Florida coach Will Muschamp got good news Thursday evening when cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III picked the Gators over dozens of offers from all over the nation.

Hargreaves is ranked as the top cornerback in the nation by MaxPreps.com, and adds to the list of incredible athletes the Gators have signed in the secondary in recent years.

Though the Gators are young in the secondary heading into 2012, the situation could play itself out well for Hargreaves once he shows up on campus in 2013. The current cornerback core of Cody Riggs, Marcus Roberson, Jeremy Brown, Loucheiz Purifoy and Jaylen Watkins will all either be a junior, a senior or perhaps gone to the NFL when Hargreaves is a freshman. That sets him up as a projected starter by his sophomore year in Gainesville.

There’s no such thing as a can’t-miss prospect in recruiting, but Hargreaves comes pretty close. He’s got good size at 5-11 and 185 pounds, his dad is an assistant coach at USF, he’s got great speed and athleticism and he’s a consensus top-10 player in the nation according to multiple recruiting services.

Overall, it’s an excellent pickup for Muschamp and the Gators.
