Texas wide receiver Mike Davis decided to skip his senior season and declare for the NFL draft, according to an earlier report on Thursday from ESPN's Joe Schad, but a later report by Schad now has Davis undecided on his decision.
"I still might leave but I'm not sure now," Davis said. As of right now I really don't know. I have options because I haven't signed with an agent."
Davis had a productive season for the Longhorns in 2012, catching 57 passes for a team-leading 939 yard and seven touchdowns. Although the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is projected by the NFL as no better than a third-round pick, he seemed intent on testing the draft waters anyway.
"This is about my family and finances," Davis said. "It's a good time to take it to the next level. I enjoyed my time playing for Texas and it meant a lot to me."
Maybe it meant a lot more than he said, because he's now reconsidering.
The former four-star recruit from the Dallas area caught 149 passes in his three years in Austin.
If Davis does leave, it will hurt in the short run for Texas. Next season, the Longhorns return rising junior Jaxon Shipley, who led the team in receptions with 59, and not much else in the receiving corps, which means youngsters Cayleb Jones and Kendall Sanders (who each caught two passes as freshmen) will need to step up.
