Lower-body injuries limited the 2015 fourth-round pick in his first two seasons with the 49ers, but he appears to be healthy in camp for the first time in his career. Smelter remains fairly low on the receiver depth chart, but he could work his way up if he continues to show improvement this preseason. The 25-year-old is one of the few big-bodied wideouts (6-foot-2, 227 pounds) on the roster, which could work in his favor should one of San Francisco's starters go down to injury.

The 2015 fourth-round pick finally got his first NFL catch in Week 17 of the 2016 season. The opportunity was there for Smelter this season, but a preseason injury delayed his debut. He will still be under team control next season, so a clean bill of health could lead to opportunity on a team devoid of talent on the outside, but expectations will be low for the reclamation project.

This news comes as a bit of a surprise considering Smelter's return to practice this week and his participation during pregame warmups. A setback with his injured hamstring hasn't been reported, but that is a likely reason he was held out of Thursday's preseason finale. Even with a depleted receiving corps, Smelter's stance with the 49ers remains in question due to his lack of activity this preseason. If he survives Saturday's roster cuts, then there is a chance he could work his way up the depth chart and become a fantasy relevant player at some point this season.

Smelter -- who has missed all three preseason games with a hamstring injury -- returned to practice and could make an appearance in the 49ers' final preseason game against the Chargers on Thursday. The 2015 fourth-round pick was recovering from a torn ACL and had a great opportunity to carve out a significant role during training camp, but a hamstring injury derailed that opportunity. It isn't inconceivable for Smelter to have a strong showing in Thursday's preseason finale and rocket up the depth chart given how depleted the 49ers' receiving corps is. A more likely scenario would be Smelter making the team as a backup and earning playing time later in the season after he gets his feet wet with his first NFL action in a reserve role.
