Reds' Buck Farmer: Grabs relief win
Farmer (3-4) was credited with Monday's win over the Cubs. He struck out two over 1.2 hitless and scoreless innings.
Farmer replaced starter Andrew Abbott with one out in the fourth inning and retired all four batters faced, including a double play to escape the fourth. The outing was Farmer's 50th of the season, tying him for third most in majors along with fellow Cincinnati bullpen mates Ian Gibaut and Alexis Diaz. The right-handed Farmer endured a rough patch early in July but has righted himself with three runs allowed and 11 strikeouts over the last 9.1 innings.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Cedes two homers in loss
Farmer allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits over one inning in Saturday's 12-5 loss to San Diego.
Farmer allowed back-to-back homers to Juan Soto and Manny Machado, giving him six runs and three home runs allowed in the last two outings. Prior to that, Farmer had been effective out of the bullpen, posting a 2.56 ERA over his first 37 appearances, including 1.75 since May 3. Manager David Bell has had to lean on relievers during a stretch in which a thin rotation is not getting deep into games, and Farmer hasn't pitched a clean inning since June 7.... See More ... Reds' Buck Farmer: Picks up save Wednesday
Farmer earned a save against the Red Sox on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.
Closer Alexis Diaz pitched three of the previous four days, so the Reds turned to Farmer to protect a one-run lead in the ninth. The righty reliever threw just half of his 16 pitches for a strike but managed to retire the side in order for his first save of the campaign. Farmer has pitched well this season with a 2.60 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 27.2 innings, but Diaz has been dominant and is in no danger of losing his ninth-inning role.... See More ... Reds' Buck Farmer: Opening Day loss
Farmer picked up the loss on Opening Day to the Pirates, allowing a run on a walk in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie.
Farmer walked the leadoff hitter, allowed a stolen base, and that runner subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly. He'll likely get future opportunities to get games to Alexis Diaz in the ninth, despite failing to do so on Thursday.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Agrees to terms
Farmer signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Reds on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Farmer was a valuable reliever for the Reds in 2022, as he threw 47 innings while maintaining a 3.83 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He was briefly sent to the minors after struggling in the first half but managed a 2.83 ERA across 35 frames from July 9 to the close of the campaign. Farmer will likely remain locked into a key role in the Cincinnati bullpen in 2023.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Better second half
Farmer finished the 2022 season with a 3.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, five holds and two saves over 47 innings, but he had a 2.83 ERA over 35 innings following his second call-up July 9, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Farmer will be eligible for his third season of arbitration this offseason, which means that the Reds -- who are in austerity mode -- have to decide whether to tender him a contract. Typically a team in that position will opt to go cheap in the bullpen. He projects to make somewhere between $1.4-$1.85 million should he get tendered a contract.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Earns save Sunday
Farmer didn't strike out a batter but pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save during Sunday's win over the Cardinals.
Farmer hasn't had many high-leverage looks out of Cincinnati's bullpen this season, and Sunday's save was just his second of the season and his first since July 31. Although he's worked mainly as a middle reliever, he's been a strong contributor for the Reds over the last month and a half, posting a 0.44 ERA in 20.2 innings over his last 20 appearances. Alexis Diaz has been the favorite for save chances in Cincinnati, but it's possible that Farmer earns a few more high-leverage opportunities down the stretch as long as he continues to limit run production.... Reds' Buck Farmer: Back from bereavement list
Farmer (personal) was reinstated from the bereavement list Saturday.
While his overall numbers leave a lot to be desired (4.67 ERA, 1.44 WHIP), Farmer has been scored upon in just one of his last 11 appearances out of the Cincinnati bullpen. He earned his first career save July 31 and will likely continue to see mid-to-high-leverage opportunities now that he's back on the active roster.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Placed on bereavement list
Farmer was placed on the bereavement list Wednesday.
