Need to know

#Collegekickers strikes in Week 1

The kicking game in college football can be an adventure. #Collegekickers made its first real arrival in Week 1 of the season in a 23-20 win for Boston College over Northern Illinois. Huskies kicker Christian Hagan, who was 2 of 2 on the night, missed a 39-yarder with 21 seconds remaining. Whether the ball was tipped or Hagan didn't get all of it, the kick was a knuckle ball that bounced off the cross bar.

Wisconsin rolls after falling behind early to Utah State

Wisconsin's early 10-0 deficit to Utah State was easily the biggest surprise of the day. Unlike other slow starts by South Florida, Ohio State and Washington, the Badgers were playing at home. But Paul Chryst's team responded by tying the game within the final two minutes of the first half. Wisconsin then went on a monster run with 49 second-half points, capping off a stunning 59-0 run. Wisconsin was simply too good and too overpowering to stay down forever. Tight end Troy Fumagalli eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark, leading all pass-catchers and scoring a touchdown.

Washington steps on the gas en route to win at Rutgers

It wasn't as crisp as coach Chris Petersen probably hoped, but No. 8 Washington finally got things cranking in the second half to top Rutgers 30-14. This after sputtering out of the gates and only leading the Scarlet Knights by three at the half despite being 28.5-point favorites at kickoff. Rutgers was aggressive and hit quarterback Jake Browning hard early, but Washington fans shouldn't panic. Once Browning got things cranking, they looked exactly like the team that won the Pac-12 and made the College Football Playoff a year ago. Browning finished the day 17-of-30 passing for 284 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Myles Gaskin totaled 138 yards (59 rush, 79 pass).

Without suspended All-American linebacker Azeem Victor, the Huskies allowed just 297 yards to a Rutgers offense that featured Louisville transfer quarterback Kyle Bolin, Miami transfer running back Gus Edwards and wide receiver Janarion Grant -- who's back from injury. Yeah, it's "Rutgers," and typically the Scarlet Knights are the punchline to a bad joke. This crew felt a bit more threatening, and Washington held them in check.

Colorado's defense shows up in win over Colorado State

So much for Colorado State's high-powered offense from Week Zero. The Rams mustered just a field goal in a 17-3 loss to Colorado. The Buffs had to replace a majority of its defensive starters from a season ago on a unit that was one of the Pac-12's best. Plus, defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt left to take the same job at Oregon. And yet, Colorado's put up a heck of a stat line. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention there were multiple controversial officiating calls in this game, however, with Colorado being the ultimate benefactor. The Rams had two touchdowns called back by penalties on Friday night along with several other debilitating penalties. In all, 17 flags were thrown on the evening.

FAU and Navy delayed by weather

What, you expected Lane Kiffin's debut at Florida Atlantic to be completely drama-free? The Owls' opener against Navy was delayed multiple times due to lightning strikes in the area. The first delay took place between the third and fourth quarters when the Midshipmen were up 35-13. After about an hour, the game resumed and each side scored a quick touchdown before yet another weather delay at 42-19. Then, during that delay, the game was pushed back again. It restarted for the last time at 1:15 a.m.

Florida Atlantic jumped out to a 10-7 lead on Navy in the second quarter and did it quite dramatically. Daniel Parr hit Willie Wright for a 95-yard touchdown to give the Owls a brief lead on the Midshipmen, marking the first TD of the Lane Kiffin era in Boca Raton. Navy came right back with a seven-play touchdown drive to grab the lead back late in the second quarter and led by more than 20 prior to the first extended lightning delay.

Why bother?

Army hosted Fordham in West Point, New York, and was decidedly one-dimensional. The Black Knights had zero passing yards at the half but built a 34-6 lead on the Rams. Why no passing yards? Because the triple-option attack of coach Jeff Monken hadn't bothered trying to throw the ball. Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw was precisely 0-for-0 for 0 yards, though he did attempt two passes later on, completing zero. Bradshaw did have two rushing touchdowns, including this 71-yarder. Old school football at its best.

He's baaaaaack

You didn't expect Lane Kiffin to be quiet in his first game back as a head coach, did you? Of course he isn't.

In true Kiffin form, he'll rock Yeezy Boost 350's in the home-opener vs. Navy in Boca Raton.
