Buccaneers' Bryce Hall: Agrees to terms with Tampa Bay

The Buccaneers signed Hall to a one-year deal Friday, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
After spending the first four years of his career with the Jets, the 26-year-old cornerback has found a new home in Tampa Bay. Hall appeared in just nine games (two starts) in 2023, recording five total tackles and defending two passes, including one interception. He's expected to compete for a depth role in the Buccaneers' secondary throughout the offseason.

Coach Robert Saleh said Monday that the team is still deciding between Hall and rookie first-round pick Sauce Gardner for the starting cornerback role across from D.J. Reed (hamstring), Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media reports.
It's encouraging to hear that Hall's still in contention to start after his forgettable Monday Night Football preseason performance against the Falcons. He was caught flat-footed on two crucial plays in the first quarter, allowing Kyle Pitts to run by him for a 52-yard gain on the opening drive before giving up a 13-yard Olamide Zaccheaus touchdown on the following possession. Hall racked up an impressive 16 passes defensed in a starting role for the Jets last season, but New York's decision to sign Reed in free agency and draft Gardner fourth overall suggests the Jets likely view Hall as a long-term backup.

Hall was initially viewed as a first-round talent in the 2020 NFL Draft but slipped to the fifth round after a major ankle injury. After taking some time to get back up to speed as a rookie, Hall took a major step forward in his second season, tying the likes of Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard for sixth league-wide with 16 passes defensed. While Hall probably lacks the ball skills to become a truly elite cornerback, he's already established himself as a legitimate starter at the position heading into his third NFL season.

Hall played well in coverage and in run support, though the Jets fell apart defensively after taking a 24-10 lead in the third quarter. The second-year cornerback out of Virginia has blossomed into a promising young starter on the outside for New York. Hall set a new single-game high with nine tackles and brought his season tackle total to 75 through 16 games. He's added 16 passes defensed.

Hall landed on the COVID list Monday after testing positive but was able to clear the league protocols relatively quickly. The 24-year-old has played at least 91 percent of the defensive snaps in all 15 games this season and has 66 tackles (55 solo), a half-sack and 14 passes defensed.
