Panthers' Danick Martel: Acquired from in-state rivals
Martel was brought in via trade by the Panthers from the Lightning on Thursday in exchange for Anthony Greco.
Martel hasn't appeared in an NHL game for the Lightning this season, though he did log nine games with Tampa Bay back in 2018-19 in which he tallied two helpers, 12 hits and 16 shots. The center figures to remain in the minors with AHL Springfield for the most of the rest of the year but could be among the Black Aces call-ups.

Martel signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Lightning on Thursday, Joe Smith of The Athletic reports.
Martel sat as a healthy scratch more often than not in 2018-19, finishing the campaign with two assists in nine appearances with the big club. He'll likely have a similar role with the Lightning in 2019-20, so there's no reason for fantasy owners to concern themselves with his status.

Martel dressed for three straight games right before Christmas after being a healthy scratch for the previous five weeks.
He even picked up his first NHL point against Vancouver on Thursday night. And despite playing just 6 minutes, 57 seconds, Martel was the most hated man in the building because of his abrasive play (four PIM). His ice time was just over nine minutes in the other two games, but he produced no points. Martel has just that one point in four games this season, so don't look here for fantasy production.

Martel has only seen ice time in one contest -- Nov. 10 against the Sens. He laid three hits and fired the same number of shots in 12:06. The Bolts tend to favor small forwards, so Martel has a shot with them. But they already have a lot of smaller guys on the ice right now.

Martel is waiting to make his Lightning debut. The small, electric winger is coming off a 25-goal, 40-point season (59 games) with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. Martel was waived by the Flyers on Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Martel is only 5-foot-8 and 162 pounds as a 23-year-old, but the kid has wheels and he's been a force for AHL Lehigh Valley for three years running. Technically, he's been associated with that minor-league club for parts of four seasons, adding 68 goals and 52 assists over 199 games. There's a four-game cup of coffee at the top level on his resume as well, but Martel is clearly not in the NHL mix at this point in time.

Lightning's Danick Martel: Claimed by Lightning
Martel was claimed off waivers by the Lightning on Saturday, Elliotte Freedman of Sportsnet.ca reports.
It makes sense that Tampa Bay would take a chance on the diminutive center, given the success the franchise has seen from Martin St. Louis and, more recently, Tyler Johnson. Cracking the team's NHL roster will be tough, but the accomplished AHL scorer could do it if Martel's able to showcase that scoring touch at the highest level.

Martel appears to be back on track after suffering a broken jaw in January. While the Flyers could promote the 23-year-old down the road, he figures to be a long shot for a postseason call-up. Flyers' Danick Martel: Suffers broken jaw
Martel broke his jaw during a rough collision with Colby Williams during a 2-1 victory against AHL Hershey on Saturday, official AHL Lehigh Valley radio announcer Bob Rotruck reports.
During the second period, Martel was trying to move up the ice with the puck, when Williams left his feet and made direct contact to his head and upper body, which resulted in an ejection and 10-minute match penalty. Martel had surgery Sunday for the injury and is expected to make a full recovery, though an exact timetable for his return wasn't revealed. The 23-year-old has been dynamic in the AHL this season with 26 points (27 goals, nine assists) in 36 games, but wasn't able to muster a point during his four-game stint with the Flyers.

Martel was called up from AHL Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.
The recall is the first of Martel's career and, with Matt Read sent down in a corresponding move, will potentially give him the opportunity to see his first NHL action. The 22-year-old has enjoyed a nice season in the minors this year, racking up 14 goals and 19 total points in 17 games for the Phantoms, so it'll be worth seeing if he can properly adjust to the speed of the game at the top level.
