Head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Waletzko (shoulder) is "knocking [his rehab] out of the park," Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Cowboys' Matt Waletzko: Headed for extended absence
Waletzko (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Lions, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Waletzko suffered a subluxation in his left shoulder during Friday's practice, marking the third time he suffered the injury in the last calendar year. As a result, he's been ruled out for Dallas' matchup against the Lions and is also expected to miss the rest of the season. Waletzko served primarily as depth along the Cowboys' offensive line, so his absence isn't likely to factor significantly into the team's success going forward.

Cowboys' Matt Waletzko: Back at practice Tuesday
Waletzko returned to practice for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury early on in training camp, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Waletzko will eventually require surgery to address his recurring shoulder issue, which he plans to forego until after this coming regular season. Therefore, his return to on-field activities just under three weeks out from the start of his rookie campaign is an encouraging sign for the fifth-round pick's availability this season.

Cowboys' Matt Waletzko: Postponing surgery
Waletzko will need surgery at some point to address recurring shoulder issues, but he's hoping he can put it off until next offseason, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
The Cowboys are very thin at offensive tackle, which had pushed Waletzko into a much bigger role than expected during offseason work before he suffered his latest shoulder injury in late July. The 2022 fifth-round pick out of North Dakota has responded well to rest and rehab, however, so the plan right now appears to be for him to make the initial 53-man roster before being placed on IR to begin the regular season. That would leave the door open for Waletzko to see snaps later in the year as a backup swing tackle, assuming he's able to stay healthy.

It's unclear at this time what precisely is holding Waletzko back. As the 2022 fifth-round pick works to return to the practice field, second-year tackle Josh Ball and rookie UDFA Amon Simon should be in line for increased reps in camp.
