  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Functions well as opener

Chavez allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over 2.1 scoreless innings Saturday versus Seattle. He did not factor in the decision. Chavez was effective as the opener Saturday, and he recorded the most outs of any Atlanta pitcher while throwing 26 of 42 pitches for strikes. The veteran right-hander has seen some high-leverage work this season with a save and eight holds in 22 appearances. He's maintained a 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 20.1 innings this season, and he's allowed just two runs (one earned) over 10 innings in May.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Starting Saturday vs. Mariners

Chavez will start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Chavez will act as an opener in what will be a bullpen day for Atlanta. The veteran right-hander will not go deep enough to qualify for a win and he shouldn't be streamed for fantasy purposes.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Notches league-leading seventh hold

Chavez struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning Tuesday to record his seventh hold of the season in an 8-1 win over the Padres. Atlanta scored six of its eight runs in the final two frames, erasing a potential save situation, but Chavez still collected his league-leading seventh hold, tying him with the Mets' Brooks Raley. The 39-year-old Chavez has had a remarkable start to the season, posting a 0.00 ERA and 9:1 K:BB through nine innings and 10 appearances, but he's been able to work his way into a high-leverage role in part due to injuries to Raisel Iglesias (shoulder), Collin McHugh (shoulder) and Tyler Matzek (elbow). Once the Atlanta bullpen gets healthier, and Chavez's numbers begin to tumble back down to Earth, he figures to fade back into middle relief.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Collects rare save

Chavez recorded the final out of Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Cardinals to pick up his first save of the season. A.J. Minter had pitched in the first two games of the series while Joe Jimenez has thrown 16 pitches the night before and may not be ready to work back-to-back days after offseason back surgery, so when Collin McHugh allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to create a save situation, it was Chavez who got the call to close things out. It's the 39-year-old right-hander's first save since 2019, and while he's capable of serving in a variety of roles in the Atlanta bullpen, he's unlikely to see consistent high-leverage work. Through four appearances this season, Chavez holds a 0.00 ERA over 3.2 innings with a hold and a 3:0 K:BB in addition to Wednesday's save.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Secures roster spot

Chavez had his contract selected by Atlanta on Thursday. Chavez re-signed with Atlanta on a minor-league deal in November, and he grabbed a spot on the Opening Day roster after giving up four earned runs with a 10:2 K:BB across 8.1 innings during spring training. The veteran right-hander had a 3.76 ERA in 69.1 frames last year and should fill a middle-relief role out of the bullpen in 2023.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Returns to Atlanta

Chavez re-signed with Atlanta on a minor-league deal Saturday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Chavez pitched for three teams in 2022, one of which was Atlanta. All told, he threw 69.1 innings -- nearly exclusively out of the bullpen -- in the majors while maintaining a 3.76 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. While his deal is a minor-league contract, Chavez should have a decent opportunity to earn a spot in the bullpen during spring training.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Back with Atlanta

Atlanta claimed Chavez off waivers from the Angels on Tuesday. Chavez will begin his fourth stint with Atlanta and his second of the season, after he was previously dealt to the Angels in the Aug. 2 deal for reliever Raisel Iglesias. As a 39-year-old right-hander on an expiring deal, Chavez didn't have much long-term appeal for the non-contending Angels, who exposed him to outright waivers over the weekend. The veteran reliever was a key contributor on Atlanta's World Series-winning club in 2021 and has been solid enough in 2022 across three stops, turning in a 3.62 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while striking out 60 batters in 54.2 innings. Chavez is likely to handle a middle-relief role as he returns to Atlanta.

  • Jesse Chavez: Released by Halos

Chavez was released by the Angels on Monday. Chavez was dealt from Atlanta to the Angels ahead of the trade deadline in early August, but he posted a 7.59 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings over 11 relief appearances with his new team. The 39-year-old displayed some potential earlier in the year, so the veteran will be free to seek out other opportunities during the final month of the 2022 campaign.

  • Angels' Jesse Chavez: Blows save, picks up win

Chavez (2-1) gave up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning Friday against the Mariners. He picked up a win while also being charged with a blown save. The Angels ended up winning in 10 innings, with Jimmy Herget getting the save. Ryan Tepera wasn't available, and while Chavez was used in the initial save situation, it seems unlikely that he will get the next save opportunity, given his struggles in this first chance.

