Miguel Montero: Ends career to become agent
Montero called himself "pretty much retired" Saturday as he transitioned from a career as a player to one as an agent, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Montero launched an agency with his brother-in-law which represents 17 clients, including one big leaguer, Gorkys Hernandez. Montero played in just four games for the Nationals in 2018, which appear now to have been the final four games in his 13-year career. The catcher will end his career with a .256/.340/.411 line, finishing with 973 hits and 126 home runs. He won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016 and made the All-Star Game in 2011 and 2014, both with the Diamondbacks.

Miguel Montero: Cut loose by Washington
Montero cleared waivers and was released by the Nationals on Friday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
The Nationals opted to go with Matt Wieters and Pedro Severino behind the dish in the majors, leaving Montero without a spot on the roster. As such, he'll now test the open market, though his mediocre showing over the past two seasons will likely limit him to a minor-league deal.

Nationals' Miguel Montero: Designated for assignment
Montero was designated for assignment by Washington on Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
With Matt Wieters (oblique) activated from the 10-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's game, the Nationals decided against keeping three catchers on the active roster and removed Montero from the 40-man. He had appeared in four games this season but failed to collect a hit in 11 at-bats. Montero will now be subjected to waivers.

As expected, the veteran backstop will make his return to the Nationals ahead of Tuesday's game with the Braves. His stay atop the depth chart will likely be brief, however, as Matt Wieters (oblique) is expected to return Wednesday. In a corresponding move, Jhonatan Solano (elbow) was placed on the disabled list.

He could miss up to three games while attending the birth of his child. Jhonatan Solano was promoted from Triple-A to provide short-term catching depth. Pedro Severino will start at catcher Saturday and should see the bulk of the work while Montero is away from the team.

Montero has a longer track record of offensive success in the big leagues, but the 34-year-old has seen his numbers tail off in recent years and is a liability on defense, particularly when it comes to throwing out basestealers. As a result, there's a good chance a timeshare will remain in place between Montero and Severino until Wieters is back in the fold.

Nationals' Miguel Montero: Officially added to major-league roster
Montero was officially added to the Nationals' major-league roster Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.
Montero had been informed Saturday that he'd made the team as a backup catcher, but the team hadn't yet cleared a roster spot for him. They did that Tuesday by placing Koda Glover (shoulder) on the 60-day disabled list. Montero was formerly a useful fantasy option, hitting double-digit homers with a batting average of at least .230 in every year from 2011 to 2015. Little of that value remains for the 34-year-old today, as he's recorded a .216 batting average in each of the past two seasons with a total of 14 homers. The light-hitting backup catcher can safely be ignored in most formats.

Nationals' Miguel Montero: Makes Opening Day roster
Montero has been informed that he's made the team as the backup catcher, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports.
Pedro Severino was optioned down Saturday, cementing Montero's spot behind Matt Wieters. The Nationals have yet to formally announced the move to add Montero to the roster. The 34-year-old Montero hasn't done much of note this spring, and even with this news, he's still merely a last-ditch option in two-catcher NL-only leagues.
