  • Andre Holmes: Let go by Denver

Holmes (ankle) was released by the Broncos on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

The Broncos acquired Holmes via waivers after he was cut by the Bills in early December. The veteran wideout went on to appear in three games with Denver, hauling in his lone target during that span for a five-yard reception before moving to injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain. Holmes should be back to full strength by the time teams reconvene for OTAs, but it's unlikely he'll have a robust market as he heads into free agency. As a 30-year-old wideout who has topped out at 47 receptions, 693 yards and four touchdowns during any of his seven seasons, Holmes may have to wait until some bigger names at the position come off the board before landing a depth role with a team.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Quiet in time with Denver

Holmes caught his lone target as a Broncos, a gain of five yards, and caught 12 of 23 targets as a Buffalo Bill, gaining 157 yards, during 2018.

Holmes was on the Broncos' roster for three games and was targeted just once before heading to injured reserve with an ankle injury. His future with the team is unclear. On one hand, he's a big-bodied veteran option who counts just $1.45 million against the cap in 2019. On the other, his signing was based on his familiarity with offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave's scheme, and Musgrave is likely out following the firing of head coach Vance Joseph. Even if Holmes stays on in 2019, he's likely little more than a special teams contributor and depth option --- outside of maybe Emmanuel Sanders, the Broncos figure to look to develop their young, talented targets in 2019.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Moves to injured reserve

Holmes (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Friday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

The move means little in regards to the severity of Holmes' left high-ankle sprain, simply that he would have been ruled out for Sunday's season finale against the Chargers. The 30-year-old may need some time to make a full recovery, but should be ready for offseason OTAs in the spring.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Not practicing this week

Holmes (ankle) wasn't taking part in the portion of Thursday's practice that was open to the media, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Holmes' inability to practice for the second straight day adds further credence to the report Mike Klis of 9News Denver issued Wednesday, wherein the wideout was revealed to be dealing with a high-ankle sprain that will likely keep him sidelined for the season finale against the Chargers. The Broncos will officially reveal Holmes' odds of playing in that contest or rule him out entirely when the team releases its final practice report Friday.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Likely done for season

Holmes is dealing with a high left ankle sprain and is unlikely to suit up in Sunday's season finale against the Chargers, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Holmes isn't a significant part of the Denver passing game, but his likely absence for Week 17 represents yet another blow to a decimated receiver room that has already lost Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles) and Demaryius Thomas (traded to the Texans) for the season. With Holmes out of the mix for Sunday, River Cracraft is in line to serve as the Broncos' No. 4 wideout.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: MRI upcoming

Holmes will undergo an MRI on his left ankle Tuesday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Holmes was spotted limping in the locker room following Monday's game against Oakland. He was unable to log any counting stats during the Week 16 loss.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Has one catch in Denver debut

Holmes caught his only target for a five-yard gain during Saturday's 17-16 loss to Cleveland.

Holmes got into the action early in the second quarter, helping convert a second-and-short to set up a Brandon McManus field goal. Holmes garnered just eight offensive snaps on Saturday and, though that could certainly increase with his prior familiarity with Bill Musgrave's attack, that probably wouldn't make sense. Denver has nothing much to play for and should see what it has in first-year targets Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick in these final two games of the season, both against division rivals -- Oakland and Los Angeles -- with solid pass defenses.

  • Broncos' Andre Holmes: Lands with Denver

The Broncos claimed Holmes off waivers Wednesday, Zac Stevens of BSNDenver.com reports.

Holmes didn't take long to land elsewhere after the Bills waived him and fellow wideout Kelvin Benjamin a day earlier. The veteran will give the Broncos some added depth and experience in the wake of top receiver Emmanuel Sanders sustaining a torn Achilles' tendon during Wednesday's practice, which will likely spell an end to his season. Beyond Holmes, the team's other healthy options at the position are Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton, Tim Patrick and River Cracraft.

  • Andre Holmes: Let go by Buffalo

    The Bills have released Holmes.

The team also released Kelvin Benjamin on Tuesday, with the moves thinning out the Bills' wideout depth, but paving the way for younger and faster players to get more snaps. In 12 games this season, Holmes caught 12 passes for 157 yards. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, the 30-year-old brings good size to the table, but it's still hard to imagine him suddenly emerging as a red-zone threat down the stretch, even if he catches on with a new team in short order.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Targeted once in big win

Holmes caught his lone target for 21 yards during Sunday's 41-10 win over the Jets.

Sunday was far and away Buffalo's biggest offensive outpouring of the season, but it didn't do much for Holmes, who has now caught one or no passes in five of his last six games. The statuesque target remains a good deep threat who might have the advantage of catching passes from big-armed rookie Josh Allen (elbow) following the bye. That's where the good news ends. Week 12 brings a Jacksonville defense giving up just 201 passing yards per game, the best in the league.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Active Sunday vs. Jets

Holmes (neck) is active for Sunday's contest against the Jets.

Holmes was a full participant at practice Thursday and Friday, so his active status isn't very surprising. He'll likely see his usual role as a depth wideout for Buffalo.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Questionable for Week 10

Holmes (neck) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets.

Holmes began the week as a limited practice participant but put in full sessions Thursday and Friday, so he would appear on track to play Sunday. The 30-year-old has more than two receptions in only one game this season and should take up his usual depth role in the Bills' struggling passing game.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Practicing in full

Holmes (neck) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.

Holmes only practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, but was able to shake that tag and log a full practice Thursday. As evidenced by this news, all signs point to Holmes suiting up in Week 10. The 30-year-old hasn't made a big impact on offense thus far, so it's possible he'll still be limited to a depth role in the passing game to go along with special-teams work.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Limited with neck issue

Holmes was limited during Wednesday's practice session due to a neck injury.

Holmes hasn't totaled more than 45 receiving yards in any game this season, nor has he found his way into the end zone. While he'll probably shake off the next issue to play Week 10 against the Jets, he'll be limited to a depth role in the passing game to go along with special-teams work.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Bottled up in blowout loss

Holmes caught his lone target for a 6-yard gain during Sunday's 41-9 loss to Chicago.

Holmes has now been held to one or no catches in four of five games. Sunday was another day of folly for Buffalo's passing offense with another three interceptions from Nathan Peterman. Maybe we'll see the return of Derek Anderson (concussion) against the Jets Sunday, but given New York's top-five defense in terms of opponent passer rating, that probably won't matter for Buffalo's targets like Holmes.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Picks up 45 yards in loss

Holmes caught two of three targets for 45 yards during Monday's 25-6 loss to the Patriots.

Despite the modest production, Monday was actually Holmes' best game of the season. The lanky veteran has been solid downfield, with four of his 10 receptions this season going for at least 20 yards (including two on Monday), but ineffective quarterback play has limited Buffalo's offense. With Nathan Peterman -- who has been intercepted on over 11 percent of his career pass attempts -- looking like the potential starter Sunday against a tough Chicago pass defense, don't expect much out of Holmes.

  • Bills' Andre Holmes: Targeted twice in blowout loss

Holmes caught one of two targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 37-5 loss to the Colts.

Holmes has not caught multiple passes in a game since Week 4 and is still waiting to top 30 yards in a game or find the end zone. The Patriots' bottom-10 pass defense looks to be a potential cure Sunday, but believing that would require you to look beyond Buffalo's carousel of horrors at quarterback. Derek Anderson, who turned the ball over four times against Indianapolis in his Bills debut, is penciled in to start once again.
