Speed agreed on a two-year contract to remain with the Colts on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Indianpolis' fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has steadily increased his production every season, and Speed set a career high with 63 tackles in 2022 while also notching the first sack of his career. Speed will likely be slated for a similar part-time role on the Indianapolis defense in 2023.... See More ... See Less

Colts' E.J. Speed: Seven stops in MNF
Speed recorded seven tackles (three solo) during Monday's 24-17 loss to the Steelers. Speed tied cornerback Stephon Gilmore for the Colts' third-most tackles against Pittsburgh. While he only played 18 of his 39 snaps on defense Week 12, the linebacker still notched six defensive stops, including five on just one drive in the second quarter. Speed has now set a new career high for tackles (43) while primarily playing on special teams over 12 games. However, he should continue playing as a primary reserve behind starting linebackers Bobby Okereke and Zaire Franklin against Dallas this coming Sunday.... See More ... See Less -
Colts' E.J. Speed: Will play Sunday
Speed (ankle) is active Sunday against the Patriots, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. Speed was unable to practice Friday, but he's good to go Sunday against New England. His ability to suit up will bolster the team's depth at linebacker.... See More ... See Less -
Colts' E.J. Speed: Questionable for Week 9 at Patriots
Speed (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at New England. Speed did not practice Friday after he was a full participant Wednesday and then downgraded to limited participation Thursday, so he's trending in the wrong direction ahead of Sunday. If he indeed sits out at the Patriots, Indianapolis would be left without much depth at linebacker behind Zaire Franklin, Bobby Okereke and Shaquille Leonard.... See More ... See Less -
Colts' E.J. Speed: Gets start in season opener
Speed started at weak-side linebacker and had a sack and seven total tackles in Sunday's overtime tie at Houston. Speed moved into a starting role with Shaquille Leonard out after back surgery and had a strong game, making several big plays. He played on 38 of the defense's 70 snaps, as he came off in nickel and dime packages. It's not clear when Leonard may return, so Speed could continue to get a larger workload next week at Jacksonville.... See More ... See Less -
Colts' E.J. Speed: Racks up nine tackles
Speed posted nine tackles (eight solo) and a pass breakup in Saturday's 22-16 win over the Cardinals. Darius Leonard tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, so Speed was thrust into a starting role with little notice. Speed -- a 2019 fifth-round pick -- excelled, playing every defensive snap and tying for the team lead in tackles. Leonard will miss this Sunday's game against the Raiders because he's unvaccinated, so Speed will get another chance to start. He should be considered a solid IDP option in fantasy championships.... Colts' E.J. Speed: Practicing again
Speed (knee) returned to practice Monday, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. The third-year linebacker appears to be healthy after hyper-extending his knee in practice Aug. 13. Speed made a speedy recovery and should be in the mix for a depth position with the Colts linebacking corps.... See More ... See Less

Andrew Walker@AWalkerColts01/01/1970A week after the Colts blocked a punt that led to a return touchdown, E.J. Speed nearly blocks another. Still, a less-than-ideal 36-yard punt gives the Colts the ball at their 30-yard line.
