Hanigan slashed .267/.324/.347 over 33 games with the Rockies last season but had yet to catch on with a big-league club in 2018. Indians' Ryan Hanigan: Lands minors deal with Cleveland
Hanigan agreed Monday with the Indians on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Both of the Indians' top two catchers from 2017 (Roberto Perez and Yan Gomes) have multiple years left on their contract and top prospect Francisco Mejia could be ready for duty behind the plate at some point this season, so it's difficult to envision Hanigan parlaying his minor-league deal into an extended stint with the big club in 2018, barring an injury to one of the aforementioned players. The 37-year-old Hanigan is well regarded for his receiving skills, but wouldn't bring much offensive upside to the table if he ends up landing regular plate appearances with the Indians. He slashed .267/.324/.347 across 112 plate appearances with Colorado last season, which equated to a meager 59 wRC+.

Rockies' Ryan Hanigan: Playing time limited following return from DL
Hanigan logged just five regular-season at-bats after returning from the disabled list in early September.
That being said, the veteran did notch three hits in those five at-bats, but the presence of Jonathan Lucroy really hurt Hanigan's value. His .267 batting average on the season was his best mark in that category since 2012 when he was still with the Reds, but he seems likely to remain a backup no matter where he lands this winter.

Rockies' Ryan Hanigan: Activated from DL
Hanigan (groin) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Thursday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Hanigan is back with the big club after a brief stay on the shelf with a groin strain. The 37-year-old has appeared in just 29 games for the Rockies this season, compiling a .250/.311/.333 line with two homers. He'll return to his role as a reserve catcher for the Rockies down the stretch.

The backstop has been playing semi-regularly since being recalled to the majors June 30, but this was his first multi-hit showing. In fact, Hanigan went just 3-for-20 through his previous six starts. Still, calling Coors Field home is a nice fantasy bonus, so Hanigan has some appeal in cavernous setups.

Given that Tony Wolters is the primary catcher for Colorado, most people didn't bat an eye when Hanigan was left out of the lineup Friday, but it seems that an injury is lingering enough to keep him on the bench. Despite the absence, neither the veteran backstop nor the team thinks the setback is serious, so it's unlikely that he'll spend any time on the disabled list, especially with the All-Star break coming up. Consider him day-to-day for the time being, with Wolters continuing to shoulder a bigger workload in the meantime.
