussion can be wide-ranging, the club is choosing to take is easy with Cordoba, so don't expect him to be back doing any baseball activities in the near future. There should be an update on his status within the next couple weeks.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Touched up in recent car crash

Cordoba will be brought along slowly at the start of spring training after he was part of a car accident recently, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

It's unclear exactly what is ailing the 22-year-old, but the Padres likely want to take things slowly with him even if it's something minor. It doesn't seem like this should affect his availability for the start of the regular season, but more information should come forth as he ramps up his activity. After batting .208 with the Padres last season, Cordoba will likely head back to the minors for more seasoning.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Receives rare start Sunday

Cordoba started in right field and went 2-for-4 in Sunday's win over Colorado.

The 21-year-old was a late addition to the lineup after Jabari Blash was scratched for an undisclosed reason. It was Cordoba's first start since Sept. 2 and just his second since July 26, so the Padres are unlikely to use the Rule 5 draft pick in anything more than a reserve utility role.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Comes off bench to steal base

Cordoba entered Thursday's game as a pinch hitter, walking and stealing his second base of the season in a 2-1 loss to Washington.

Cordoba hasn't started a game since July 26 despite a constant spot on the 25-man roster. The 21-year-old's production tailed off after a hot start to the season, and he currently owns a disappointing .219/.293/.315 slash line in 208 plate appearances. The Padres' regular fourth outfielder, Matt Szczur, is away from the team on paternity leave, so Cordoba could see a rare start should any of the club's starting outfielders receive a maintenance day.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Takes seat Sunday

Cordoba is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cordoba appeared poised to take over as the Padres' regular shortstop after Erick Aybar was placed on the disabled list July 22 with a fractured foot, but with the rookie recording just one hit in 16 at-bats since that time, he may have fallen behind Dusty Coleman on the depth chart. Coleman will pick up his third start in four games Sunday.

  • Padres' Allen Cordoba: Socks rare homer

Cordoba hit a two-run homer in a 1-for-3 effort against the Mets on Tuesday.

The second-inning long ball was the rookie's fourth in 78 games (194 plate appearances) this season. As a Rule 5 pick, he's relatively safe in his position on San Diego's roster, but Cordoba's spotty playing time and poor offensive production sharply limit his fantasy value.
