Covey dropped to 1-2 after giving up two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. With Matt Strahm working as the Phillies' opening pitcher on the night, Covey looked like a candidate to serve as a bulk reliever. However, manager Rob Thomson instead treated the series opener as more of a bullpen day, as five pitchers were used to cover eight innings. Since limiting this same Diamondbacks squad to one run over five innings in a starting role May 23, Covey has been used in relief in each of his last four appearances and hasn't covered more than two innings on any occasion. The Phillies are still running out a four-man rotation at the moment, but Covey doesn't look as though he'll be the clear-cut choice to pitch on days that a fifth starter is needed.... See More ... Phillies' Dylan Covey: Chased in first inning
Covey (0-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits Sunday. He recorded two outs and took a loss against Atlanta. It was a nightmare outing for Covey as he was taken deep twice and coughed up seven total runs without making it out of the first inning. He gave up just three runs over nine innings in his first two MLB outings this season, but Sunday's meltdown shot his ERA up to 7.45. It's unclear if the Phillies will give the 31-year-old righty another turn in the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Dylan Covey: Starting Sunday
Covey will start Sunday against Atlanta, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Covey was solid in his Phillies debut Tuesday, surrendering just one run through five innings as a bulk reliever while striking out six batters. His performance has earned him a promotion into Philadelphia's rotation, and another strong performance could ensure he remains there.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Dylan Covey: Solid outing as bulk reliever
Covey didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over five relief innings. He struck out six. After Matt Strahm worked two innings as the opener and put the Phillies in a 2-1 hole, Covey entered the game and gave his team a chance to mount a comeback, tossing 55 of 91 pitches for strikes and exiting with the score tied 3-3. The right-hander has been solid in two appearances as a bulk reliever so far this season, although he doesn't yet have a decision to show for it. Covey will likely continue filling this role for the time being as the Phillies try to patch together the back of their rotation in the wake of Bailey Falter's demotion.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Dylan Covey: Primed to be primary pitcher
Covey is set to be the primary pitcher in Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Covey was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Saturday, and he is on track to make his appearance with his new club a few days later, as Matt Stahm will open Tuesday's contest with Covey slated to follow him. Covey tossed 63 pitches in a game with the Dodgers last week and at least 72 pitches in all seven minor-league games he appeared in earlier this season, so there should not be a major limitation on his workload.... Dodgers' Dylan Covey: Designated for assignment
The Dodgers designated Covey for assignment Thursday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. One day after pitching in the majors for the first time since 2020, Covey has once again been cast off the Dodgers' 40-man roster. The 31-year-old righty holds a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 32 innings in Triple-A this season. It's possible Covey gets claimed by a team in search of a multi-inning reliever, but his career 6.54 ERA in the majors lowers his chances.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Dylan Covey: Tosses four frames in debut
Covey did not factor in the decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three batters over four innings. After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, Covey was pressed into early action when Dustin May was removed after one inning due to an elbow injury. Covey helped ease the strain on Los Angeles' bullpen with four decent frames, giving up a pair of solo homers but otherwise keeping Minnesota from scoring. The right-hander got a big boost in the sixth when Victor Gonzalez inherited his bases-loaded, no-out jam and managed to keep the Twins from pushing any runs across the plate. Covey had been working as a starter in the minors, helping him manage Wednesday's unexpectedly large workload. It stands to reason that he'll be held out for at least a few days since he tossed 63 pitches in the outing.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Dylan Covey: Called up from Triple-A
The Dodgers selected Covey's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Covey has made seven appearances for Oklahoma City in 2023, logging a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 32 innings. The right-hander will provide a fresh arm for the Dodgers' bullpen with the ability to work multiple innings.... See More ... See Less

Scott Lauber@ScottLauber1H agoA point of clarification from Elias: The #Phillies can lock up a wild card today with a win and a loss by either the Marlins OR Cubs because they own the tiebreaker over Chicago. But regardless of how the Marlins and Cubs do today, the Phillies must win to clinch.

Scott Lauber@ScottLauber16H ago#Phillies 7, Mets 5: Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm homered. Zack Wheeler went seven innings. Jose Alvarado saved it. Magic number is 2, pending Marlins-Brewers outcome. Nice of Tropical Storm Ophelia to let them squeeze it in.

Matt Gelb@MattGelb17H agoPhillies win. José Alvarado with another save. They could clinch a postseason spot tomorrow -- if they play. We think.

Matt Gelb@MattGelb18H agoBryce Harper has three of the four hardest-hit balls in this game. He hit one so hard off the facing of the second deck that it shot back onto the field. Phillies lead, 6-2.

Scott Lauber@ScottLauber21H agoOne reason why it’s important to #Phillies to squeeze in a game today: They plan to flip Zack Wheeler’s and Taijuan Walker’s spots in final turn through the rotation. After today, Wheeler would pitch Thursday, lining him up for Game 1 of wild-card series on normal rest on 10/3.
