Felix Hernandez wasn't perfect on Tuesday -- giving up a leadoff hit to Jason Kipnis -- but like so many other pitchers on the night, he was more than good enough. Chase Headley, Padres: The San Diego third baseman had left seven runners on base as he hit with a runner on second in the 10th inning of Tuesday's game against the Pirates. And with Will Venable on second, Headley made sure he didn't leave another man on base -- crushing a Daniel McCutchen changeup for a two-run, walk-off home run.
Adam Wainwright, Cardinals: The St. Louis right-hander struck out a season-best 12 batters while throwing his third compete game of the season and his second shutout. In his first season following Tommy John surgery. He's 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA in his last six starts. He's also 12-1 with a 1.44 ERA lifetime against the Astros.
Kevin Youkilis, White Sox: Youkilis may have changed the color of his Sox, but he's still giving the Yankees fits. Youkilis untied Tuesday's game with a fifth-inning grand slam, leading the White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Yankees. It was Youkilis' second grand slam of the season -- his other also coming at U.S. Cellular Field, but when he was a member of the Red Sox.

Ben Zobrist, Rays: The Rays' infielder is an accomplished defensive player, but his 10th inning error on Tuesday was costly. In the 10th inning of a scoreless game, Jeff Francoeur hit a dribbler that Zobrist was able to get to, but his off-balance throw went past first baseman Carlos Pena for an error, allowing Francoeur to move to second. Eric Hosmer's bloop single scored Francoeur and the Royals won, 1-0.
Rickey Romero, Blue Jays: Romero lost his 10th straight decision on Tuesday and is 0-10 with a 7.69 ERA in his last 11 starts. He put himself in a hole Tuesday against the Tigers, walking six in the first two innings, including two free passes with bases loaded to score the first two runs of the game.
Chris Young, Mets: Young was brilliant on the mound -- at least for the first five innings, retiring the first 15 batters he faced against the Rockies on Tuesday. But after two hits to start the sixth, Young's throwing error on Jhoulys Chacin's sacrifice attempt allowed the first run of the game. The Rockies scored four in the inning and went on to win 6-2.
Skaggs debuts: We've already seen Trevor Bauer debut for the Diamondbacks this season, and now left-hander Tyler Skaggs will get his shot. Skaggs, 21, is 9-6 with a 2.87 ERA at Double-A and Triple-A this season. Skaggs will start the first game of a rare doubleheader in Arizona. The split doubleheader was scheduled to break up a stretch of 23 straight days with a game for the Diamondbacks. Arizona will get a day off on Thursday thanks to the doubleheader. 3:40 p.m. ET.
MLB debut for Padre: San Diego lefty Andrew Werner was a non-drafted free agent signed by the Padres 2010. Normally those who aren't drafted and sign are just there to round out the minor-league rosters, but Werner has bucked the odds and will be making his big league debut Wednesday against the Pirates. Werner, 25, was 5-10 with a 3.70 ERA for Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson. 6:35 p.m. ET
Rivalry game: The Dodgers and Giants finish up their three-game set at Dodger Stadium with San Francisco going into the game 1 1/2 games up on their biggest rival. Matt Cain takes the hill for the Giants. Cain earned a no-decision in his only start against the Dodgers this season, allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings on July 27. Dodgers starter Chris Capuano hasn't faced the Giants this season. The two teams still have six games remaining against each other after this series. 10:10 p.m. ET
• Death of Greg Halman: Here's the best thing you will read today. ESPN.com's Wright Thompson writes about the bond between Greg and Jason Halman. Jason Halman killed his older brother in November. Thompson writes about the bond between the two and what led to the killing.
• One-run woes: The Cardinals had no trouble with the Astros on Tuesday, but the team is 13-21 in one-run games. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch digs deep to try to see what's going on. Goold really is one of the best in the business and his blog is a must-read for all baseball fans, not just Cardinals fans.
• Rays show the way: The Tampa Bay bullpen has the second-best ERA and third-best FIP in baseball, despite not throwing a ton of money at their bullpen year after year. The way the Rays have been able to build bullpens year after year is showing that you don't have to spend big money to get big results from your pen. [FanGraphs.com]
• Art of the steal: If you missed it, last night Reds Double-A shortstop Billy Hamilton broke Vince Coleman's stolen base record last night, not only matching Coleman's mark of 145 set in 1982, but exceeding with with four steals Tuesday, giving him 147 on the season. Baseball America's J.J. Cooper has a really good article on the art of the steal.
