Weaver (neck) struck out two over 3.1 scoreless innings Wednesday in the Yankees' 12-0 win over the Pirates in Grapefruit League play. He scattered two hits and one walk. Weaver was making his first spring appearance since March 7, after a stiff neck had kept him from pitching for nearly two weeks. He took on his biggest workload of the spring in terms of innings (3.1) and pitches (50) in his return and turned in excellent numbers to bolster his case for winning a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day rotation. Weaver appeared poised for a long-relief role heading into spring training, but a rotation spot opened up when Gerrit Cole (elbow) succumbed to an injury that could entail a multi-month recovery.... Yankees' Luke Weaver: Slated for live BP
Weaver (neck) will throw live batting practice Wednesday, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Weaver had to be scratched from a scheduled Grapefruit League start Tuesday due to neck stiffness, but he's expected to be fine. The right-hander might be needed for some starts early on in the season for the Yankees due to Gerrit Cole's (elbow) status being uncertain.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Luke Weaver: Scratched with stiff neck
Weaver has been scratched from Tuesday's scheduled start versus the Blue Jays due to a stiff neck, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Dennis Santana will take the ball instead. Weaver -- who is slated for a long-relief role in 2024 -- should be considered day-to-day.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Luke Weaver: Signs with Yankees
Weaver signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Weaver bounced around between the Reds, Mariners and Yankees last season with limited overall success. However, he logged a 3.38 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 13.1 innings with New York, so the Yankees will bring Weaver back as a potential option at the back end of the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Luke Weaver: Middling in final start of 2023
Weaver (1-2) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over four innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out six. All of the damage against Weaver came via the long ball, with Daulton Varsho and Matt Chapman each tagging him for a solo homer. Though Weaver will finish the 2023 campaign with an ugly 6.40 ERA across 123.2 innings, he showed signs of progress after being added in mid-September by the Yankees, logging a 3.38 ERA and a 16:3 K:BB over three starts (13.1 innings) with the team.... Yankees' Luke Weaver: Blanks Arizona in Friday's win
Weaver (3-5) picked up the win Friday, allowing four hits over 5.1 scoreless innings in a 7-1 victory over the Diamondbacks. He struck out three without walking a batter. The veteran right-hander tossed 52 of 78 pitches for strikes in his second straight impressive outing since being claimed off waivers from the Mariners. In two starts and 9.1 innings for the Yankees, Weaver has a 2.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB. He lines up for one more start before the end of the regular season, on the road next week in Toronto.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Luke Weaver: Could get weekend start
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Weaver could start a game this weekend in Pittsburgh, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Weaver was claimed off waivers from the Mariners on Tuesday and officially joined the Yankees' active roster for the second half of Thursday's doubleheader in Boston. The 30-year-old right-hander has struggled to a 6.77 ERA in 110.1 major-league innings this season and should probably be ignored in the majority of fantasy leagues, regardless of his role.... Yankees' Luke Weaver: Lands with Yankees
Weaver was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Tuesday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Weaver had been designated for assignment by the Mariners over the weekend. The right-hander has posted a 6.77 ERA and 93:37 K:BB over 110.1 innings covering 22 starts and four relief appearances in 2023 for the Reds and Mariners. It's not clear at this point whether the Yankees plan to use him as a starter or reliever, but he's almost surely not going to have any fantasy value in either role.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Designated for assignment
Weaver was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Sunday. Weaver gave up four earned runs over 4.1 innings of bulk relief Saturday against the Rays and has now been pushed off the 40-man roster. The 30-year-old right-hander carries an ugly 6.77 ERA in 110.1 total major-league innings this season between Cincinnati and Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Shaky in bulk relief role
Weaver allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over 4.1 innings Saturday against the Rays. The 30-year-old served in bulk relief Saturday after Trent Thornton completed the first two innings as Seattle's opener. Weaver inherited a 4-1 advantage, but surrendered two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh to cough up the lead. He has primarily worked out of the bullpen since signing with the Mariners on Aug. 22, posting a 6.08 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB across five appearances (13.1 innings).... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Working as bulk pitcher Saturday
Weaver will serve as the Mariners' bulk reliever Saturday against the Rays, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Seattle will use several different pitchers during the game, but Weaver should be able to offer 60-plus pitches at some point. The 30-year-old right-hander has primarily been a multi-inning bullpen arm for the Mariners since they signed him to a major-league deal in late August, but he threw 70 pitches in a spot start last week versus the Athletics.... Mariners' Luke Weaver: Struggles in spot start
