The Washington Redskins did what they had to do Sunday, and now they’re in the thick of the NFC playoff race after holding off the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Redskins (9-6) turned two turnovers by Eagles quarterback Nick Foles -- one a fumble forced by linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and the other an interception by linebacker London Fletcher -- into 10 points.

“We don’t get those turnovers, we probably don’t win the game,’’ Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said.

The Eagles (4-11) still had a chance to tie it at the end, but Foles threw short when he had wide receiver Jeremy Maclin open in the end zone, and then he was flagged for intentional grounding on what proved to be the last play of the game, when the Eagles had the ball on the Redskins’ 5-yard line.

“Initially, I didn’t think anything was open, so I was just trying to make a play,’’ Foles said. “I just have to be smarter and make sure it gets past the line of scrimmage. It’s on me.”

Finally, it was probably the last home game for Eagles coach Andy Reid. He is expected to be fired when the season ends next week.

When the game turned: The Redskins led by just 20-13 in the third quarter and the Eagles, who had already converted two fourth-down situations, went for it again on fourth-and-2 from the Washington 47. But QB Nick Foles was sacked by LB Lorenzo Alexander and the Redskins took over and moved in for a quick TD on a pass from QB Robert Griffin III to wide receiver Santana Moss. The Eagles came back to make it a game at the end, but that sequence -- the fourth-down stop and the catch by Moss -- ended up being the difference in the game.

Highlight moments: The 15-yard pass from Eagles QB Nick Foles to TE Brent Celek on fourth-and-1 from the Eagles’ 46, which set up their first TD. … The 27-yard TD pass from Foles to WR Jeremy Maclin, who beat CB D.J. Johnson to the corner of the end zone to give Eagles a 7-0 lead. … The sack and forced fumble by Redskins DE Ryan Kerrigan, which stopped a promising Eagles drive and led to a Redskins’ FG. … Interception by Redskins LBLondon Fletcher, which set up Redskins’ first TD. … The diving catch by Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin in the third quarter, good for 38 yards. … The toe-tapping, 22-yard TD catch by Redskins WR Santana Moss, which made it 27-13 in the third quarter.

Top-shelf performances:

  • Redskins RB Alfred Morris rushed for 91 yards on 22 carries and scored a TD.

  • Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin caught eight passes for 116 yards and a TD.

  • Redskins LB London Fletcher had 12 tackles and an interception.

  • Redskins QB Robert Griffin III threw for two TDs and finished with QB rating of 102.4 after completing 16 of 24 for 198 yards.

What they said about the final play, a penalty on Eagles QB Nick Foles that ended the game:

  • Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin: “We had a chance to pull it out at the end and fell short, and that’s very, very frustrating.”

  • Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall: “It was a relief that it was over.”

  • Eagles TE Brent Celek: “You can’t ask for anything more than that, to be in a position to win the game at the end. We just fell short.”

  • RG3: “I thought they were going to go down there and score and try for two [-point conversion] and not play for overtime. So it was the best-case scenario for our defense to step up big and make a stop.”

Numbers you should know: Redskins MLB London Fletcher played in his 239th straight game, the longest current streak in the league. … Redskins kicker Kai Forbath made his his first two FG attempts, from 45 and 42 yards, and set an NFL record by making the first 17 FG attempts of his career. … Coming into the game, the Eagles hadn’t intercepted a pass in nine games and enemy quarterbacks had thrown 247 passes without getting picked off. The last one came on the first play of the second quarter of a 26-23 overtime loss to Detroit on Oct. 14 when CB Nnamdi Asomugha intercepted a pass thrown by QB Matt Stafford intended for WR Calvin Johnson. … Redskins RB Alfred Morris scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter for his 10th TD of the season, which tied the team rookie record set by Hall-of-Famer Charley Taylor in 1964.

Injury update: Redskins -- D DeJon Gomes left in the third quarter with a left knee injury and did not return. … RT Tyler Polumbus was deactivated with a head injury. Maurice Hurt started in his place. … Eagles -- DT Fletcher Cox suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter and did not return. … QB Nick Foles bruised his right (passing) hand but was able to play through it. … FB Stanley Havili (hamstring) did not play.

Going forward: Redskins -- They finish up next week at home against the Dallas Cowboys in the biggest game the Redskins have played in a while. If the Cowboys win, they will clinch the NFC East title and beat their arch-rival in the process. … Eagles -- They head up the Jersey Turnpike to play the New York Giants in what is almost certain to be the last game of the Andy Reid era. And Reid would love to end his reign with the Eagles by knocking one of his biggest rivals out of the playoff race.
