  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Laces timely double Saturday

Urias went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in a loss to the Cubs on Saturday.

The offseason addition opened the game at third base and was able to contribute the only run of the game for the Mariners with his second-inning two-bagger that knotted the score at 1-1. His success Saturday notwithstanding, Urias is still scuffling overall with a .174 average and .296 on-base percentage; however, he also carries a .435 slugging percentage thanks to all four of his knocks to date having gone for extra bases.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Breaks out of funk Wednesday

Urias went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in a loss to the Guardians on Wednesday.

The modestly successful day at the plate, which came in Urias' third start, snapped the infielder out of a season-opening 0-for-8 slump. The 26-year-old has split time at the hot corner with Josh Rojas thus far, and perhaps Wednesday's performance will help ignite his bat after he also cooled off over the latter portion of spring training following a hot start to Cactus League play.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Sitting Saturday vs. Boston

Urias is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox.

Urias has struggled in his first two starts of the season, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Josh Rojas will start at third base and bat ninth Saturday against Red Sox right-hander Kutter Crawford.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Continues strong spring Thursday

Urias went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win over the Brewers on Thursday.

Urias's sixth-inning solo shot off potential Milwaukee closer Joel Payamps pushed Seattle's lead to 4-1 and served as his second homer of spring. The offseason addition has overcome some early adversity stemming from a shoulder injury, playing third base with regularity and putting together a .333 batting average with a double, a triple, the pair of round trippers and four RBI across nine exhibitions.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Plays three innings on defense

Urias made his spring debut on defense in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the Rangers on Tuesday, going 0-for-1 and playing three innings.

Urias' ability to play the field was an important step, considering he's been dealing with right shoulder soreness and had therefore been limited to designated hitter duties over his first three spring appearances. Now that he's been able to get on the diamond, the next step for the 26-year-old is to get his bat going -- he's just 1-for-6 with an RBI over his first four Cactus League contests.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Playing third base Tuesday

Urias (shoulder) is starting at third base and batting seventh for the Mariners in Tuesday's Cactus League contest against the Rangers, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.

Urias has started some games at designated hitter, but this is his first time playing the field this spring as he comes back from right shoulder soreness. The shoulder still isn't 100 percent, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, but the Mariners evidently feel it's good enough to test things out in a game. There had been some concern that Urias might not be ready in time for Opening Day, but it now would appear he should be OK if he can avoid setbacks. Urias is slated to see starts at the hot corner for the M's, perhaps sharing the position with Josh Rojas.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Throwing in infield drills

Urias (shoulder) will do some throwing in infield drills Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

He will still be somewhat limited, but it's a step forward as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation. Urias is still serving as a designated hitter in Cactus League games -- he went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run against the White Sox in that capacity Thursday -- but he will probably require an injured list stint if he's not able to play the field by Opening Day.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Could need IL stint

Urias (shoulder) could require a stint on the injured list to begin the season, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Urias is currently limited to light tossing from about 70 feet as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation, suggesting that he's probably not close to being cleared to play third base in a game. Divish also writes that Urias showed up to camp "in less-than-stellar shape" following a poor showing in the Mexican Pacific Winter League. The plan has been to platoon Urias and Josh Rojas at third base, but if Urias isn't ready, Dylan Moore and/or Sam Haggerty could be used some at the hot corner. Seattle also recently signed Brian Anderson as a non-roster invitee, a move that may or may not have been directly related to Urias' situation.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Working back from shoulder issue

Urias has resumed workouts following a shutdown period due to right shoulder inflammation, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.

Urias was diagnosed with inflammation after reporting to camp early a couple weeks ago. The good news is that testing came back negative and he has since been cleared for workouts. It's possible the Mariners will ease Urias into Cactus League play, but it does not appear this will interrupt his availability for the start of the season.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Nets $5 million from Seattle

The Mariners and Urias avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract Thursday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.

It was his second year of arbitration eligibility. Urias reportedly had been set to be non-tendered by the Red Sox, but the Mariners traded for him, and he's now in line to open the 2024 season as their starting third baseman.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: In line for third base job

Urias is currently projected as the Mariners' starting third baseman following their trade of Eugenio Suarez, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Seattle acquired Urias from Boston last week and he's now at the top of the team's depth chart at third base, although it's possible the Mariners bring someone else in at the position this offseason. Urias had a dreadful 2023, posting just a .636 OPS with three homers in 52 games while spending a chunk of the year in the minors. He looked like a solid regular a couple years ago, though, and is just 26 years of age.

  • Mariners' Luis Urias: Traded to Seattle

The Mariners acquired Urias from the Red Sox on Friday in exchange for Isaiah Campbell, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Urias was likely going to be non-tendered by the Red Sox ahead of Friday's deadline had this trade not come together. He posted a disappointing .194/.337/.299 batting line over 177 plate appearances this past year between Milwaukee and Boston, but the former top prospect is only 26 years old and could be a platoon option at second base for the Mariners in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Placed on injured list

The Red Sox placed Urias on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left calf strain, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Urias' placement on the injured list is backdated to Thursday, so he'll be eligible to return for the final game of the season Oct. 1. Pablo Reyes and Ceddanne Rafaela figure to see an increase in playing time at second base, and Enmanuel Valdez will come up from Triple-A Worcester to fill Urias' roster spot.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Sitting out with calf injury

Urias (calf) is absent from the lineup for Friday's tilt against the White Sox.

Urias tweaked his left calf during Wednesday's game versus the Rangers and isn't ready to play even after Thursday's off day. Ceddanne Rafaela is covering second base for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Exits with calf tightness

Urias was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rangers due to left calf tightness, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

The 26-year-old has recently been working as Boston's primary second baseman and went 1-for-3 with a strikeout before leaving Wednesday's contest. Urias will have a team day off Thursday to recover before Friday's series opener versus the White Sox.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Gaining traction at keystone

Urias will start at second base and bat eighth Monday against the Rangers.

Urias will stick in the lineup for the sixth time in seven games and looks to have usurped Pablo Reyes as the Red Sox's preferred option at the keystone. The 26-year-old hasn't seemed to earn the extra playing time based on his performance, however; he's slashing just .185/.313/.259 with a 34.4 percent strikeout rate thus far in September.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Losing work to Valdez

Urias is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

On the bench against a right-handed starting pitcher (Zach Eflin) for the third time in four games, Urias looks as though he could be moving into a short-side platoon role at second base. The lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez will get another look at the keystone Tuesday after going 2-for-7 with a walk and two RBI between his last two starts.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Sits in second straight

Urias is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Urias is on the bench for a second straight game and looks as though he may not be handed an everyday role at the keystone while the Red Sox await Pablo Reyes' (elbow) return from the 10-day injured list. Enmanuel Valdez will pick up another start at second base after going 1-for-4 with two RBI in Saturday's 9-5 win.

  • Red Sox's Luis Urias: Riding pine Saturday

Urias is not in Saturday's lineup against the Royals.

Urias is hitting .179 with more walks (six) than strikeouts (five) and one home run over his last 10 games. Enmanuel Valdez will start at the keystone while batting ninth.
