Reds' Allen Cordoba: Latches on with Cincy
Cordoba signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday that includes an invitation to big-league camp.
Cordoba hit .299/.392/.446 in 296 plate appearances at the Double-A level for the Padres in 2021, and he'll join the Reds for spring training to try and earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Cordoba went 12-for-29 with two doubles, a triple, six runs, three RBI and five stolen bases for High-A Lake Elsinore last week.
The 23-year-old had a torrid week for the Storm, as he continues to rebound nicely after missing extended time last season due to a concussion suffered in a car accident. After hitting just .206 over 164 plate appearances in the California League last season, Cordoba is slashing a respectable .303/.351/.407 through 248 plate appearances so far in 2019.

Cordoba slashed .206/.233/.310 in 45 games with High-A Lake Elsinore before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left thumb in mid-August. A former Rule 5 pick himself, Cordoba was DFA'd along with a handful of other players so the Padres could protect prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

Cordoba underwent season-ending surgery to repair UCL damage in his left thumb Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
After spending the entirety of the 2017 season on the Padres' roster as a Rule 5 pick, Cordoba went all the way back down to High-A Lake Elsinore this year, hitting just .206/.233/.310 in 45 games. He'll look to continue climbing the levels next year but is far from returning to the big leagues.

Cordoba (concussion) was activated from the 60-day disabled list Sunday and optioned to High-A Lake Elsinore.
A 2016 Rule 5 selection, Cordoba made the jump from rookie ball to the majors last season and predictably struggled, slashing .208/.282/.297 across 227 plate appearances. After sustaining a concussion in a February car crash, Cordoba was sidelined for nearly four months before he resumed a rehab assignment June 11. With his 20-day rehab window coming to a close, Cordoba will now settle into a full-time role at Lake Elsinore, where he should have a better chance at finding success against more age-appropriate competition.

Cordoba (concussion) played his first game of the season for High-A Lake Elsinore on Monday, Bill Center of MLB.com reports.
Cordoba had been out all season after suffering a concussion in a car crash in mid-February. He's listed as being on a rehab assignment, but there's no guarantee he'll end up back in the majors once the assignment concludes, as he'd never played above rookie ball before being taken by the Padres in the Rule 5 draft prior to the 2017 season. He didn't do much to demand major-league time last season, hitting just .208/.282/.297. With the Padres having fulfilled their obligation to keep him in the majors all season last year, they can now continue his development at a more appropriate level this season.

This was always expected, and it frees up a spot on the Padres' 40-man roster for Tyson Ross, who is scheduled to start against the Rockies on Tuesday. Cordoba remains without a timetable for his return as he continues to deal with concussion-like symptoms stemming from a mid-February car crash. He won't be eligible to return until June.

Padres' Allen Cordoba: Remains without timetable
Manager Andy Green said that Cordoba is "not getting better at all" and that the concussion "does not look like it's resolving any time soon," Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Cordoba is still experiencing symptoms stemming from the concussion he suffered in an automobile accident in Panama on Feb. 7. Green stated that the 22-year-old was finally cleared to walk outside last week, but it "did not go well" and that he's "back to square one, and square one is minimal activity." This lack of progress is "unusual but not unheard of" while dealing with a concussion from an accident, according to Dr. Vernon Williams, a prominent neurologist that Acee cited in the story. The fact that he is still experiencing sensitivity to light makes it difficult for the club to provide any sort of timetable, so it doesn't appear as though he will be back on the field anytime in the near future. Expect another update on his status in the coming weeks.

Cordoba hasn't started a game since July 26 despite a constant spot on the 25-man roster. The 21-year-old's production tailed off after a hot start to the season, and he currently owns a disappointing .219/.293/.315 slash line in 208 plate appearances. The Padres' regular fourth outfielder, Matt Szczur, is away from the team on paternity leave, so Cordoba could see a rare start should any of the club's starting outfielders receive a maintenance day.