Weaver (2-5) allowed three runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Athletics. He did not strike out or walk a batter. Weaver got the nod on short notice after George Kirby (illness) was scratched from Tuesday's start. The Mariners' offense was rather listless, accumulating four hits and six walks but generating just one run in support of Weaver in his third appearance and first start with the team. In 2023, the right-hander has a 6.77 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 90:34 K:BB over 103.2 innings between the Mariners and the Reds. Barring any other issues with Seattle's usual starters, Weaver will likely return to a long-relief role going forward.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Starting Tuesday
Weaver will start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. George Kirby was originally slated to start Tuesday's contest but was scratched due to an illness, allowing Weaver to make his first start as a Mariner. Weaver accumulated a 6.87 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 97 innings as a starter with Cincinnati, but he's been much more effective since signing with Seattle last week.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Tabbed for long-relief role
Weaver, who signed a major-league deal with the Mariners on Tuesday, will work in a long-relief role out of the bullpen, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. With Emerson Hancock (shoulder) done for the year, Weaver would likely be the next man up if the Mariners need a spot starter, but there aren't any plans to go to a six-man rotation. He had a 5.57 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 21 innings over his last five outings for the Reds before they released him last week.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Luke Weaver: Signed by Mariners
Weaver was signed by the Mariners to a major-league contract and was added to the active roster Tuesday. Weaver was released by the Reds after he allowed four runs in two of his last three starts. Following the All-Star break, his ERA rose as high as 7.22 and currently sits at 6.87. The signing comes the same day Emerson Hancock was moved to the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. The Mariners had planned on operating with a six-man rotation prior to Hancock's injury, so Weaver could slot into that spot or work as a long man out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Luke Weaver: Dropped by Reds
The Reds released Weaver on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Weaver was designated for assignment Wednesday after putting up a 6.87 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 97 innings across 21 starts, and he'll now look to secure a spot with another organization. Weaver's poor MLB track record might keep him from contributing in the majors, but he figures to have a decent shot at landing a minor-league deal elsewhere.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Luke Weaver: Cut from 40-man roster
Weaver was designated for assignment by the Reds on Wednesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The Reds gave Weaver 21 starts this season even as he posted a 6.87 ERA. He will likely clear waivers and can elect free agency once that happens. Hunter Greene (hip) is expected to be ready to rejoin Cincinnati's rotation the next time Weaver's turn comes up this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Luke Weaver: Coughs up four runs
Weaver yielded four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings during a Game 2 win in Sunday's doubleheader against Pittsburgh. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision. The Pirates greeted Weaver with two runs in the first inning and he never really settled in Sunday. He's failed to complete at least five innings in six of his last seven starts, including his last three. During that stretch, he's produced a 7.24 ERA, driving his season number up to 6.87 through 97 frames. Weaver's next outing is projected to be at home against Toronto.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Luke Weaver: Lasts 4.1 innings in no-decision
Weaver did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing a run on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins. He struck out six. Weaver wasn't bad Tuesday, though he was only able to make it through 4.1 innings on 89 pitches. The 29-year-old right-hander's made it through five innings just twice in his last 12 starts -- he's posted an ugly 7.97 ERA over that span (49.2 innings). Weaver is now 2-4 this season with a 6.75 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 78:33 K:BB across 20 starts (93.1 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Pirates in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Luke Weaver: Can't contain Cubs
Weaver (2-4) took the loss against the Cubs on Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five batters over three-plus innings. Weaver's wildness was largely to blame for his poor outing, as he threw only 46 of 83 pitches for a strike and tied a season high with four free passes. Those four walks came in a span of five batters in the third frame, with the latter two each forcing in a run. Weaver was allowed to close out that inning but was given the hook after allowing a single to the first batter he faced in the fourth. The right-hander was solid in a quality start against the Dodgers his last time out, but he's been otherwise awful of late -- Thursday was the fourth time in his last five outings that he's given up at least three earned runs while going four of fewer frames. Weaver's season ERA now sits at an ugly 6.98, and it's fair to wonder if he'll be long for the rotation with Hunter Greene (hip) and Nick Lodolo (lower leg) both expected to return later this month....