Farmer has been effective over five appearances since the start of August, picking up a win and a hold while striking out seven in 5.2 scoreless innings. However, he'll spend between three and seven days away from the team after landing on the bereavement list. The move makes room on the active roster for Art Warren (elbow), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Tallies first career save
Farmer gave up one walk but did not surrender a hit in a scoreless ninth inning of work to earn the save in a 3-2 win over the Orioles on SUnday
Farmer was called upon to protect a precarious one-run lead after Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead pinch-hit home run. He shut the door on the Orioles to pick up his first career save. The 31-year-old veteran has pitched only 21 innings so far in 2022 and has a 5.49 ERA. Nevertheless, he finds himself thrust into a co-closer role in Cincinatti along with Alexis Diaz due to injuries to Tony Santillan (back) and Art Warren (right flexor pronator strain) while normal closer Hunter Strickland is on the bereavement list.... Reds' Buck Farmer: Contract selected by Reds
Farmer's contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Farmer made 10 relief appearances for the Reds earlier in the year, and he posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 12 innings. The right-hander rejoined the Reds on a minor-league deal after being designated for assignment in May, and he'll be added to the major-league bullpen after Ross Detwiler (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday.... Reds' Buck Farmer: Re-signs on MiLB deal
Farmer elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Monday and re-signed with the Reds on a minor-league deal, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
After going unclaimed off waivers when he was recently designated for assignment, Farmer had the option of refusing the assignment to the minors since he's accrued just over five years of big-league service time. He quickly re-signed with the Reds and will report to Triple-A, as he presumably recognizes that the Cincinnati organization might be able to offer him a clearer path to returning to the big leagues than another one. Before being dropped from the 40-man roster, Farmer turned in a 6.75 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 12 innings out of the Cincinnati bullpen this season.... See More ... See Less

The Reds outrighted Farmer to Triple-A Louisville on Monday.
Farmer went unclaimed off waivers after he churned out a 6.75 ERA and 1.83 WHIP across his 12 innings out of the Cincinnati bullpen this season before being designated for assignment Friday. He'll stick around in the organization as relief depth at Louisville.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: DFA'd by Cincy
Farmer was designated for assignment by the Reds on Friday.
Farmer earned a spot on the Opening Day roster but will lose his place on the 40-man roster after posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB across 12 innings. The 31-year-old could head to Triple-A Louisville if he passes through waivers unclaimed.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Contract officially selected
Farmer's contract was selected by the Reds on Thursday.
Manager David Bell indicated Monday that Farmer had made the Opening Day roster, so Thursday's transaction was expected. The right-hander struck out nine in five scoreless frames this spring and should serve mainly as a middle reliever to begin the 2022 campaign.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Secures spot on roster
Manager David Bell said Monday that Farmer has made the Reds' Opening Day roster, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Cincinnati will make Farmer's addition to the roster official by selecting his contract at some point shortly before Thursday's Opening Day game in Atlanta. The right-hander earned a spot in the bullpen after striking out nine and allowing three baserunners over five innings in Cactus League play.... See More ... See Less
Reds' Buck Farmer: Reaches deal with Reds
Farmer agreed Wednesday with the Reds on a minor-league contract, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Farmer has spent parts of each of the past eight seasons in the majors with the Tigers, logging a collective 5.33 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 241 appearances (21 starts). He's working exclusively as a reliever at this stage of his career, and his limited success at the big-league level in 2021 resulted in the Tigers designating him for assignment on two occasions before releasing him last August. He then caught on with the Rangers on a minor-league deal, turning in a 3.60 ERA over 15 innings with Triple-A Round Rock before electing free agency earlier in the offseason. The Reds will likely give Farmer the chance to compete for a spot in their Opening Day bullpen, but the prevailing expectation is that he'll head to Triple-A Louisville to begin the season.... Rangers' Buck Farmer: Inks minor-league deal
Farmer signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Saturday.
Farmer was released by the Tigers on Tuesday after he was designated for assignment last weekend, and he'll now try to make an impression at Triple-A Round Rock. The right-hander made 36 relief appearances with Detroit this year and generated a 6.37 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 35.1 innings.... See More ... See Less
Buck Farmer: Jettisoned by Tigers
Farmer was released by the Tigers on Tuesday.
Farmer passed through waivers unclaimed and will now have to search for a new suitor on his own, likely on a minor-league deal. The 30-year-old struggled to a 6.37 ERA this season while walking 12.3 percent of opposing batters. He now owns a career 5.33 ERA in parts of eight seasons at the highest level.... See More ...
