Jeremy Hellickson: Announces retirement
Hellickson (shoulder) announced his retirement from professional baseball Friday, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports.
The veteran right-hander returned to the mound in September after missing most of the season with a shoulder injury, but he'll opt to retire after suffering a setback in January that would have necessitated surgery. Hellickson had a 10-year career spanning stints with the Rays, Diamondbacks, Phillies, Orioles and Nationals, and he earned AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. He had a career 4.13 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 929 strikeouts and 76-75 record in 232 games.

Jeremy Hellickson: Suffers setback
Hellickson suffered a shoulder setback and is unlikely to pitch this season, Craig Mish of FNTSY Sports Radio reports.
The 10-year veteran has been limited by injuries to just 130.1 innings over the last two seasons combined. He didn't look good in his 39 frames for the Nationals last season, struggling to a 6.23 ERA and a 10.9 percent walk rate. He hit the injured list in late May due to a shoulder strain and never returned to big-league action. With the issue worsening to the point that his 2020 campaign is already in doubt, it's possible the 32-year-old has already thrown his final major-league pitch.

Nationals' Jeremy Hellickson: Returns from 60-day IL
Hellickson (shoulder) was activated off the 60-day injured list Sunday.
Hellickson hasn't seen major-league action since going down with shoulder tendinitis in mid-May, but he'll rejoin the Nationals for the stretch run. According to Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports, Joe Ross will remain in the starting rotation to pitch Monday against the Mets, meaning Hellickson should work out of the bullpen.

Nationals' Jeremy Hellickson: Makes first rehab appearance
Hellickson (shoulder) tossed two scoreless innings Wednesday in a rehab appearance for the Nationals' rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate. He gave up a base hit and struck out two in the 12-pitch outing.
After completing a simulated game last week, Hellickson received the green light to make his first appearance at any level of affiliated ball since May 19. The lengthy layoff means that Hellickson will require multiple minor-league starts to build up his pitch count in preparation for a potential return to the Washington rotation in late August or early September. If healthy, the 32-year-old could represent an upgrade over current back-end starters Joe Ross and Erick Fedde.

Hellickson (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
Hellickson came away from his third bullpen session Sunday with no issues, clearing the way for him to face live hitters for the first time since landing on the injured list in May. While this is a step in the right direction for Hellickson, the right-hander is a ways away from a return, as he still needs to build his arm back up.

Helickson has been battling the pain all season but made it until May 21 before landing on the injured list. The injection reportedly had the desired effect, but he remains shut down from baseball activity. He could be cleared to play catch Monday.

Hellickson (2-3) ceded three runs on four hits and three walks in three innings to take the loss Sunday against the Cubs. He struck out one batter while throwing only 30 of his 64 pitches for strikes.
Hellickson displayed little command or control on the evening, issuing at least three free passes for the third straight start and serving up a home run in his sixth consecutive outing. The 32-year-old is sitting on a 6.23 ERA and 1.72 WHIP through 39 innings this season and could be in jeopardy of losing his rotation spot if he turns in another stinker during his upcoming turn against the lowly Marlins next weekend.

Hellickson (2-2) allowed five earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Mets.
Hellickson allowed four of the first six batters he faced to reach base, culminating in a grand slam by Wilson Ramos. Despite the big blow, he managed to rebound and allow only one earned run across his next four innings of work, salvaging a more respectable line. Overall, Hellickson continues to get crushed by walks and home runs -- he's allowed 4.3 BB/9 and 2.0 HR/9 this season -- making him an extremely risky proposition from start to start. He'll likely have another tough matchup in his next outing, currently scheduled for Sunday against the Cubs.

Nationals' Jeremy Hellickson: Gives up two more homers
Hellickson (2-1) allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks across four innings in a loss to the Brewers on Wednesday.
He tossed up two home runs in the first two innings, so Hellickson was at fault too, but an error led to three unearned runs charged to his record. Hellickson has allowed seven home runs in seven outings, so while opponents are hitting .287 against him, the 2.0 HR/9 is hurting him most. Hellickson owns a 5.52 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with 26 strikeouts in 31 innings, but he has managed to post a 2-1 record. He will start again at home against the Mets on Tuesday.

Nationals' Jeremy Hellickson: Fans nine in no-decision
Hellickson didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine across 5.1 innings.
Hellickson settled in nicely after allowing a first-inning homer to Jean Segura, retiring 15 of the next 17 batters -- a season-high nine via strikeout -- before surrendering a single to Segura with one out in the sixth inning and subsequently getting the hook. The right-hander had thrown just 79 pitches, though the decision was made to prevent Hellickson from facing the heart of Philadelphia's order a third time through. Rhys Hoskins ultimately homered off Dan Jennings to bring in Segura, leaving Hellickson with two earned runs on the day. Hellickson will carry a 5.33 ERA into his next start, which will come on the road against the Brewers.