  • Angels' Jesse Chavez: Acquired by Angels

Chavez and Tucker Davidson were traded from Atlanta to the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for Raisel Iglesias, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Chavez's role in the deal is presumably to offset some of Iglesias' contract, as the Angels don't have much use for a 38-year-old reliever on an expiring contract in the final two months of a lost season. The veteran righty could potentially find himself with sudden fantasy relevance, however, as his 2.66 ERA and career-best 27.2 percent strikeout rate make him one of the best relievers in a bullpen that's just lost its closer in Iglesias.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Picks up third hold

Chavez walked one and struck out one in one-third of an inning Sunday to record his third hold of the season in an extra-innings loss to the Dodgers. Entering the game with two outs in the seventh inning and a runner on first base, Chavez walked Trayce Thompson before fanning Trea Turner. The right-hander appears to have moved into a higher-leverage role in the Atlanta bullpen, as all three of his holds have come in his last four appearances -- part of a 10-game scoreless streak that has seen Chavez post a 0.89 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB over his last 12.1 innings.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Serves up walkoff homer

Chavez (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as Atlanta fell to the Brewers, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit while only recording one out. Kenley Jansen and Darren O'Day each blew saves in the ninth and 10th innings as Atlanta couldn't put the game away, and after Chavez got the final out of the 10th, he completed the bullpen collapse by serving up a leadoff blast to Keston Hiura in the bottom of the 11th. Chavez remains in a low-leverage role and has yet to record a win, save or hold through 11 appearances, with his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP offering little fantasy value.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Starting Friday

Chavez is starting Friday's game against the Brewers, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The right-hander's first eight appearances of the season have come as a reliever, and he's posted a 2.84 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB in 12.2 innings. However, Chavez will draw the start in Friday's series opener against Milwaukee after Bryce Elder and Kyle Muller were recently demoted. Chavez made just four starts in 2021, so it's possible he moves back to the bullpen following Friday's outing.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Shipped to Atlanta

Chavez was traded from the Cubs to Atlanta on Wednesday in exchange for Sean Newcomb and cash considerations. Chavez signed a split deal with Chicago in March but will now return to Atlanta, where he spent the 2021 campaign. He had a 2.14 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB over 33.2 innings for the reigning champs last year.

  • Cubs' Jesse Chavez: Secures roster spot

Chavez's contract was selected by the Cubs on Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The 38-year-old looked like he might be toast following the 2020 season, as he struggled to a 6.88 ERA that year while posting a 16.9 percent strikeout rate. He bounced back in a big way last season, however, posting a career-best 2.14 ERA in 33.2 innings for Atlanta as his strikeout rate jumped all the way up to a career-high 27.1 percent.

  • Cubs' Jesse Chavez: Earns win Wednesday

Chavez allowed an unearned run across two innings to pick up the win in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Athletics. He gave up two hits and struck out two. The veteran reliever is in camp as a non-roster invitee, though he seems pretty likely to earn a bullpen role. Chavez pitched for the Cubs along with the Rangers back in 2018, when he posted a strong 2.55 ERA across 95.1 innings. He was good with Atlanta last year as well, registering a 2.14 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 36 batters across 33.2 innings. Chavez should slot in somewhere in front of closer Rowan Wick and could see high-leverage work this season.

  • Cubs' Jesse Chavez: Lands with Cubs

Chavez agreed to a contract Sunday with the Cubs, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. He will join the team on a minor-league/split contract, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Though the 38-year-old right-hander will be attending Cubs camp as a non-roster invitee, he's not only a good bet to make the Opening Day roster, but to also fill a prominent role out of the bullpen right away. Chavez proved to be a quality middle-inning option for the World Series champion Atlanta squad in 2021, submitting a 2.14 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 36 over 33.2 innings. He'll give a talent-barren Cubs bullpen a setup option for presumptive closer Rowan Wick after Codi Heuer (elbow) recently underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Effective as opener

Chavez tossed a perfect first inning in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS. He didn't factor into the decision. Chavez stepped in on short notice Wednesday after Huascar Ynoa (shoulder) was scratched, and he required just 11 pitches to get through the first inning. The right-hander still hasn't allowed a run in 4.1 innings across five postseason appearances, and he should be available as a reliever for the remainder of the series following Wednesday's short outing.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Starting Game 4

Chavez will start Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Wednesday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Huascar Ynoa was poised to start Wednesday's bullpen game for Atlanta, but he was a late scratch with shoulder inflammation. Chavez will instead open things up in Game 4, and he has yet to allow an earned run across 3.1 innings this postseason. The 38-year-old is unlikely to pitch much more than an inning before giving way to the likes of Drew Smyly or A.J. Minter, who are more likely to cover multiple frames.

  • Braves' Jesse Chavez: Opening again Sunday

Chavez will start Sunday's game against the Padres, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Chavez will once again serve as an opener with Atlanta employing a bullpen game for the series finale in San Diego. The veteran right-hander has a 2.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings this season, and he's unlikely to pitch much more than an inning Sunday.
